I don't know....mine changes sometimes, but here's what I came up with.....
 
You know what originality really means, right? Its when you take someone else's ideas and present them as your own. What you then do is, work it all the way back to its epistemological roots and and what you discover is that originality is borne from the observation of others mistakes.

Hush isn't an 'original idea', either. Yet it was voted number 1.
 
Well actually...there is a theory that goes...

The Buffy crew was working on "Normal Again" when they found out someone had leaked to Charmed their storyline and held back the episode, not letting it air the same week as the one in Charmed.

That of course can be written off as one fan's opinion. However if you do a little detective work. In 2004 they were discussing spoilers at Whedonesque.com.

The only major difference was that the episode which became Normal Again was listed as the eighth episode and OMWF if I remember correctly was listed as the sixth episode

Normal Again wound up being the 17th episode aired March 12th 2002. The Charmed episode Brain Drain aired November 8 2001, four months earlier.

Before I go any further I just want to say Kudos to me, because tracking the above mentioned spoiler down was not easy, but here it is.

The spoiler was for a supposed air date of Nov.20 2001. The Charmed episode Brain Drain came out Nov.8. This spoiler was first posted Thursday, 5 July, 2001. It is absolutely impossible for Mutant enemy to have seen the Charmed episode before they had the idea for Normal Again.

No, some other show did it(not for the entire episode though). That's where Joss got the idea from. I think it was something from the seventies.

Whoever started it, it was done earlier on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. They had Sisko in an asylum as a SF writer, writing the story of DS9 on the walls...sorry, I'm not enough of a ST nerd to give the actual eps, but it was in the '90s, before Buffy or Charmed did it.
 
That one's "Far Beyond the Stars" 1998.

Captain Benjamin Sisko falls into a dream. In the dream, he's back on earth. The year is 1953. He's writer Benny Russel, and former crew members on Deep Space 9 are his co-workers at the magazine where he works, 'Incredible Tales'.

They did something similar recently in Star Gate.

You might even be able to go back as far as 1944's Gaslight where the heroine is convinced she's insanse so the bad guy can look for her grandmother's jewels.

Perhaps it's a natural progression from those "it was all a dream" stories starting with The Wizard of Oz. Or here's a better one - A Christmas Carol. Scrooge insinuates he isn't really seeing a ghost, and that it's just a dream as a result of indigestion.

The only fact I'm pretty sure of is they didn't get the idea from Charmed. The time gap between when they appear to have been working on the story, and when it appeared on Charmed doesn't allow it. It is possible however that Charmed ripped the Idea of Buffy. They had 4 months.
