ILLYRIAN
Druish Pervonian Wizard
A Volatile Friendship.
David stood high on the sand dunes, he looked down to those he thought as his children though they were neither his, nor were they children. The couples Gavin and Myra, Anders and Bethany were who he thought of. They lay quietly, watching the peaceful night sky. David saw the tinderbox in each of them was primed and ready to go off he knew a touch of excitement could be uncontainable and make them an uncontrollable weapon of hate.
David didn’t like the thought that they might explode that nothing and no one would be there for them to explode upon. He called for them to follow him, he told them he would lead them into the town’s park. Anders was not impressed as he had often visited the park with Bethany, not once had one been found.
David suggested his path would direct them to where the fun would be, he admitted that those in the park were early drunks or people high on drugs that caused hallucinations; David’s favourite kind of drug for others to take maybe he should let his children go, that should they be in groups of two, he would make their night a memorable one. Letting his children kill all but one would give that one left many recriminations for months to come. But just for once the park was empty though Bethany said it was nice to have green lights in the tree tops as it appeared as though the trees had life.
David told each of them to cross the car park and head for the nightclub as vampires were known to meet there. As they entered the car park they became werewolves. They followed people who were merely there to find their car, making loud scratching sounds on the cars but keeping out of sight the werewolves made the people unsure if they were being followed.
Crossing the rest of car park was fun, they chased each other between, over and under the cars. Though they became people before they entered the nightclub, David paid the entrance fee for each of them, once inside the nightclub it didn’t take them long to see who the vampires were.
They had two drinks before they left to go behind a group of cars. Hidden from view they each morphed from human to werewolf, except David. He collected their clothes and went back into the nightclub, he chose to sit at the bar and watch the excitement. Silently the four werewolves crept on all fours to behind the nightclub bouncer. Gavin let out a long low growl purely to promote fear in the bouncer who turned as Gavin stood up on his hind legs and repeated the growl. With the bouncer running from there they were they deliberately slammed the doors open, patrons screamed and ran in all directions.
The chaos that was created was enjoyable to watch, humans panicked but the vampires didn’t they faced the werewolves three to one. David noticed two girls at the bar hadn’t moved nor had they shown any sign of fear. He went to sit next to them and asked if they liked the show.
The elder yet shorter of the two said she was unsure, David noticed the other wore high heels but the older one didn’t, he realised they would be nearly the same height. David offered his hand to them, a long held greeting gesture. “My name is David, who and what are you?”
The elder looked at him allowed a curt smile then shook his hand. “My name is Buffy I am a vampire slayer.” David looked to the other one and offered his hand to her. “My name is Dawn, Buffy is who I want as my sister and she is the leader of an army of vampire slayers.” David smiled to them he was glad, at last there was someone he could talk to.
“Thank you Dawn, Buffy, I am glad to meet you. As I said my name is David, though I would not say this to them my friends the werewolves, I am their leader.” Buffy kept quiet as Dawn proclaimed her sister as leader of a hundred or more slayers in the town, it could be many thousand throughout the world. David was happy he congratulated Buffy at having someone so proud of her.
He turned to the dance floor, he looked at the werewolf that walked towards him, David acknowledged him then gave him the clothes for the four of them. “I will wait for you here, as hopefully these two will.”
When the four approached the bar David had moved his stool and was sat facing them. “Buffy, Dawn I’d like you to meet Anders, Gavin, Bethany and Myra,” he said.
They each greeted Buffy and Dawn and invited them back to their house Dawn spoke of her surprise that they had a house. David looked to Buffy and saw she was reticent, so he suggested they go to a tavern for a drink which Buffy agreed to, she said she would go to the house once they knew each other better.
They left the nightclub, Buffy and Dawn went for their car David said they were parked by the town’s park that they’d meet at the exit where it met the road. Buffy was at a loss for words when David pulled up by her window on a motorcycle. David told her to follow them, all through the town they seemed to have green traffic lights and once out on country roads Dawn kept egging her to go faster, eventually they pulled into a tavern.
Buffy and Dawn parked next to them and went into the tavern behind them. They were told to go and sit down, Buffy felt good in her-self that someone else was buying Dawn and her a drink. She’d had boyfriends in the past who had bought her drinks but none of them had ever bought both of them a drink, the closest had been Spike although he had never bought the drinks, he nicked them.
Sat around the table Dawn couldn’t contain her excitement she asked them why they rode old British motorcycles and why all of them were BSA’s. Myra grinned she said it was David’s idea to ride BSA’s. He had told her that werewolves in a car just didn’t seem right and the bikes had to be English because they seemed most suitable. Also that as they were all made in the fifties, if people did look at them they took more notice of the bikes not them.
David looked to Buffy and raised his eyebrows as Dawn was salivating at the thought of being on one of the bikes. Buffy mentioned that Dawn was old enough to choose David agreed but he added that she would have to know what she was letting her-self in for. “I can appear as a werewolf like they do but it wasn’t and it isn’t all of what he was, I am the Incubus,” said David.
Images flooded into Buffy’s mind of her sister being seduced into the dark. “As you are the vampire slayer I will trust you with the truth I am their leader yet I am also their creator, I am the creator of all werewolves. What you see in the films is all wrong as the reason for the Incubus is to create werewolves, when a werewolf bites a vampire it always overbites. The third row back in our mouths the teeth are hollow, when we suck the blood from a vampire all its demon seed goes into us and the person who was the body slowly falls apart until only the skeleton remains.
Like many animals and birds can smell water from miles away we can smell a vampire from miles away. He walked outside with Buffy, they sat on a bench seat at a table and with their feet up they looked at the stars. Buffy smiled it was the one thing she wanted for every slayer, to know when a vampire was a few miles away. Many was the time she had walked along a roadside and she felt a vampire was near.
She remembered those times, her dreams might be prophetic and speak of horrific times ahead. But it was those other times, the times she could tell no one about when she only had a blocks warning. Enough time to internalize the sheer panic as she knew she could never tell her mother. “What I’d give for a slayer to have a few miles warning,” said Buffy out loud.
The shock hit her hard. “I’m sorry I wasn’t aware I would say that out loud.” David thought about it. “I agree it would be of benefit to you, give me two days, I will see what I can do. Tell Dawn I’ll take out for a spin later.”
He saw that look in her eyes, that look of fear for a friend then he realised what it was and laughed he told Buffy that she believed what the humans had guessed and got wrong. Just because those Catholic priests like doing horrible things to little boys and girls it didn’t follow that those of the Devil would.
He became quiet, it might lead to an answer as he would ask the Devil. It had been a while since they had spoken. David told Buffy that she was there because of something up there. Call them the powers that be or God, it certainly wasn’t three men on whom the watchers became a reality. David asked Buffy the question, if man’s best friend was a dog when taken fifty notches up the ladder what animal would be the Devil’s best friend?
Buffy looked at him, she thought of a Lion or a Tiger, the Black Panther! It was almost what she said but she stopped herself the answer seemed obvious though she was reticent to say it but because no other answer fulfilled itself in her mind, she had to say it was and is the Werewolf.
David replied that as he cared for all werewolves does it not follow that he and the Devil would be friends, as he is with God. Buffy stared at him.
“Some churches might have you believe that God and the Devil hate each other, they say what they want you to believe, but they were not there, they do not know. They say guesses and tell you to that they are right,” said David.
Buffy automatically asked him why she should believe him. “I was there, I saw what really happened.” Buffy faced him with great doubt. “Tell me,” said David, “when you move house what is almost the first thing you do?” Buffy thought about what he might refer to. “Someone to watch over that bloody great hound you have?” Instantly Buffy knew he had spoken the truth, she heard him tell her that the Devil liked him so much he had created him as Incubus so that he would always be a friend to his favourite pet.
When the Devil became the Devil he had been thrown out of Gods heaven for the control he forced on others of God’s creatures. But the Devil liked his new role of watching over the dead, he held no grudge against God. When God forgave him they became friends again. It was he who the Devil had created, to be of help to him that spawned the great evil. Many a time the Devil and God had shared a laugh at the stupid humans that spoke of the Anti-Christ, it was the Anti-God they feared, the one that the Devil had created, the one known as Son.
Buffy faced him, she longed to know how the vampires had become. “God created them,” stated David, “the vampires were once such a peaceable loving creature as any you could wish for, then the Son began to steal them, and he began to corrupt them, he took all of them and made more.”
David saw he had given a lot of unknown information to Buffy, she needed time to digest it all.
“Leave now and return in two days,” he said.
It was two days later that Buffy returned to the tavern, she had gone into the bar but David wasn’t there. She bought a drink, thought of the table where she had been so happy. It may have been that the Incubus had seduced her though it had been many a year since she had been that happy.
She didn’t care if he had, so what if the Incubus wanted to seduce her, she was up for it as long as she could kill a vampire or two a day. She felt the warmth of her smile, she stopped at the door. David was sat at their seat, trying so hard to be seen as casual Buffy sat beside him.
But she had misjudged the distance between them and her hips touched his as she sat down, a charge like electricity was released in her body, it took her breath away. As she faced him she felt the blood run to her cheeks, she was so embarrassed.
“What I didn’t get to say to you about taking Dawn for a spin, in all the years I lived I,” he faced her, “I am older than the Son of the Devil yet I am still what you humans know of as a virgin.” Buffy forgot her embarrassment, her fears for Dawn but she secretly prepared for what might be the greatest platonic love she had ever known.
David looked to her, he said about the twitch of her eyelid, he said that he recognised it. He asked her to say it, Buffy grinned to him she knew she was like an open book but to open herself further to him. Not that, forget about that, I want to hear of that nagging feeling behind those beautiful eyes. Buffy looked inside, at what he might refer to.
Suddenly she looked wide eyed to him, her mouth opened wide, she breathed in deeply. “I can feel a vampire, it is heading this way, it is five miles away. How did you do it,” asked Buffy. Simple, he replied, both the Devil and God hate the Son and they both hate vampires, so when I suggested a way to help them both, it was done.
Come on said David he stood up and drank the rest of his drink, as he walked beside Buffy towards his BSA he held her hand and faced her. Just so that you know the love you feel for me is returned, he kissed her cheek. They went and stood next to his bike as the vampire drew closer they looked to each other and smiled. Buffy looked to the road as the vampire drove passed.
David was on his bike, it burst into life, Buffy stepped on a pillion passenger’s footrest and swung her leg over to the other, she leant forward her hands on David’s shoulders, she whispered to him. “Dawn is going to be so p’d off with me, getting a ride on your bike before she did.”
