Hush is a masterpiece. It`s one of the best episode of BTVS ever. But would`ve been better if the scobbies learned American Sign Language?

The episode only spanned a couple of days so I don't think they had time to learn ASL. I also think the sign language they did use was pretty funny and we would have lost that if they were using the real thing

If they learned it in school years prior.

It would have been good if they could have done ASL, in a general sense, but for Hush I don't think it would have added anything to the episode and might have made it less funny. I would imagine if you were deaf and a Buffy fan, it would have been amazing to see characters using sign language, and that would have been quite an inclusive thing to do

Since most of the general audience doesn't know sign language, I think it would be very confusing to have the characters communicating outside of gestures that are obviously basic attempts to communicate what they're talking about. The episode would have to have subtitles to show what the characters are saying if it was proper sign language.

Everyone knows the sign language for "drink" though.

I don't know about American schools, but here we did learn very basic sign language. So "Hello, my name is....." and spelling out your name. Nothing more than that though, so it seems a little unrealistic to expect these characters to learn sign language in such a short space of time.

    Plus this:

is never not funny. I don't think they teach that in sign language.... :D

nightshade: The only sign language I was taught in school was thank you and please, and that was because the teacher used to work with deaf kids. Oh and door I think too

I think the whole point of the episode was to highlight how the lack of being able to speak caused misunderstanding between people. Even problems with mundane things like Riley in the lift. If they could communicate normally using signing it would remove all the humour (my case in point being the Gif above) ;)

Just out of interest if Faith had been around for this episode she could have helped as Eliza knows signing & is extremely proficient at it as she has often done stage performances for the deaf....... :)

Puppet: I never knew that about Eliza, that's an awesome fun fact :)

I don't think it would have been realistic, most schools don't teach it and I don't see any of the scoobies aside from maybe Willow taking any extra curriculars.

Off topic but I've always wanted to learn ASL. Maybe one day I'll take some classes.

No its pretty much a perfect episode anyway and I don't think that would have made it any better.

I know a couple of ASL words, but that's just from watching Switched at Birth. ;)

Obviously, some people who are not hearing impaired can sign. My wife, for instance, learned because she once worked for the Georgia School For The Deaf. It isn't all that common a skill, however, and would have been just too much a coincidence if the Scoobies had all had that skill. Plus, the whole point of the episode was to have everyone rendered speechless. Being in pain or danger and not being able to even call for help is a common nightmare, and it was exploited quite well. "Hush" is, in my opinion, one of the very few real horror episodes of entire series.

I rather thought it was the opposite; how talking too much can cause misunderstandings. But strip away the speech and people are forced to pay MORE attention...

I thought it was how we needlessly complicate our relationships by talking when all we want is a hug and some release.

I don't think there is much at all that could have made Hush any better. It's pretty perfect. And sign language would've destroyed the effect silence had on the city.
