I'm still confused why they needed to make actual puppets for that, unless the story is told with photos?

The Spike puppet in that photo is not an actual puppet. It's photoshopped.

Thanks though I'm sure I've seen a picture of JM and JL with a Spike and Dru puppet somewhere, unless that was just a fan made thing which would make sense. Some people are so talented.

They did make a Spike puppet, I think it was just a limited edition merchandise type of thing.

Yes it was very limited. I remember seeing it in a shop once, when first released, and even then it was about £90. I think you could make a lot by selling it now if you managed to get one back then.

What a great episode! I don't remember ever watching this one before. I really thought it was clever and everyone did well interacting with a puppet. The fight with Spike was great. :D

Favorite line of the episode is from Lorne "Is there a geppetto in the house?"

I can see why kids would find Smile Time entertaining, it has Muppets and songs.

Polo, please don't...

Polo, that's a little inappropriate for children to hear...

That smile is creepy

Knok is back...

Nowadays an 8 year old wouldn't be caught dead watching Smile Time... just shows how much times have changed...

Nina is back :)

Harmony is doing pretty well in her new position...:)

Nina likes Angel ;)

Angel is clueless...

Angel, get over it...

Fred, it's mystical...

Lorne's knowledge of pop culture really helps :)

Angel, he's a robot...

Angel, not the best idea...

Why does he have a towel over his head ??? o_O

Angel is a puppet

Fred...

Yes, that's Angel, and he's cute

Angel, you are more distracted than usual...

I agree with Angel, remotes are stupid, all they do is get lost...

Angel is getting annoyed, that's so cute

Angel, you jinxed it...

Angel, it's just Nina...

Nina probably thought that Angel was masturbating or something...

Spike is enjoying this :D

Angel

How is the puppet walking ??? o_O

Gunn is forgetting things...

It's not him, it's the puppets

Polo, maybe we should mess with it in order to stop you...

That's a little graphic...

Nina, it's OK to have a crush :)

Noseless Angel :p

No :(

Poor Angel :(

Gunn, don't

Illyria is on the ship, let that sink in...

Groofus, this is not breaking news...

They are onto something...

Being a puppet kind of sucks... :(

Fred feels awkward about Angel hugging her...

Puppet Angel with a sword, still more badass than Edward Cullen...

Polo, stop making orgasm noises please...

Fred, Wes, please take the spell off of the egg...

This is rather disturbing to watch...

Ding dong Polo is dead :D

Nina feels so bad right now :(

Angel and Nina going to breakfast :D

Fred, something's coming, and it will kill you...

Next time: Fred dies :(

Perhaps it's worth mentioning that Buffy already had Sid the puppet, and so established that puppets can be animated, walk, run, and fight.

Personally, I thought Smile Time was very creative in having demons manifest in this dimension via puppet form (is that like a demented form of Avatar?) as they used the show to prey upon the children watching it.

This episode proves that the most ridiculous idea possible is often the best idea while also dealing with extremely important and often not mentioned plot developments. I laugh at basically every line except for the ones between Wesley and Fred that just make me happy. And of course the tragic event that is Gunn going to Dr. Sparrow and signing away the life of a marvelous woman to keep his head from being metaphorically bald. But more importantly, when Fred calls Angel cute, he says, "You're fired." That just does not get old.

I wonder if the Happytime Murders got their idea from this episode. When I saw the trailer..this episode was the first thing that came to mind.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it, but this is considered one of the best from the majority of the fandom. I'd be interested in hearing why you didn't like it.

The first time I saw this episode I thought it was the stupidest thing I had ever seen. But it grew on me on re-watch, especially when I noticed the self-referential comment about Happy Days, creator of the "jumping the shark" trope. And everyone's obviously having such a good time that now I see it as really fun.

Angel's grumpy, heavy-browed puppet avatar is spot-on for him. I love how the gang can't stop smirking at him, and how "the wee puppet man" defeats Spike because he can't stop laughing long enough. But my favorite thing is Lorne's fount of new nicknames: muppet, pumpkin, my little prince!

Fred and Knox, that declined fast. "We talked about this." And now, Knoxy, we need to talk about sexual harassment in the workplace. I would have liked a few more scenes of build-up between Fred and Wesley, but now that they don't remember Connor, perhaps there's less for Fred to resent about Wes.

Angel doth protest too much about risking a relationship with Nina. Two episodes ago, he was hoping to get back with Cordelia! Nina is much lower stakes.

Who or what was that guy with a towel on his head, sitting in front of the Smile Time life-force reservoir, supposed to be? I feel it's some in-joke that I didn't get, because he didn't seem necessary to the scene. And is David Fury's inclusion supposed to be ironic, because as the writer, he is the "puppetmaster"?

They did a good job making puppets seem sinister, especially with the quasi-molestation noises when they were draining the kids, eugh. This may have permanently ruined Sesame Street for me, but I came to enjoy the whackiness of this episode!
