The time has come for Angel to make good on his promise to resurrect Giles"”but at the same time, Season 9's Big Bads, Pearl and Nash, together with Angel's own mentor, Whistler, gather the final pieces needed to harness the last magical powers on Earth for their own apocalyptic plan.
I've been dying to discuss this issue for a little while -- I've started getting early copies of comics for review, and being unable to talk about it for the last week has been driving me crazy. I wrote a review for it here, but that's no substitute to a real discussion.
After the last arc, I had kind of forgotten that Whistler, Pearl, and Nash had been set up as the Big Bads of the season, but then I remembered that I actually liked them and their place in the story -- everyone seems to be trying to bring the magic back, but now we're seeing the bad guy side of that.
Also, I'm glad that they seem to have somewhat explained what magic being gone means -- it's not the best explanation, but it's something and makes most of the recent magic use make some kind of sense.
And ARGH at the cliffhanger -- the fan in me just really wants to see what is happening at the end there. Did it work? Did it not? They're setting it up so both of them could happen, and given the arc name, I have an idea as to what might have happened, but that's really just speculation on my part. My guess is that it succeeds to some extent, though who knows, and that could go in many directions. From the sound of things, we'll know by the next issue whether or not it does.
Overall, this really revived my excitement, especially since things are coming to a finale soon. Of course, now we have another month's wait for the next issue when we might actually get some answers as to what happened here...
