Home is Tim Minear's last episode on Angel, but it's an
excellent one. This episode is 100% brilliant. A
few observations:
- Lilah!!! She looks so beautiful. I love that small moment between her and Wes: "My Wesley made sure I'd be spared, just in case. It's OK, lover. I never felt a thing.".
- Love how Lilah shuts down everyone's self righteousness: "Right, where the slaves are full of giggly joy and love. Ugh, what a nightmare.".
- Connor is still trying to help people after the Jasmine fiasco. I get why he looses it on the cop. He had a family he didn't remember and Connor had no family at all.
- Love that moment of friendship between Gunn and Wes, especially the part about decapitating a loved one (figure of speech

).
- "You want to get into that limo when it gets here? That's up to you. It's not a decision I can make for you, for any of you, but know this: Before the ride's even over, before you even cross through their doors, you'll be corrupted.". Seems like Angel was foreshadowing season 5.
- Lilah's second outfit might be prettier than the first one. I envy her! Loved the shot of Lilah walking with the guides trailing her.
- "Prioritize and personalize."/ "Divide and conquer, you mean." I just love Angel and Lilah together. They always see past each other's bullshit.
- " Come on, Charlie. Let me show you around the chocolate factory." On that note:
- Fred and Knox are okay (in that episode, not as a couple), Gunn in the white room is awesome and Wes has terrible relationships with Watchers (and ex-Watchers).
- It's amazing how Lilah tries to seduce Angel. Her most tempting offers are (in this order): sunlight (necro-tempered glass), saving Sunnydale and finding Connor. He refuses the offer to find Connor, until he realizes his son is in immediate danger, at which point he makes a different deal.
Essentially, Lilah offers Angel what he wants the most (in the right order of how much he wants it):
3. Sunlight aka the ring he destroys in In the Dark. This means
humanity.
2.
Buffy, whom he destroys the chance to be with in IWRY by choosing to save her (and other people)
over his humanity.
1.
Connor.
Angel has already refused the offer to walk in the sun and to be human with Buffy in season 1. And he isn't taking an offer to be with Connor, something he could have done easily when altering the timeline. Angel chooses to give his son a normal life, removing himself from the picture in the process. This was the only reasonable solution. Connor would always be in danger if he lived with Angel and he would always be lacking in his human experiences.
Angel and Connor's relationship ends the same way Angel and Buffy's did. It's tragic, but the outcome of Angel truly loving someone is always the same. There's an obvious parallel between Home/IWRY and Connor/Buffy. In IWRY, Angel gives up the chance to be human in order to save Buffy, and, in Home, he gives up the chance to be a father (something equally human) in order to save Connor. The only person who surpasses Angel's love for Buffy is Connor and both relationships are life-changing for Angel, equally intense and end the same way.
- Can't forget Lilah paraphrasing Angel's speech in 'Deep Down': "Nothing in this world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh, and it's cruel, but that's why there's you, Angel. You live as if the world were as it should be. With all this, you can make it that way. People don't need an unyielding champion. They need a man who knows the value of compromise and how to beat the system from inside the belly of the beast.". It all comes full circle.
- Wesley and Lilah are just so...ugh...the shipper feels. Loved them. Their last moment was so beautiful, excellently written and acted. Completely true to the characters and relationships. I have nothing to say. Just...
Lilah: You broke in here for my contract?
Wesley: I'm here to release you from it. [...]
You've suffered enough. I want you to find some peace.
Lilah: Gallant to the end...but I knew what I signed up for.
Wesley: It's done.
Lilah: Look in the drawer.
Flames wouldn't be eternal if they actually consumed anything. But it means something that you tried.
- Connor and Angel break my heart. Their tears make me cry. Again, I'm just going to quote the characters. It's so well written and acted:
Connor: You
tried to love me. At least I think you did.
Angel: I still do.
Connor:
But not enough to hang on, dad. You let him take me. You let him get me.
[...]
Angel: 'Cause I want to give you everything. I want to take back the mistakes, help you start over.
Connor: We can't start over.
Angel: We can. I mean, we can change things.
Connor:
There's only one thing that ever changes anything and that's death. Everything else is just a lie. You can't be saved by a lie. You can't be saved at all.
Angel: I really do love you, Connor.
Connor:
So what are you gonna do about it?
Angel:
Prove it.
- I love Angel and Lilah's last moment: Angel's "Thank you" and the glance they share is intimate, and says that they understand and respect each other. Lilah is still evil but she isn't the same person who tried to take Angel's son. I'm sad again...Goodbye Lilah...
- Seeing a well-adjusted Connor with his family is bittersweet. It's a beautiful moment and I'm proud of Angel for doing what he did, and seeing Angel's smile is also nice, but I mostly just feel sadden by his sacrifice. Knowing that his son was only ever happy with another family is cruel.
