I think shipping follows what we experience in real life. I went around with another girl before I was married who seemed to be a reasonable choice at the time. Looking back on it now, the only question I have about whether I should have continued with it is, "How do you want my no, fast or slow?" I have no problem with characters changing their minds because I have no problem with people in real life changing their minds. My parents were upset - they liked B----- and my mother hated my wife who came along later but my father understood that I had the right to choose. What was the alarm bell about B----- ? She was an X-ray technician at a local hospital who refused to answer the phone because although she had signed up to be on call, she just let the phone ring until whoever it was hung up. Signing up to a commitment then not honouring it does not bode well for a future together. She never picked up for me either, so I had enough trouble getting in touch with her that I simply stopped.
When viewers recognize that a ship has passed its "best before" date or we see previously unseen problems such as with Riley insisting that Buffy has to need him, I see no problem with shippers moving on any more than I see problems with the characters in the story moving on.
