I think it particularly sums up Spike's feelings for Buffy in Season 5/6. He knows no good can come from how he feels ("I wanna hold you, but my senses tell me to stop") about Buffy (the "poison") yet he just can't help himself ("don't wanna break these chains").

I have a whole playlist dedicated to Spuffy songs, it currently has 86 songs and is arranged kinda in a chonological fashion except from some late additions that I haven't had time to sort in the right place yet. (Link if you wanna check out)

I'd wanna start with Hoziers album "Hozier" where almost half the songs makes me think of Spuffy! Some examples:

I Know it's Over by the Smiths for some Spuffy angst, Spike introspective POV, s6, post break up, when their relationship was less romantic and more confused.

Spike missing Buffy. Reminiscing on death imagery/sensation, comparing it to his recent break up.

I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go

In this moment he's thinking about Buffy not being in love with him, about their break up, feeling unwanted but still he won't leave Sunnydale, because where else would he go? He doesn't want to be alone.

Spike dealing with depressing thoughts after the break up. To me the sea can represent the sea of emotions that threaten to consume him. However, the addition of the knife line implies thoughts of suicide. Since Spike was known to engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms and have intense moods, this is a reflection of his mental state.

Referring to himself. He is the loud loutish lover. He recognizes that in S6 she needs him more than she loves him to feel alive. Buffy is the sad veiled bride who cannot be happy.
Another interpretation is that he's singing this to a future partner of Buffy, both wishing for her to be happy but also saying hey, Buffy might end up viewing you the way she viewed me, as source of comfort.

But in my heart it was so real

He loves her so much and he thought he could make her see it, but it's over. It never really began because Buffy didn't start the relationship with loving him. The romance aspect was real to him but not to her. Of course, i believe that Buffy did love Spike at times in Season 6, but refuted it enough that this line makes sense.

And you even spoke to me, and said :

He's talking to himself. "that's why you're on your own tonight" means he's feeling like he isn't worthy enough.

They have a broken, unnatural relationship in s6, there is no love for them together. This portrays their relationship as tragic and doomed. He's feeling hopeless, as if he and Buffy will never have that love he craves. (but ofc they do).

Spike likening the breakup to dying. And he would know, since he's died before.
