Man, those writers really don't try hard enough to keep their continuity straight.

It has been established that Whedonverse Vamps can consume fluids other than the blood they subsist on, but they can't eat solid foodstuffs.

So how then does Spike mention being able to eat the occasional fistful of Wheatabix with his cup of blood and not suffer any ill effects? Doesn't add up. Lol.
 
Spike liked those onion blossom things as well, but Angel never really ate. Maybe it's an age thing? Angel was older than him. I don't know, does seem like a plot hole.
 
Yeah, I guess now that people point it out, it seems like a plot hole. But vampire lore and how they function was never a important point of the show. So I can live happy. 🙂

I could be wrong, but always I thought they could eat but didn't like to because there was no point of it and food was tasteless to them. This certainly wouldn't be the first plot hole!

Haha it was never stated that anything bad happens if they eat...the taste is just bland. Spike loves hot wings or buffalo wings or...something and those onion things, so clearly they can, maybe he just does it to pass the time. Plus, we all know how much Angel loves to torture his already tortured soul.
 
There were two vamps eating popcorn in Crush, so Spike isn't the only one enjoying human food.
 
Doesn't really make sense for them to be able to eat though, how do they digest the food? It's one thing on the show that will never make sense for me and that is funny but that I wish they would have left it out.
 
Like PB said Angel mentioned that vampires CAN eat but they can't TASTE the food, so that's why most of them don't take any. But then, I wonder how Spike could enjoy those tasty onion rings. Maybe it's not only his haircut and heart who makes him special. 😉
 
I just assumed that they could eat human food, but it wouldn't sustain them like blood. And human food tastes different as a vampire, probably bland or tastless, so they just don't bother eating it when there's plenty of delicious blood to feed on instead.

That's why Spike is cool.

As others have said: they can but don't have to, (and don't necessarily get much out of it). Here's how I think of it: Angel has always been content to be a victim of his situation, in a lot of ways, when it comes to his personal life. Not always, (and sometimes for very good reason), but it's there. He limits his indulgences, and food is no exception. He's had much, much longer than Spike to feel guilty about what he's done, and it shows quite often in the way in which he resigns himself to the fact that he is a vampire with a constricted diet and life is miserable, etc.
Spike on the other hand quickly finds ways to make blood more interesting and/or full of texture. He eats food because of his relish for life. He'll be damned if he's not going to try everything he can, especially if he's going to be around for an eternity. And he has fun with it.

Spoilered for possible grossness...
They could take the bulimic approach if they can't digest it (which, I definitely agree, they shouldn't be able to do). If they enjoy eating, they can do so, but they'll have to use, um, stomach antiperistaltics to bring it out again. Which would mean only vamps passionate about the joy of eating would bother doing it in the first place... a mold which I could more easily envision Spike (physical zealous brawler) to fit than Angelus (cerebral artist of pain).
