My Top 5 Angel Season 1 Episodes are
1. To Shanshu In LA - Amazing finale. I loved their old offices being blown up, very epic like Graduation Day on BTVS S3.
2. R/M with a Vu - So funny this episode was! Cordelia is really amazing in it. Interesting mystery.
3. Sense & Sensitivity - I'm a huge fan of Kate Lockley and this episode poured heart & emotion into it. Great plot & Kate's character had so many great plot points.
4. Blind Date - Lindsey joining forces with Angel & his members was really an interesting dynamic.
5. I Will Remember You - A heartbreaking but pretty amazing episode.

Honourable mention to : Hero because Doyle's death was one of the saddest moments in the show!

I'm right in the middle of a season 1 rewatch but from my memory, it goes like this :

1. I Will Remember You : near perfect episode, it always makes me feel a lot.
2. Five By Five : this (and Sanctuary) for me is the moment the show understood what it really wanted to do and was able to execute it well.
3. Sanctuary : same as above + I love how I'm able to understand all sides here. I thought the episode was very well written drama and had a clear purpose.
4. To Shanshu In L.A. : amazing season finale who makes the season feel like it had an arc after all, and it shows some great development/growth for the characters.
5. The Ring : I remember enjoying this a lot, it was a nice concept. Oh and Lilah!

I'm not 100% sure about the fifth. I guess I'll confirm soon-ish.

5. War Zone - Gunn's introduction is probably my favorite of the show and the episode in and of itself is just very good, full of fun, sad and meaningful moments.
4. The Ring - I never understand why this doesn't get more love; Wes and Cordy are great, but the best parts are when we see Angel start to figure out that the world he lives in may not be what he thought it was.
3. Five By Five/Sanctuary - Faith. Rain. Breakdown. Nough said.
2. City Of... - One of the best TV pilots out there, imo.
1. Hero - Never fails to make me cry and yell and hate JW for taking Doyle from us so soon :(

1. I Will Remember You: so much happiness, so much sadness, emotional overload just trying to explain why I like it
2. Parting Gifts: While I liked Doyle and was sad to see him go, this episode just established the Angel / Cordelia / Wesley team so well I fell in love immediately
3. Five by Five: A knockout punch by Faith
4. Sanctuary: Brilliantly constructed, though painful
5. To Shanshu in LA: A good season finale that brings everything together and mirrors Prophecy Girl in interesting ways

Season 1 is the most underrated season. Over half the episodes are just pure gold, and the five below are some of the best of the season:

Sanctuary
Five By Five
To Shanshu In LA
City Of....
The Prodigal

Honorable mentions: Rm w/A VU, Somnambulist, Eternity, Blind Date, Hero, In The Dark, IWRY, Parting Gifts.

1. I Will Remember You - Bangel ❤.....enough said.
2. Sanctuary - So much emotion going on here. It's nice to see Angel, Faith and Buffy together again, even if it's not on the best of terms...love that Faith makes the decision to turn herself in.
3. To Shanshu In LA - An awesome season finale, and that smile on Angel's face when he learns about the prophecy makes me smile.
4. Hero - Gosh I loved Doyle. 💔
5. Rm w/a Vu - Love Cordy's new place and her new roomate.

1 5by5 Just incredible from the flashbacks which are an excellent contrast with the present to Wesley disturbing torture to the incredible ending.

2 Prodigal I just love the Flashbacks

3 Sonambulist The first episode to really focus on Angel as a character rather than victim/monster of the week

4 Blind Date I love this so much more now than when I first saw it.

5 War Games such an underrated episode JAR kills it

1. I've got you under my skin - always loved the exorcist and thought the twist in this one was really good
2. I will remember you - such an emotional episode and smg/db show their amazing chemistry together
3. To shanshu in L.A.- really enjoyed this finale. First signs of how these headaches are really killing cordy. Love Angel chopping off lindseys hand
4. Five by five /Sanctuary - never a dull moment when faith is around. Really good 2 parter here and felt this was a huge moment for wesleys character by going against the council.
5. Hero - Doyle's heroic death. Completely threw me first time out as I didn't expect a major character to be killed off so soon

Since both @EffulgentBitca and @vampmogs have done these for Buffy seasons I thought I'd do one for Angel as well :)
Mine:

Five by Five A perfect episode of either show. The flashbacks with newly souled Angel perfectly compare and contrast with Faith. The torture scene despite not actually seeing anything in it, is gruesome while Faith's expression as she drops the bloodied glass is heartbreaking at the same time. The fight scene is some truly fantastic stunt work. Faith biting Angel is a great flip. Wes look when he grabs the knife. Then it all caps off to a perfect ending "I'm bad I'm evil, Angel just kill me, please just kill me" and Wes dropping the knife. Wow just wow.

2) Somnbullist For me the first real episode that kicks Ats into high gear. Making the story about Angel than victim of the week. Both Cordy and Wes both act smart and competent. Finishing of with a beautiful scene between Cordy and Angel. Tim Minear has arrived.

3) Prodigal "She thought I returned to her an Angel" wow. While the understatedness of both Kate and her dad interrogating each other while having a Hotdog together is so unappreciated imo.

4) Sanctuary I'd have it as 2 except for the Watcher Council goons who were just pointless. The Faith/Buffy rooftop scene makes up for it though. The scene of Faith at peace in the jail cell after confessing was a great end to the Faith arc.

5) City of The start of the show and Angel jumping into the wrong car and not saving Tina to Cordys Hey your a Vampire all work so well as a premiere.

1. I Will Remember You : this episode is well made and always makes me feel a lot. It’s definitely one of the most memorable episodes of the show. And SMG breaks my heart.

2. Sanctuary : I think this episode is very interesting and important for AtS’s mission and I really enjoy watching those characters interact together.

3. Five By Five : such a good Faith episode that shows why Angel might be the best person to help Faith.

4. To Shanshu In L.A. : a great season finale. The episode shows how far those 3 characters have come and I like the game changers at the end,

5. Parting Gifts : I love this episode! It feels like another pilot and it’s just really funny and meaningful at the same time.

Honorable mentions : Blind Date, The Ring

This changes all the time but...

1) Five By Five: I think this episode takes a while to get going but when it does it's magnificent. This is Eliza's best performance in the Buffyverse, the torture scenes as horrific but very well-written and directed, the action sequences are outstanding, and the alleyway scene is iconic.
2) Sanctuary: It narrowly missed out on the top spot because Five By Five's ending just nudged it out but I really love this episode. In some ways I find it the stronger episode of the 2-parter and the Buffy/Angel/Wesley/Faith conflict is one of my favourite arguments in the verse because everyone's POV is understandable and legitimate. It's also the episode that really nails down AtS' core mission statement.
3) I Will Remember You: A polarising episode in fandom but one of my absolute favourites. DB and SMG in particular give stellar performances and I'm always captivated by how unbelievably happy Buffy is here because, honestly, it's such a novelty. Sarah plays her so differently and it memorises me.
4) Somnambulist: A superb episode that is genuinely chilling in parts (the opening scene of "Angel's" murder) and the first time AtS utilises Angel's past to it's full potential. Great action, a great MotW in Penn, and I love the callbacks when Kate reads up on Angel ("the demon with a face of an angel")
5) City Off: As far pilots go this one is pretty strong. I really like Tina and was sorry to see her go, Charisma does a wonderful job of making Cordelia vulnerable and sympathetic, I love the flashback sequence to BtVS, and the series established a very different tone straight away with Angel failing to save the girl. But really, it's the opening teaser that I love more than anything. The Batman-esque wrist stakes are iconic and Angel was never cooler.

A fairly BtVS/Crossover-heavy list but I do think they're the strongest episodes of S1.

  1. Hero
  2. To Shanshu in LA
  3. Rm w/a Vu
  4. Five by Five/Sanctuary
  5. War Zone
Now I'm curious. I'd love to know your reasons for Hero and Rm w/a V and WZ as they aren't on the usual lists. Not that they aren't good but I don't normally see them on these lists 😃🤓

  1. Hero - I don't even know how to put it in words and I can't believe it's not at the top of everyone's lists! The culmination of Doyle's journey (that only took 9 episodes!) is so powerful and emotional and well-written and well-acted that it makes me cry every time, despite how many times I've seen it by now. People say that only the last ten minutes are good, but I very much disagree, as the entire thing is a slow-build to the end, from Angel and Doyle's talk, to Cordy and Doyle on the stairs, to Doyle's interactions with the kid-demon, everything has a reason, all of it matters to the story. Just a gorgeous send-off to a great character.
  2. To Shanshu in LA - The second best season finale of the show (after NFA, of course) where we see just how far Angel has come, from that loner, brooding in the dark - that scene with Gunn, it still gives me chills, the way he says that those are his people and he will do anything to protect them, or even get revenge on their behalf. I love his fight scene with Vocah and Cordelia's scenes are the very best. Not a bad cliffhanger, either :)
  3. Rm w/a Vu - From Out of Mind, Out of Sight to... oh, that's right, she doesn't really get a lot of spotlight, does she? Of all of Cordelia's episodes (including the future ones like Birthday and You're Welcome) this is my favorite. This is Cordelia at her very best; still bitchy, but not a bitch anymore. She's strong, she's sassy, and she takes shit from exactly no one. Cannot stress how much I adore this episode.
  4. Five by Five/Sanctuary - I'm clumping them together because there are parts of both that I don't love, but combined it's one really great - really long - episode. In Five by Five, we see Faith's slow deterioration that began in This Year's Girl, which ends with that gorgeous scene in the rain. Then in Sanctuary, we have Faith being very quiet and still struggling with this redemption thing. The best parts of that episode are the scenes with Angel and Faith before Buffy shows up. Eliza does some of her best acting ever in those scenes.
  5. War Zone - I love Gunn's introduction; his entire story - finding out that there is a gang of humans fighting back the tide of evil in LA is really great, seeing his relationship with Alonna and being the leader of the group, the pressure that puts on him. I also love Angel's reaction, how he's realizing that as big of a difference as he makes in the world, not only is he not the only one, but there are people out there who are not impressed by his story. The best parts are the first scene, with that slow pan of Gunn (who you think is Angel at first - "Were you expecting somebody else?") and the final scene, where Angel offers his help to Gunn, instead of the other way around.

Thank you 👍. Can't speak for anyone else but if i had to guess people's issues with Hero are not with what you mentioned (which are fantastic) but the Angel v Nazis subplot complete with a Great Escspe Bike 🤓

Priceless
