Season 8 story arcs vary wildly in quality (even more so than S4 & S6). So the ranking for me is way easier than consistent-in-quality seasons. Here is my current ranking after two reads, plus some short comments:
    1. Anywhere But Here (melancholic, also with strong "Restless" feeling)
    2. Wolves at the Gate (spirit of the typical Buffy)
    3. Time of Your Life (great atmosphere, better than "Fray" itself actually, also the cover really rules)
    4. The Long Way Home (Joss-style opening: slow build-up but everyone in-character and funny enough)
    5. No Future For You (great build-up ending in a too predictable way, sadly)
    6. The Chain
    7. Willow: Goddesses and Monsters
    8. Living Doll
    9. After These Messages... We'll Be Right Back!
    10. Turbulence
    11. Last Gleaming
    12. A Beautiful Sunset
    13. Swell
    14. Twilight
    15. Tales of the Vampires: The Thrill
    16. Riley: Commitment through Distance, Virtue through Sin
    17. Safe (Underwhelming and not interesting overall)
    18. Predator and Prey (Andrew becomes better in S10 though)
    19. Retreat (Jane Espenson what are you doing?)
    20. Harmonic Divergence (Jane Espenson what are you doing, again?)

    Some conclusions:
    Dracula automatically adds joy.
Jane Espenson was doublemeat-palacing S8, and she continued doing it for S9.
The only thing more horrible than comics Harmony is Billy in S9.

    Having read this through recently...

    1) No Future For You (flat out the best arc. Dark, compelling, great character turns)
    2) Wolves At The Gate (action packed, funny and tragic by turns. Plus Dracula gold)
    3) The Long Way Home (Strong start to the season)
    4) Anywhere But Here (nice character stuff, some good foreshadowing of the key theme of the season)
    5) The Chain (tragic and moving)
    6) Time Of You Life (Great, epic arc...but ultimately what was the point?)
    7) Living Doll (Dawn's subplot comes to an end, and not before time. Still, she was pretty adorable as a dolly)
    8) A Beautiful Sunset (I liked this. Some character stuff and Buffy faces off with Twilight. Plus Satsu)
    9) Willow: Gods And Mosters: (Mostly average. mildly interesting)
    10) Tales Of The Vampires : The Thrill (average. hazy memory of this to be honest)
    11) After These Messages...We''ll Be Right Back (Nostagic fun- fluff)
    12) Retreat (Giles and Faith... but totally disappointing)
    13) Swell (silly and inconsequencial. Could've done without the Kennedy)
    14) Riley: Commitment Throgh Distance... yadda yadda (meh)
    15) Predators And Prey (death to Andrew forever. this will be a theme for the coming seasons)
    16) Turbulance (oookay)
    17) Retreat (Huh?)
    18) Twilight (starts of wierd...goes downhill into bat-shit crazy. Giles tries to explain but fails)
    19) Last Gleaming (utter shit, character assassination, magic egg/seed, and Spike shows up)
    20) Harmonic Convergence (Harmony is still alive? And popular? Nobody on the show ever liked her! Urgh)

Basically about two-thirds of this season is good/solid but the ending is utter, steaming crap. The last issue just about manages to make out that Season 9 might be daring/interesting.
    It wasn't.
