The modern comics incarnation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has opened up an entire multiverse of possibilities for the classic characters, introducing unique takes on classic concepts and realities where events and characters were tweaked ever so slightly. While this has largely been done so far to introduce heroic alternate Scooby Gangs, the latest reality introduced instead teased one of the most tragic possible outcomes of any Buffy story: the death of Buffy at the hands of her corrupted Watcher Giles, with a brief story showcasing how that could happen -- and how it would only get worse from there.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tea Time seemingly takes place in one of the many realities that have been teased out of the recent events in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as opposed to the core reality of the series. In this world, the Scoobies work alongside Giles to protect Sunnydale from the vampiric forces of their world. While researching potential blood alter connected to the vampires of their world (that if properly used could keep the sun from ever rising again and allow vampires to gain dominance of the entire planet), the trio end up talking about the possible fallout of Giles becoming a vampire. But while Willow and Xander imagine scenarios where the Scoobies reluctantly but successfully stop the corrupted Giles, Buffy imagines a far more grim storyline.
Buffy imagines a situation where she had to face off with her mentor figure but can't bring herself to slay the man she's come to see as a father figure, When she ultimately embraces him in a hug, she leaves herself open to be killed and sired by this villainous Giles. In this scenario, Giles is able to take Buffy's body into a crypt and away from the sun -- allowing her to be reborn as a vampire as well. Openly referring to each other as their new family, this vampiric Giles and Buffy soon bring chaos to the entirety of Sunnydale -- quickly overwhelming Sunnydale, bringing death and destruction wherever they go.
Xander and Willow are left to defend themselves but are last seen being quickly surrounded by a vampiric horde -- with their fates ultimately left unresolved in this scenario, but with likely little hope of surviving. Meanwhile, the vampires soon kill their way through the whole town -- and enact a spell to cause an eternal night, illuminated by the moon, with a vampiric Buffy and Giles celebrating the dark future together. Buffy imagines a genuinely haunting story. Although she thinks it's all in her head, the final pages suggest that the Giles of this timeline is indeed a vampire, drinking crimson red liquid from his teapot.
It's a surprisingly dark tale, with the ultimate breaking point that leads to such a dark world being Buffy's undying loyalty and love for Giles. Her Watcher has always been a crucial part of Buffy's story, with the original versions of the characters developing such a close bond that Giles was even removed from his Watcher post in Season 3 because his love for Buffy kept him from making objective decisions.
Buffy's imagination takes that to the worst possible conclusion, suggesting at least the idea of a timeline where Buffy and Giles became an even more demented vampiric family than Angelus, Drusilla, Darla, and Spike. The fact that it all stems from a love that's present in most versions of Buffy from across the mutliverse just makes it all the sadder and frightening, as this potentially vampiric Giles could find himself with a powerful ally if he were to ever openly turn against Buffy and set off this chain of events.
