- Sarah Michelle Gellar originally auditioned for the part of Cordelia Chase and Charisma Carpenter, auditioned for the part of Buffy. Julie Benz also tried for the part of Buffy but eventually landed the role of Darla. Mercedes McNab, auditioned for the part of Buffy as well. So as Selma Blair and Katie Holmes.

- Joss Whedon has said that the idea for Buffy came from all the horror movies he had seen featuring a helpless young blonde who would almost always be the first to die. He felt she needed a better image.

- Up until the third season, the school set had only one hallway and the Bronze was actually just an old warehouse.

- The Master has a name which goes unused on the show but was mentioned in the script: Heinrich Joseph Nest.

- "Mutant Enemy", Joss Whedon's production company, was the name he gave to his first typewriter when he was 15. The logo was created in 20 minutes when he was told he had to have one.

- Joss Whedon has originally planned for viewers to never see Buffy's parents, however he realized this could get complicated and therefore wrote in Buffy's mom Joyce, who would become an important character for the rest of the series.

- The scene where Jesse asks Cordelia to dance is actually from Joss Whedon's school experience. Though in answer to the girl's reaction "With you?" he said nothing and left unlike Jesse.

- Joss Whedon has said that originally he wanted to include Eric Balfour (Jesse) in the opening credits for this episode, to trick viewers into thinking that he is a regular character, only to shock them by having him killed. This idea was eventually deemed too time-consuming (having to develop alternative opening credits for use with just this one episode) and was dropped.

- The pilot episode, "Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest," ends with Buffy, Willow, and Xander joking about the possible ways Buffy could get kicked out of school, and Giles sighing, "The Earth is doomed." The last episode, "The Chosen," contains a scene near the end where the three kids plan a trip to the mall and Giles sighs, "The Earth is definitely doomed."

- When Harmony asks Cordelia if they are going to the Bronze, she says it's Friday and there is no cover. But when Darla and the vampires go there later, we see the bouncer counting money.

- Luke feeds on several people on stage at the Bronze, then lets them fall lifeless to the floor. Yet after Buffy kills Luke, an overhead shot of the stage area shows no bodies lying on the floor.

Bloopers:

- Buffy is never told what the cover charge is to get into the Bronze and has never been there before, but somehow she gives the bouncer the correct amount and just walks in the club.

- In the first classroom scene when Buffy doesn't have her own textbook, she shares Cordelia's. The teacher asks them open to page 63, but Cordelia opens the book almost at the beginning.

- When Angel meets Buffy, he says that he thought she'd be taller, implying that he'd never seen her before. Later, in "Becoming, Part One," we see a flashback of Angel watching Buffy from afar, proving this wrong (or a deceitful statement for no good reason). Angel also mentions the sighting to Buffy in "Helpless."
