For those that are not in the UK or did not watch the National TV Awards this evening.

David Tennant again won the award for best dramatic performance. During his speech he announced live that the special episodes in 2009 (as he is off doing Hamlet) will be his last as The Doctor 🙁

Gutted does not cover it 🙁 🙁

Of all the tv that I watch it is my number one and it just will not be the same without the energy he brings to it.

My fellow DT lj fans are in mourning aswell, I sorta knew he was going, and wasn't doing S5, I say best of luck to him, at least he will be around to do diff stuff.

There was talk of several different people a while ago but there always has been since David started given that Christopher Eccleston only stayed one season. There is no 'official' announcement given that David only said it less than an hour ago.

But with David going and RTD going....how much is it really going to change and will it be for the better?
 
i know he jsut announced it, but if you read any interviews with russel etc theyve said for ages now he is leaving after the specials... guess this confirms it... come on we all knew this anyways


shempy was annoyed that chrisptopher left so soon anyways, i really liked him and if he knew he wasnt going to stay he should never have taken it on in the first place, dont cut the characters life down gah!

and why cant we have a rest after david leaves?

The Doctor Who restructuring is kind of bad news/good news.

Davies is leaving, but Steven Moffat who's written the best episodes such Girl in the Fireplace and Blink is taking over.

Tennant's leaving, but think of all the great possibilities for a replacement.
 
So,let's discuss who would be the best fit for the TARDIS starting for 2010....

Aww, it sucks that he's leaving! I just started Doctor Who a little while ago and was pretty far along in the process developing a massive fangirl crush on him, too. Let's hope the next guy is as hot...err, I mean talented...as David!

WHAT!!!???? I hadn't heard that yet!!! and I'm not even finished of the 4th season. aww David was the best Doctor EVER!
 
First of all, I absolutely adore David as the TimeLord.
He is probably my favourite HOWEVER, I have chosen to view this as a good thing.

a) Because David will leave on a massive high
b) Because the entire show is getting an overhaul with new lead writer, new production staff and new (possibly old - my money is on Genny) side kick so Moffat has the ability to start with a new fresh perspective on The Doctor.

I am in no way worried about his leadership of the show as N4H said, Moffat has written some of the best episodes - and he apparently plans to make it darker.

I don't think this was a shock though, I mean does anyone remember a year or so ago when Catherine Tate told Jonathan(when he still was on air) Ross that Tennant planned to leave?

There are some interesting names as possibilities BUT I really do not want James Nesbitt. I am not a fan of his at all.

I know it will be a hard secret to keep, however I would love to believe the identity of the next Doctor is kept from us until next Christmas when Tennants Doc dies.

Ohhh and my FAVOURITE person to be The Doctor - Alan Rickman!

Yeah, I am also no fan of Nesbitt at all. He lacks a lot that every Doctor from the 60s onwards did have. I say, humour, energy, child-friendliness (we mustn't forget that it is still essentially a childrens show) and they all had this quirkiness (But DT is the best example of that I'd say)
Anyway, I would love to see Alan Davies as the Doctor, but I don't know if he could pull that off, acting-wise. Lately I heard the interesting suggestion of Kris Marshall (the odd son out of My Family) It's very weird, I know but he is a good, not too old, funny actor. I'd love Bill Nighy, but I think he's too famous, same for Alan Rickman (unfortunately), Stephen Fry, and Hugh Grant. Richard E. Grant is interesting, but I don't know that much about him. The idea of the Master (John Simm) returning as the Doctor is unsettling, but potentially interesting in the hands of Moffat. I also saw the name of Ben Wishaw in the bookies list. He's cute but I don't know if I'd trust him playing the Doctor.
Anyway, that's a whole list. I just can't imagine the new Doctor being played by someone else. David really made him, if you know what I mean.

I do agree with BotD however, that it's probaby the right thing to do right know. David will be leaving on a huge high and Stephen Moffat, though not RTD, is a great writer. I'm not scared at all for the future of Doctor Who, and we all knew it would happen, it's just always too early when it does.

Oh, that Patterson Joseph guy, is he the african one out of Green wing? (Oh, I know that sounded slightly nastier than it was supposed to sound) He's funny. I don't know if he's the best option but it would be interesting to see what happens if he gets the part ^^
 
Mh, this is in a way quite surprising, and in a way rather unfortunate, however I believe we will see David Tennant in loads of other stuff in the coming years and a new Doctor will always be a nice thing 🙂
 
That was the first news I got after getting the power on in my apartment. It is most distressing and depressing and I don't know if I'll watch anymore. Yes, I am an uncultured American.

Although the idea of Anthony Head being the Doctor makes me happy because I know he's wanted to for a very long time... of course, I'm not a Brit, so, what do I know? (Also, the fact that I've only seen Christopher Eccleston onward... yeah.)

But I suppose it won't be that bad so long as Martha's not there... ^_^
