Saint Ignatius High School loomed in front of her. Kids were coming up the sidewalks in all directions and heading inside. She reluctantly moved to join them. As she walked to the door, someone slammed into her from behind, sending her flying. Great. Just the first impression she wanted to make. She tried to get up and dust herself off as nonchalantly as possible, trying to ignore the giggles and stares from those around her. She turned and saw a short girl, dressed in a peasant skirt, sweater and wearing some very flamboyant jewelry. “I’m okay, nothing to see here. Just fine. Don’t worry about me,” the girl said to nobody in particular as she collected her things. Just then, a tall, slightly geeky boy came up to her and offered her a hand up.
“You really need to stop doing that Alex. You’re going to hurt yourself.” The boy picked up one of her books still lying on the ground and handed it to her. |
“Ash, just the guy I was looking for. Can I copy your history notes during first period?”
“Maybe you should try staying awake instead of napping…?” Alex gave him a look, and after a second he fished out his history notebook and handed it to her. She smiled at him, and then seemed to remember that she had knocked Buffy to the ground.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Are you okay? Clumsy me…” |
Buffy didn’t know exactly what to make of the odd pair. “Yeah I think so…thanks.”
“You new here?” Alex asked. Ash stood shyly behind her.
Buffy managed a smile. “First day.” She looked at a piece of paper in her hand. “Can you tell me where the principal’s office is? – I’m supposed to report there first.”
Ash finally managed to speak up. “I have AP bio right next door – I can show you. I’ll see you later Ally.”
Buffy nodded and followed Ash into the school. |
