I found that S6 forum lacks a ranking thread so this one is obligatory LOL.
    1. Life Serial (Sorry to the musical episode, but this one is a masterpiece in terms of micro-pacing and comic timing)
    2. Once More, With Feeling
    3. Normal Again
    4. Tabula Rasa
    5. Bargaining 1 and 2
    6. Villains
    7. After Life
    8. Flooded
    9. Grave (Second worst season finale, the worst is Last Gleaming)
    10. Entropy (The long Anya/Scoobies montage is overdone and not funny enough, other parts are OK-ish)
    11. Older and Far Away (At least they caught Dawn stealing, Clem and Tara are great)
    12. Seeing Red (Necessary for season arc)
    13. Two to Go (Dark Willow on the truck is not silly in a campy sense, but an offending one)
    14. Gone (Ew to Xander/Spike confrontation scene)
    15. Doublemeat Palace (The execution has a half-baked feeling from the start to end)
    16. All the Way (Urgh)
    17. As You Were (Urgh)
    18. Hell Bells (Urgh)
    19. Dead Things (Urgh)
    20. Smashed (Urgh)
    21. Wrecked (Urgh)
Urgh Episodes: My main problem with them is not about abusing, nonsensical "real life issues" or bad metaphor, but that they are not like Whedon show episodes. They are straightforward-moving, humorless and more importantly, they have very little characterization moments. This doesn't mean that the Scoobies are OOC. The reactions of the characters are more or less believable, but we can replace the characters with other faces very easily. The execution did not let the events tap out Buffy's Buffy-ness, Willow's Willow-ness, etc.

um, can you elaborate? you say showing us abuse and the darker side of the character is not a problem, the problem is that it isn't shown in a humorous way? or that such things are humorless and shouldn't be shown on a whendon show? i am not clear on your meaning...

and about the characterization - they're not OOC and it can happen but you say it isn't really our beloved characters, but
a cautinary tale about abuse? that seems to be the problem?

The problem is that it's not shown in a humorous way. Such things are not inherently un-entertaining.

Bad Buffy: "When She Was Bad", "Living Conditions", "The Yoko Factor".
Bad Xander: "The Pack", "The Wish", "Becoming".
    Bad Willow: "Doppelgangland", "Something Blue"

Some of these are arguably darker/more realistic than S6, but much more fun/watchable.

It's less like a tale but more like:

"This plot arc needs wrap-up, that plot arc needs filling some gaps, and those three characters' fates need to be addressed. The hell with dialogue/characterization/one-liners, let me finish the damn story!"

    My struggles with ranking episodes...

Should I rank them based on how much I enjoy them and rewatch them?

    On the quality of writing/creativity/execution?

And, some episodes I love how one arc is handled but hate or cringe at other arcs.

There are episodes where I skip over every scene of a particular arc.

I'm still defending All the Way. Its an important Dawn episode, and I like the twists and turns in it. Its not a classic like Halloween, or Fear, Itself but it does the trick pretty solidly.

    1. Villains (Fast-paced, suspenseful shocking ending)
    2. Two to Go (I love these chase episodes)
    3. Once More With Feeling (Need I say why?)
    4. Tabula Rasa (Hilarious)
    5. Grave (Yellow. Crayon.)
    6. Bargaining, Part Two (More exciting, plus we have that awesome tower set piece)
    7. Seeing Red (Except for the attempted rape. RIP Tara.)
    8. Normal Again (Thought-provoking)
    9. Dead Things (Except for the balcony scene, ugh)
    10. Bargaining, Part One (Superb opener)
    11. Older and Far Away (Tara, Clem, and Spike's muscle cramp steal the show)
    12. Life Serial (Nice, solid comedic episode)
    13. Smashed (Rather good for the Willow/Amy bits)
    14. Entropy (Passable for the Spike and Anya conversation)
    15. After Life (Kind of boring)
    16. All the Way (Loved Giles in this one)
    17. Hell's Bells (Funny but also a little ridiculous)
    18. Wrecked (Don't even get me started about Willow)
    19. As You Were (Weak)
    20. Gone (Invisibuffy sucked)
    21. Flooded (Filler)
    22. Doublemeat Palace (LAME)

Really there's nothing to say that hasn't already been said. I didn't like how Buffy had to get a job there, I didn't like her self-loathing alley sex with Spike, and I didn't like the Monster of the Week which came out of an old lady's head.

To counter, I like the metaphor stuff about dark secrets lurking, in this case I think its quite a sharp comment on fast food chains. It made sense to show Buffy trying to earn money, she looked cute in that Uniform:p. I thought how they protrayed the dead end working day was pretty spot on, and I personally enjoyed the return to MOTW. Oh and some hot Buffy/Spike action!:)

Meh, I always thought Buffy looked uncomfortable during that scene.

But yes she did look cute in that uniform.

If I have to say one nice thing about the episode it goes to the joke about how you never see the same workers more than once (or something like that).

    1) Tabula Rasa (Brilliantly funny and also heartbreakingly sad at the end. Aw)
    2) Afterlife (genuinely moving and one of the scariest episodes of the season. Even the Spuffy scenes are excellent)
    3) One More With Feeling (Musicals usually leave me unmoved but the songs here are high quality and the performances pretty stellar. Very clever ep)
    4) Bargaining Part 1 (Such as strong start to the season. Possible the strongest season opener of Buffy)
    5) Two To Go (Pacing, chasing and a hell of an ending. The best of the 'Dark Willow' arc)
    6) Normal Again (meh idea well-executed. SMG's acting is phenomenal. Nice to see Joyce again)
    7) Life Serial (nice idea, some very good comedy, flat finale)
    8) Graves (Half beautifully written, half clunky and flat as hell. Easily the weakest season finale)
    9) Older And Far Away (better with repeat watching. Some Dawn feels and sassy Tara. Plus Clem)
    10) Bargaining Part 2 (Good, but Hellions. urgh)
    11) Doublemeat Palace (I actually like some of this more than is warrented. Atmospheric, funny monster, Buffy's cute hair/outfit. Brought down by depressing Spuffy sex and pacing issues)
    12) Villains (watching this again and its decidedly hit and miss. Still, the stakes are rasied. Rampage!Willow And Spike is in Africa)
    13) As You Were (simple MotW followed by some character progress- at last!)
    14) All The Way (Starts well but the Dawn-plot is dull and uninvolved)
    15) Entropy (Weak comedy, characters being dicks to each other. The ending was good drama though)
    16) Hell's Belles (I should care about this more but Xanya never really grabbed me as a couple. I liked happier-seeming Buffy)
    17) Flooded (Filler and the introduction the Trio. meh)
    18) Smashed (crappy and then sad/obnoxious. not hot)
    19) Seeing Red (Disliked mainly for that scene and what it would come to represent about that storyline. Plus Tara dies)
    20) Gone (Another terribly unfunny episode. The metaphor's better but over all - badness)
    21) Dead Things (Rapists, non-consensual sex, creepy talk. Tara is the only decent thing here. Awful. The worst parts being the balcony scene and the Trio with Katrina)
    22) Wrecked (captures the subtle metaphors of S1 'IRYJ'. Don't do drugs/magic kids. m'kay? Only really saved by Alyson Hannigan's performance. The Spuffy stuff goes from awkward to unpleasent. Worst episode of the series)

I consider the first 7 very good Buffy-standard episodes. The last five are terrible. The rest are decent enough by Season 6 standards.

This is exactly part of the reason why I don't like it. I have the feeling of "Finally a Dawn episode! And you show me this?"

    top ten, no order:
    1. seeing red. tragic ending, disturbing moments prior to that, i find this episode brave and unsettling, and narratively honest. i hate what spike did (before i continue, let me state emphatically that i find rape disgusting and infuriating; i abhor it's use in fiction unless it is in legitimate service of the story and characters, but it better be portrayed as the horrible, ugly thing that it is), but he would do what he did. it's true to his character at the time.
    2. tabula rasa. this is top ten for "randy" alone.
    3. once more with feeling. brilliant, organic episode.
    4. afterlife. one of the most legitimately scary episodes of the whole series. anya? yikes.
    5. normal again. absolutely brilliant. raises a question that none of us want answered: is all of this in buffy's head?
    6. hell's bells. damn you, xander!
    7. flooded. the cold opening, where buffy tries to fix the pipe, is one of the shows funniest moments.
    8. grave. i love grave. great moments between buffy and giles, even if they stupidly left immobilized willow alone with anya. i love that it comes down to willow and xander, as it should.
    9. as you were. this episode seals my newfound affection for riley. his conversation with buffy at the end, which helps her rally to end things with spike, is just beautiful. when he tells her that none of that stuff--the current mess of her life--can touch who she is, man, i was just like bravo, riley, bravo.
    10. villains. again, very disturbing at the end, but you know what? of course willow would do that. you reap what you sew, warren, you misogynist jerk.

Bumping this 'cause I've been binge-watching Season Six.

    1. Once More, With Feeling
    2. Life Serial (The scene in the Magic Box and the scene with the kitten poker are some of my favorite moments of the season)
    3. Tabula Rasa
    4. Villains
    5. Two to Go/Grave (yes, all the Dark Willow episodes rank high for me, surprise surprise!)
    6. Normal Again (I love a good mind-screw episode!)
    7. After Life
    8. Bargaining 1 & 2
    9. Older and Far Away
    10. Smashed
    11. Entropy
    12. Flooded
    13. Hell's Bells
    14. Doublemeat Palace
    15. Gone
    16. All The Way
    17. As You Were
    18. Seeing Red (I know, it's probably controversial to put this so low, especially seeing how the end of it led to all the Dark Willow stuff, but the one scene bothers me so much it ruins the episode for me.)
    19. Wrecked
    20. Dead Things (Ew. Just... ew. This episode really bothers me. Poor Katrina!)

Fuffy Baith: I also love Life Serial!

When I watch season 6 as a whole I like it a lot more than if I were to watch episodes by themselves. I haven't seen some of them in a while so everything below the top 10 is subject to change.
    1. Once More, With Feeling
    2. Life Serial (I just find it to be so funny)
    3. Tabula Rasa (another good comedy episode)
    4. Seeing Red
    5. Normal Again (I like the concept)
    6. Entropy (I ship Spike and Anya!)
    7. Grave (I love Xander's speech)
    8. Two to Go
    9. Villains
    10. Gone (I think it's funny)
    11. Bargaining Pt 1
    12. All the Way
    13. Flooded
    14. Doublemeat Palace (It reminds me of a season 1 episode and I like that!)
    15. As You Were (I kinda like it)
    16. Hells Bells (I never cared for Xander and Anya as a couple)
    17. After Life (Don't remember it well enough)
    18. Smashed
    19. Wrecked
    20. Bargaining pt 2 (I don't like this second half with the biker demons)
    21. Older and Far Away (only Tara saves this episode for me. And Halfrek)
    22. Dead Things (Nope!)

I quite like Bargaining part 1 and 2, especially confused Buffy.

Life Serial is an enjoyable episode. It may not reach the heights of "Hush" but it is a fun episode. The trio were funny with their little competition and I think they worked better as comic-relief villains than what they became later in the season. They balanced out the darkness that was taking over season 6.
