I think alot of the wanting more of Darla in season one is simply revisionist history. If Greenwalt did not bring her back in Angel, she would have never appeared again on Buffy, and for the most part all but forgotten. Not many people mention Luke and he was much more important in the first season.
Exactly, becauseare you saying that the importance of her character in Angel or to the Angel character is what makes people think she was wasted in Buffy?
I didn't think she brought anything.. I thought she was rather forgettable. Though she was the smartest vampire, but I just didn't find the character or the actor that appealing at all. She was just an afterthought.what Benz bought to the character.
I would've liked to see the Whirlwind in modern day Sunnydale or in LA. I do agree though that Darla wouldn't have much purpose in season 2 and would actually derail it eg Angelus wouldn't be messing around with Drusilla which takes away Spike's reason to go against him. Spike's assistance is the only reason Buffy won in the finale, if she'd had to take on all three vampires she would be dead.
I agree. Perhaps Darla could have been killed off at a certain point in season two of Buffy after Angelus returns so that Angelus can start messing with Spike by going after Drusilla and then Spike can team up with Buffy and the rest of the season would still play out the same. That way we could have had at least a few episodes of the four of them together. Plus it would have been even more difficult for Buffy to see Angel with his former lover; it could have been part of Angel's torment of her. Take out a few of the bad season two episodes and there could be enough length in the season for this storyline to work. If not this though, the whirlwind in season two of Angel in L.A. would have been fantastic and would have made for an excellent story arc for that season.
In some ways I think Angel would want to try and redeem his former companions especially if Darla had her soul. He'd want to save Dru because she is his victim and if he can redeem her then it would alleviate his guilt over what he did to her.
If they could have avoided Darla being staked in Season 1, instead letting her be the one who let the vampires in Season 2 instead of the Anointed One, who was a totally useless character, anyhow, it would have made more sense. Spike would never have tried to burn her, and pretty much nothing in that scenario would have changed either Angel losing his soul or much, if any of Spike's activities for that Season.
Maybe the finale could have been Angel trying to close the dimensional portal by throwing her in, and gotten dragged in by her for her troubles.
I love love love Darla, but I wouldn't have wanted her in s2 of Buffy (my fav season of the whole Buffyverse). Part of the reason Angelus is so deliciously scary in that season is his sick and twisted obsession with Buffy. If Darla had been around I think it would have demeaned his obsession with Buffy because he would be too busy gettin' busy with Darla. Obviously he could still be obsessed with Buffy like he was with Dru back in the day, but his obsession with Buffy was different than Dru's. Buffy made him feel human, even Angelus loved her on some level which is why he wanted to make her suffer. Darla's presence would have ruined this.
