Was it Joss's plan to always kill off Doyle early and bring in Wesley? Or did Glenn Quinn's drug addiction get him fired from the show?

The actor was fired. But it's possible that Joss would have killed Doyle anyway, just most likely later on (maybe the end of s1). Doyle was also schedule to come back in s4. Also, Wesley was always going to come in regardless of what happened to Doyle.

(PS. I'm too lazy to find sources for these, so take it for what it is lol)

I thought Doyle was going to be the Big Bad for one season. It certainly would have been better than the dog's breakfast of Season 4.

It was Doyle's addictions that caused him to be fired. Joss had wanted to kill off a major character but it was Doyle's behaviors that caused him to be fired. He overdosed in 2002, at the age of 32.

That's what I've been told recently, at least

Joss & David Fury have given slightly contradictory stories about Glenn Quinn, but the general constants were:

1.) Doyle was never meant to be a permanent character because Doyle/Quinn were too similar to Angel/Boreanaz, making the show difficult to write.

^I never saw that myself. In fact, I thought Boreanaz & Quinn's real life friendship gave the show something special. I've seen Boreanaz in all three of his shows, and a movie or two, and he hasn't had that kind of chemistry with anyone besides Glenn Quinn, Lindsey/Kane aside.

2.) They accelerated Doyle's death because Quinn's drug addiction was disrupting the shooting schedule.

3.) Doyle was intended to be working with/for/over Dark!Cordy, culminating in an Angel/Cordy fight in the finale.

Taake: really? to number 1. I agree with you there.

I'm rewatching Hero right now and I was wondering this very same thing. Doyle was such a great character, that only to have him for 9 eps seems like we are being cheated. i wondered if it was always a plan to transfer the visions to Cordy.... it just seems like it was wrapped up so nice and tidy that its hard to believe that he was just up and fired...

That is pretty much what was said in Joss's biography.

What I was once told was that Glenn Quinn passed away of an overdose, the part about him being fired previously for said drug problem I was not aware of.

Are we talking about the original intent for the fourth season had Charisma not been pregnant where Cordelia had been a possessed 'Big bad' minus Jasmine?

No, surely he had more chemistry with SMG and James Masters for a start?

This is a sad story, but I have to say I didn't know the actor was dead I was certain that he had appeared in a recent season of The Good Wife (5?), but must have been someone who just looked like him and happen to talk with an irish ancient...? Spooky!:(

What biography? David Fury has said on multiple occasions that Doyle was always meant to die, but Glenn's addiction just accelerated that plan to earlier in the season.

Similarly, it was widely reported that Whistler was meant to pickup as Angel's mentor, but Max declined reprising the role due to his busy schedule, so they created Doyle instead. When asked about it, Max said that's 100% false, and he was never approached about coming back as Whistler after his appearance in BtVS.

According to David Fury, anyway. I believe Fury wrote more episodes than anyone for the show.

Geek King of The Universe by Amy Pascale I'm guessing. It does infact back up what others have said.

That way I heard it, Doyle was supposed to serve Cordy who was still fated for basically the same possession just minus Jasmine which ultimately would have ended in his death along with hers (The only way to defeat the evil entity would have been for Angel to kill Cordy).
To my knowledge, there is no official source of any given story, however, so it's possible either or neither of these variations is true.

So to answer the original question, no, Doyle was not intended to be killed off when he was, but they had to fire Glenn Quinn for a drug addiction that he was allowing to become an issue on set and then a month or two later he passed away of an overdose.

He passed away in 2002, he left Angel in 1999 (3 years before)

You aren't counting the subtext between Angel and Lindsey ? :(
