Meet the Newbie: Introducing one of our latest Potentials

This is the portion of the newsletter where we introduce you to one of our potentials. This month the name of said potential is a bit of a give-away ;) but I'm sure you'll be delighted to get better familiarized with new member and Bangel fan; AlwaysBangel.

Always Bangel said:
1.Hey there Always Bangel! How did you find BB? And what were your first thoughts about it?
I'd never been to a Buffy forum before, but I've been re-watching the series and started browsing the internet for other people to talk to about it. I just strayed across it on a Google search.

I liked it right from the start. It was really, really well organized and put together, and a lot of the members seemed really nice and funny. I've enjoyed it thoroughly ever since.
.
2. Where can you usually be found hanging out? (e.g which forum/s do you frequent most?)
Most of the time I browse through the new posts section, but having just found out there is a Bangel fan club section, I'm there!

3. Do you have a favourite character from the Buffyverse?
Have to say Buffy. Out of any T.V. series, movie, book, whatever, no one comes close to Buffy for me. I've never identified with a character more, and to me, she's just about perfect. Being honest, I've been totally in love with her since I was 15.

But one of the aspects about the Buffyverse I love so much is that there are so many awesome characters. Angel, Spike, Wes, Cordy. The list goes on for a while.

4. Have you watched both Angel and Buffy and if you have which do you prefer?
I've watched them both (Actually just finishing them both up now), and it's a coin toss between the two. I like watching them together (especially in the early seasons when they mix quite a bit). It's razor close, but I would say I like Buffy better, especially the first three seasons. But Angel at it's best though is just as good as the best of Buffy.

5. Speaking of...If you could change one thing from any episode of BtVS what it would be?
Well, I'm a sucker for any Buffy-Angel moments. At the end of Angel, I would have loved a moment where Angel either calls Buffy and gets an answering machine or we see him with his ring, remembering her. I always think of them being together eventually anyways, but that would have been really nice.

6. So aside from television watching, what's an average day like in the life of ?
Well, I've lived in Vancouver, B.C. all my life, but I'm moving to Santa Barbara at the beginning of August for three months before I start at ASU in Arizona for the fall. I'm super excited!

Other than Buffy, I'm a big reader. I'm really into comic books (I think I have every big Batman story since the 80's), and I usually always have a book and a comic on the go. I'm a big sports fan as well. Hockey, baseball and boxing are favorites (The Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Blue Jays are my teams).

For work I'm a card dealer at a local casino, but I can't wait to be done. I've just been saving for school mostly. I'm generally on graveyard shift.
Thanks a lot for thinking of me. I'm really enjoying it here. :)
Thank you very much for a fabulous interview! :D

Summer time reading;
What are you reading this summer? Do you miss Firefly? Well the two things can now be combined
http://io9.com/ helpfully put together a list of book substitutes for canceled tv-shows. Amongst them our beloved Firefly.

Here's what they had to say;
The book substitute: Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks. We recommend this book, the first novel in the Culture series, a lot "” but it really fits here. Like Firefly, Consider Phlebas is about someone who's on the losing side of a huge space war, in this case the war between the super-advanced Culture and the Idiran Empire. Our hero, Horza, opposes the Culture because he has philosophical disagreements with their utopian aims. And he winds up joining forces with a band of pirates and mercenaries on the good ship Clean Air Turbulence. This is the best methedone for Firefly withdrawal.

Brainteaser Answer:

The answer to the challenge is B, the the line on Anya's neck and the page on the magazine behind her are what's different. If you got the right answer, awesome! I saw that a few of you did in the feedback thread, good work guys! Or should I say good eyes :)

Other random news;

Welcome baby Keeva! A first sneak peak on the hand of Alyson Hannigan's latest baby girl! :)

What's my line?
Buffy could have gone into law enforcement but what does Charlotte Grace, first baby girl of Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar think her mommy does? Read on

As the star of Ringer, Sarah Michelle Gellar"˜s workday often involves long hours on the set, but don't bother explaining that to her daughter Charlotte Grace, who thinks mom's career is far more glamorous.
"She totally knows what my job is. My job is to get my hair and makeup done," the actress tells PEOPLE of her 2-year-old, who frequently visits her while she films the show.
"[She thinks my job is] to go in the hair and makeup trailer."

JOSSVERSE QUOTE
I think it's a mistake if people just fall in love and think that that's the only thing you need to keep you happy. There's a lot more to being with someone than just love. - Sarah Michelle Gellar
I want to make films and write films, which will happen, I'm just taking a different route right now. I'm a bit of a chameleon with the whole entertainment industry so to speak. "“ David Boreanaz

Quote of the Month
There must be hundreds upon thousands of posts made every month (maybe even every day) here on BB discussing anything you could care to imagine, and more! Each month, some posts jump out amongst the others, for being particularly well written or thought provoking, and here are our picks from the last couple of months:

Jodast in "If Buffy had to kill Willow..."
https://www.buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?p=1059211

She would have done it. She showed at the end of season 2 she can kill those she loves when the fate of the world is at stake (pardon the pun). Like others have said, the fallout from it would have been a much better season arc than what they went with. I think we would have seen Buffy withdraw into herself and close off emotionally and become a lot more like Cleveland Buffy from 'The Wish' and season 7 would have been about the fight for Buffy's humanity.
Gum Gnome33 in "After season 4, did Anya get dumber?"
https://www.buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?t=59278

Yes I definitely agree with you, VaderSpike24. I actually chalk it up to the phenomenon of characters changing noticeably after they are fleshed out more by the writers and it's decided exactly who they will be, based on where the story is going.
I can think of a lot of examples of this in other tv shows, and I'd actually say that Btvs and Angel are usually not guilty of it, with Anya as the exception. I'm trying to think of examples but am sort of drawing a blank. I think maybe Joey from "Friends" is a good one. In earlier seasons he isn't so helplessly clueless--just sort of a player with a heart of gold who just doesn't happen to be the brightest bulb. By later seasons he is basically painted as a 4 year old.

I think, in addition to all of this, the fact that Anya was originally supposed to be sort of a "monster of the week" but ended up joining the scooby gang sort of facilitated the change, based on the direction the writers were going. They decided they needed a character in the group to take on that "clueless to humanity" for a laugh role--we had it with Spike but he was desperately trying to figure it out while Anya happily resisted it which lead to some humorous moments.

"Triangle" is a great example of this contrast: throughout the episode we have Spike trying to get on Buffy's good side after he realizes that she might be upset at him for outing Riley. But what do human beings like and expect from others? Not feeding off a disaster victim, to him, is a huge deal but of course Buffy is less than impressed. "What's it take?" he asks. Then we have Anya: "Giles! She's pretending to me be! Make her stop." "I couldn't know if I couldn't drive until I tried, could I?" "Oh! I know that this is! It's peer pressure! Soon you'll make me have drugs..." "She's referencing literature I couldn't possibly know," etc. She's shamelessly separated herself from human culture and humanistic interactions and instead of trying to blend herself in or question why she is such an outsider, she gets upset and offended by the fact that they don't understand her. I think that, for whatever reason, the writers decided that they needed this contrast among the two demons who had worked their way into the scobby gang--in effect it created sort of a neat balance. On one hand we had the demon who was accepted by the others more readily because she was human by composition, but who resisted the idea of humanity until the very end of the series. On the other hand we had the demon who was rejected by most members of the group because he was not human by composition but was desperately trying to be accepted and attempting to change himself despite his composition, eventually resulting in him going to get his soul.

Sorry for that ramble but to sum it up: Anya acts differently because in later seasons the writers needed her to. ;)
