If Angel spend a century brooding after the gypsy curse gave him a soul, when did he party in Vegas with the Rat Pack and Elvis? Doesn't much sound like the behavior of someone consumed by guilt. I know he pretended to be his old self during the Boxer Rebellion so he could rejoin the Fangled Four (and save humans), but this would have been much later, right? Thanks for clarifying!

Well there were levels of 'brooding'. He arrived in America in the 1900s stinking and covered in filth as he'd hidden with the animals on his crossing, to stay away from the humans. But by the 1920s he was spruced up and looking dapper - but still very surly. He spent the depression in Missoula Montana. In the 40s he got strongarmed into war effort - and he was living in an apartment then. In the early 50s he was at the Hyperion (that ended badly) he was keeping to himself but he more or less was living like a human. The Ratpack/ Elvis' wedding years would have come after that. He had a couple of drinks with the Ratpack and crashed Elvis' wedding (he was drunk and surly and they thought he was in the band) so it doesn't sound like he was exactly Mr, Personality at the time. He just happened to be spending that part of his eternal life in Vegas - so he met some of the Vegas personalities of the time.
This must have been his second time in Vegas, because he knew Bugsy Siegal - and he died in 1947.
In the 1970s he is frequently attending Barry Manilow concerts.
It's only after he feeds off the clerk at the doughnut shop, after the armed robbery gone wrong, that he starts living in alleys and feeding on rats. Up until that point he was just hanging out, feeling guilty - and occasionally meeting famous people. As late as the early 50s he was even still drinking human blood (though bottled not fresh). He isn't pretending to be evil throughout the twentieth century - and he is brooding, it's just he doesn't spend a 100 years the way Whistler finds him.

I think Angel still his vampiric urges and the soul makes him feel guilty and prevents him from acting on those urges even though he can't help having those urges in the first place because of vampire nature. He can't be one thing or the other so he's kind of caught between two worlds. The gypsies wanted to make him suffer and for a vampire, a soul is the ultimate punishment.

I would love to read a Chronicles of Angel or something that gave a really good timeline of Angel's life from even before he was sired.

I've always wondered about this point. Where was Angel getting his blood from? Either he was stealing it from local blood banks, or possibly morgues, or he was feeding on various live animals (assuming, of course, he wasn't finding any willing donors like Riley in Season 5 of "Buffy") It apparently hadn't occurred to him to buy animal blood from butcher shops or slaughter houses until Whistler point it out to him when he was being recruited for the Powers That Be.
