It's been 25 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer first graced our theater screens. I figured there was a whole subforum for the TV show's anniversary, I thought someone should at least give some love to the great movie that spawned the show. So, this is the thread to give some props to the movie!

I think "clap" is probably my favorite line.

It's crazy when you think about the fact that Buffy predated Clueless by three years. To me they are almost sister movies. Clueless is a Buffy sequel sans vampires.

That's why I think it's funny when people get upset about the thought of rebooting Buffy. It's already been rebooted once!

Lol. Doesn't top SMG's 3 second rendition of how funky is your chicken in the behind the scenes footage of WMY:

Taake: haha aw that was cute, hadn't seen that before

The movie is quite charming and it has its moments...
But I do think it miss the mark on a lot of the humor.

While I love the show for it's humor I just can't get into most of the humor in the movie.
Instead it's just silly and stupid in a bad way for me. I loathe the famous death scene, see Taake's gif, for example.
Feels like they took a "funny" outtake and put it in the movie. I don't get it.

The reverse roles are great fun though. Such as Pike stands behind Buffy at dance when the vampires come.
Overall I also really like the cast. Some impressive names in there. It's fun to see a young Hillary Swank in a role like that.
Kristy Swanson is a great Buffy and Sutherland works as Merrick.

Well I'll admit that the movie now looks much worse than it probably did at the time because of how great (IMO) the show is and just how much SMG has made the Buffy part her own. Even so I think the humour is fairly flat and I don't think there's too much original about the characters. I don't find it scary, funny or engaging on the whole. The casting is pretty lame too, but I guess Swanson does a passible job in the title role:p

I've always loved Paul Reubens and his death scene here is HILARIOUS. (Bonus! The amazingly hot, gorgeous, womb-tingling Rutger Hauer. Had the biggest crush on him when I was younger)

Forgive the crappy quality of this:

My missus had the serious hots for him in Ladyhawke....

Meanwhile - Back on topic ;)
Not seen the movie...and I don't think I can bring myself to watch it. I've read Joss Whedon's comments on what they did to his original screenplay.
Really don't think I would like it (Maybe if I had seen it BEFORE the TV show....but not now)

What they did was improve it! The screenplay is not as good as the movie. It does have a few better scenes but on the whole it seems a lot longer and more drawn out. The movie, in my opinion, was far better than the screenplay.

Seriously? I've heard so many bad things about how it was chopped about.....Didn't Joss refuse to have his name connected with it once he saw the finished article?

Was his screenplay really that bad?

He does that often. Did the same thing with Alien 4 and that script was horrible too.
No, it wasn't that bad, it was just the Kuzuis made it better. In my opinion the Whedon script tried to be more horror and snarky and it didn't really hit. Joss had, if memory serves, people swimming around in pools of blood, vampires forming from said pools and a ton more flashbacks. And the ending was wholly different!

If they filmed his script people would have laughed about it and not in a good way.

I've only seen the movie once and I enjoyed it. I like Kristy Swanson as Buffy. The humor is just a little too goofy and cheesy for my taste. Even though I do like some of the cheese in the first season. Paul Reubens doesn't work for me here. I've not seen Rutger Hauer in anything else so that doesn't appeal to me. I love Donald Sutherland in The Hunger Games movies, but not really a Merrick. I should rewatch the movie. I think someone suggested that I buy it on Blu Ray. Lol

I'd still prefer the camp than some of the crap in Whedon's script. Pike threatening to hit Buffy for disagreeing with him, his making a fist and asking a girl at the prom who was freaking out about vampires if she wanted some punch. There are numerous little examples like that in the script which were omitted for more cheesy and goofy moments.

Ah, see I've not read Joss' original script. But I don't like those examples. Thankfully he got it right with the show. Lol.

I think it was because of his collaborators that really helped the show. To me the Kuzuis didn't do anything some of the writers do on the show. That's why I think alot of the fuss is blown out of proportion.

Mr Trick: Or it could be that Joss actually has talent and maybe you should give him credit sometimes.

Well more often than not when Joss has worked on a script and had free reign he has produced the goods. So I'll take his side on this one. My guess is that in the end here had very little involvement with the Alien 4 script.
