I never realised the actress who played Sam also starred in Casino Royale and Gotham.

I'd love to say all these theories were correct but from reading the actual shooting script where its literally written in that Riley is giving manly handshakes and Buffy is smitten by his looks. That and the DVD commentaries by Petrie where every second sentence is "Riley is just so cool" and you know there was no deeper meaning. It was basically glorified fan fiction

Oh I’ve got no doubt the episode itself is supposed to just be ‘look at what you could have had Buffy! Riley is awesome and gives manly handshakes!’ There’s an interview with Doug Petrie talking about how he fought to get this episode and he wanted to make it Secret Agent v Aliens. I just hate the episode itself so I have to create a new headcannon for myself 😂. I always imagine even Marc must have cringed at that shooting script with things like ‘Buffy is looking at Riley like she should never have let him go’ 😂

Doug - Riley’s like James Bond isn’t he?

Audience -No

I much prefer Doug’s Fuffy shipping to his fanboyism of Riley 😂

It wouldn’t surprise me 😂I do wonder with Joss being less involved this season if he watched this episode and cringed at how forced pretty much every single scene is

‘stop trying to make Riley happen. It’s not going to happen’

That's doubtful, Joss loved Riley, he even said Fans rejected Riley because they preferred Buffy being miserable and unhappy.
He was so disappointed on the Hush Dvd commentary when he couldn't write there first sex scene.
Nothing got on screen without Joss reading the script first and giving it the OK.
He even inserted stuff such as the Balcony sex scene in Dead Things for example that wasn't in the initial script.

I'm sure everything that Petrie put in got the Joss seal of approval
