I think it's rubbish too. They really did the character an injustice.

But Willow's costume is hardly the height of fashion in that picture;)

I conceed that they chose a set wardrobe to reflect a more frumpy, less attractive stereotypically character, but like I said I think it was done because they were telling a story of her character slowly gaining confidence through her relationship with Willow. I certainly don't buy this trash that they were trying to Ugly Betty her;)

Of course they were. That's why the only time she wasnt "ugly bettied" it wasn't even her. They could have made the character more attractive, dress better or done something with her hair to alter the look and feel of the character. To actually show different aspects, and they opted not to.

Mr Trick: I don't think there's anything wrong with that one actually.

@Mr Trick "There are certainly a core of us who think that Amber is perfectly attractive " Amber is gorgeous, but we werent talking about her. We were talking about Tara and how they desexualized the character.

Actually she is pretty stocky now - that's one of the things I like about her. She's not typical Hollywood.

The irony here is you want characters that are not incredibly attractive, and then are upset because they downplayed Amber's attractiveness. I think this is pretty much an example of how most people react. I happen to love Tara's look - I like it better than Buffy's.

Now, if I were casting Riff Reagan, I would want her to be Cordelia - that is subverting the trope. There are a fair amount of large women in roles where they are confident, attractive to others, and seen as more than their body shape. Check out some of the regulars on Grey's Anatomy:

One of these is chief of surgery and the other chief of ortho - both have had lovers, and a husband or wife. To me this is the proper use of a woman who is outside the confines of cultural beauty tropes. Having a girl being picked and mocked isn't.

I think the problem with that idea of the Cordy casting is that they need to setup the stereotype in order to subvert it. You have to believe that she would be considered the "IT" girl and then work from there.

i liked the pilot more for its humor. i liked ghe dryness of the principal and how he never gets buffy's name right.... reminded me of andrew when they introduced his character, but i think as buffy was entering a new school, some non common characters coulda kept that gag every now and then. i also thought buffy and xander clicked better in the pilot as friends, and their scene where he talks about the different groups was funny too. i do notice that smg's acting was also toned down to appear more cool vs. bubblegummy. i guess i wish season 1 in general, pilot specifically, had a little more humor.

I do like that Buffy's first day at a new school has that very organic feeling your away around a new space kind of energy to it, that seemed very true to real life to me. I liked the humour in the episode mostly.

I wish they kept the Xander/Buffy scene about the different groups in high school, I thought it was funny.

I guess it was good, but it does smack a bit too much of the Clueless humour the show was trying to avoid;)

So you think they were going for a more laid back approach then?

I'm not sure but just that scene seems at odds with the subversive humour of the show as a whole.

I actually liked the pilot better than WTTH. I liked the scene where Buffy and Xander are talking about the different groups in Sunnydale High, Flutie saying Buffy's name wrong and she corrects him. Is weird watching another Willow though, but I loved the "Freeze! I know how to use this... I think" line. The whole scene with Buffy and Giles in the library is great though.
