I know there are different Genres and pairings. I see that the vast majority prefer Spuffy instead of Bangel. Some slash fics. Angst. What kind of fics do you like to read about.

I love fics that could fit in the universe that Joss created.

So a pairing between Giles and Buffy or Spike and Xanders... although interesting... I would not read.

I love fics that have a general theme to them. Always trying to fit in the Buffy Universe. Although some AU fics have gotten my attention. In fanfic.com there is a series where Buffy and Angel reverse the roles throughout the 7 season of Buffy. I found the idea fantastic.

I'm also a canon whore, which is why I disagree that a Giles/Buffy or a Xander/Spike pairing can't fit into the show. With the right writer, it can be plausible.

I like fics that focus on the characters more than plot-driven. I like reading wacky stuff like genderbender fics and time travel. Most favorite but isn't very common and popular are unrequited love fics - I've yet to read a Xander/Spike one and I know that if I want something then I better write, but I seriously want someone to write it for me instead. :D Way too many WIPs to add another one.

That fic you just mentioned sounds interesting, can we have the link?

I am generally not that interested in fanfic although Teenage Dirtbag by Sosa Lola has managed to draw me in. It is as well written as any other literature I have read and I look forward to reading each new installment.

I generally read Spuffy fic. I just find Bangel kinda boring. Angel isn't my type, no harm, no foul.

There is so much out there, basically any style and genre so I read whatever I'm in the mood for. I like canon fic, but it doesn't matter to me if it goes off canon either.

What I don't get into are long "out there" fics. I can only suspend disbelief and dwell in the absurd for a certain amount of time, then my attention span runs out. So I only read short fics that really stretch the boundaries...in outer space, body switch, etc. They are fun for an afternoon.

Probably the ones I read most are one's that parallel canon but have a twist to them, or fill in the blanks interestingly.

Some that change one major premise are interesting too. It's a "what if" but not too many "what ifs" for me to be able to follow along. So "what if Spike was a watcher" ok, "what if Spike was a watcher, xander was a wizard and Tara is Buffy's sister instead of Dawn"' too much for me to deal with

I like the characters to basically stay in character. If they get too far away from their basic personalities I usually lose interest.

That being said, there are some all human fics that manage to keep them in character enough that I am transfixed even if the story has nothing to do with canon. The power of good writing!

I like funny short stories. I rarely read porn without plot mostly because it's all the same.

I haven't read any long fics with alternate pairings. Probably because I hang out at Spuffy sites and there is enough good reading there that I don't wander much. I have read short fics of other pairings, some interest me, some not. I'm 2/3 of the way through writing a long fic that ends up Spike/Dawn (buffy was never resurrected) . I might have to write Spike/Ethan just because it sounds like so much devilish fun, and I'm not talking about the sex...my sex scenes tend to be respectfully vague.

One issue I am finding with a lot of WIPs is that they end up wandering too much. Like the writer had a point when they began and then we just end up following the characters nowhere. Even the characters stop growing and it all loses steam. I'd prefer they end it rather than watch it sputter until even the writer doesn't care about it anymore.

My other issue with WIPs is that some writers have too many going at once and there is a ridiculously long time between updates, or they fall in love with one of their other stories and abandon the one they got you hooked on etc. It doesn't feel fair to the readers. I know sometimes real life kicks in and someone has to put a story on hold. But when they have 5 long fics going and are going months between updates then fic #6 starts...I feel cheated.

I'm steering away from a lot of WIPs for completed works because of that.

Most of what I write are long serious fics. What I've posted so far is mostly fluff...which is weird. I have a few interesting concepts I am working on that I will put out into fandom when I get them fleshed out.

I hate abandoned WIPs so much that I won't post any long fics until I have the entire thing at least drafted and through one serious edit. If I am just writing them for myself, then I shouldn't post them if I am writing for others, I shouldn't string them along.

For me,, it's the writing. I do go for some non canon ships, and for Spangel. But a good gen fic is far better than a bad pairing fic. I don't like human AU, though.

Same here. It has never appealed to me at all. In saying that, I do understand why it is enjoyed by others, especially when you have a massive love for a pairing or character and fanfic fills that void post-show. I'd be much more likely to read the comics. Which I plan on doing soon.

Not even a post NFA season with Gwen Raiden as one of the main characters? Once I read this, it seemed obvious they should have done it. This is a long story - told in episodes - an entire season 7.

This is a tiny taste - it rains, they fight, then Angel goes to plan B - takes them all on the roof:

“Hey, Big Guy. Took ya long enough.”

He grinned, unable to help it. “Well, you know how I like to make an entrance, Gwen.”

Before Gwen could open her mouth, Spike pushed between the two of them, glaring at his sire. “I’d suggest that the two of you get a room, but I’m afraid of what the consequences would be. Besides, I think we have a bit more pressing matters here.” His arm swept out, pointing towards the demon horde that filled the street below them. About two dozen creatures glared up at them, brandishing weapons and claws and gnashing teeth. It wouldn’t be long before they were able to force their way into the building and up onto the roof. Even if they couldn’t gain entrance to the hotel, Spike wouldn’t have been surprised if some of them were willing to scale the walls in order to reach them.

Angel grinned smugly. “And that’s just what Gwen is here to help us out with.”

Spike looked back at Angel, and then at the woman. “If you’re Gwen, then I’d suggest you start ‘helping.’ But I’ll be damned if I know what you’re going to be able to do.”

Moving with catlike confidence, Gwen walked to the edge of the roof, and stared at the mob below. She threw Angel a mischievous glance over her shoulder, and mouthed a question. “Now?”

Smiling against the sleety rain, Angel nodded. “Big now!”

Hating the fact that he had no clue what was going on, Spike watched as Gwen reached behind her back and fiddled with something there. A second later, a fiery blue bolt shot out from her other hand, her aim directed at the swarming mass of demons in the alley below.

The sound after that was deafening. Wails and screams of demons in agony—and not the good kind—came from below, while the stench of burning, damned flesh floated up and mixed with the rain, stinging Spike’s nostrils. He tasted them in the air and in the back of his throat and forced himself to stop breathing when he noticed that Angel had done the same.

Spike slipped up to the ledge and peered over as his lips pushed out in a pout. Plan B, although lacking that personal touch he was so fond of, was nothing to sneeze at. “Not bad,” Spike had to admit. “How the hell did you—”

Here's the link - she's a friend on LJ and I don't think she flocks her writing.

I wish it did appeal but it just doesn't. I'm sure the storytelling is great but for characters I've grown to enjoy onscreen it just doesn't feel the same and I just can't relate. I know the shows all originate from writing but not every fanfic writer is going to stay as true to the characters as the show did (for the most part). Some things (like the NFA ending) I like to leave to the imagination (which is probably why I haven't bothered with the comics yet either).

I tend to lean towards the Spuffy stuff, but only if the characters are true to the depictions on screen. I'm not keen on the AU stuff, where Buffy is a detective during the Jack the Ripper murders, for example (I don't know if such a fic exists!). I prefer either a continuation of onscreen stories or alternative viewpoints of existing stories.

I read one that was set in between seasons 5 and 6, which dealt with Buffy's death and what the Scoobies did inbetween seasons, which was great, but I forget the name.

I have tried writing fanfic in the past (long time ago) but I prefer to write my own characters nowadays.

Fanfic is how I got started - back in my ST-TOS days.:)

Amazing how many female SF writers started with TOS - Connie Willis, Jaqueline Lichtenberg, Jean Lorrah, Leslie Fish - it's a good way to get some skills before you move on to your own stuff. But, yeah - fanfic obviously isn't for everyone.

    I go for post- S7 stuff, alt-universe.
Willow or Faith-centric but usually paired with somebody interesting (not Buffy usually because snore). Faith gets paired with loads, from Xander or Tara or Cordy (straightest girl in thew verse right there!) or even Angel its mostly a high quality.
I like smut and plot, Good dialogue is also a plus. I'm not looking for something overly dark or angsty- something that fits the over-all tone of either show is great.

This is what I thought when proposing the IntBufBoaFanFic
    what type of fan-fics,
    what length of fan fics.
So I stated longer than usual fan-fics and left the subject open

Buffy Summers states she doesn't read fan-fics, but did she ever read fan-fics. She once of one of mine she didn't like that I had attempted to create another universe,
of course if there is a good reason not to read current fan-fics that is a good one.
A lot has been written in varying version of what was, I like to read of Buffy's and Willow's adventures in the world out there. Be it an imaginary world or not, oh yes,
    and I hate shipping.

I don't always read fanfic, but when I do I read Fuffy. All fanfics I read are shipping couples. 95% are Faith and Buffy. I've read a few other pairings, but Faith is my favorite character for a reason, and we didn't get enough of her, so I prefer to read more stories about her. Although I don't read the comics, but that's more about the medium of comic books in general, not the stories.
