I'm studying for a midterm exam and noticed in Erikson's stages of psychosocial development (describes how personalities develop throughout life) that the 8 stages are remarkably similar to the themes and stories in Buffys seasons. I thought I might be reaching at first but hear me out... it's actually really helped me remember each stage by linking it to each Buffy season.
  1. Trust vs. Mistrust- Buffy learns to trust her friends, Angel and her calling...
  2. Autonomy vs. Doubt/Shame- Buffys autonomy (self-governance) vs. Kendras autonomy, Doubt/Shame with Angel(us); Buffy feeling guilty about it (see Innocence)
  3. Initiative vs. Guilt- Buffys methods vs Faiths methods & Faith not feeling guilty for her reckless manslaughter/murder
  4. Industry vs. Inferiority - Buffy vs. the Initiative/Authority (Professor Walsh, Government)
  5. Identify / Role Confusion- Buffy studying her slayer identity; Dawn confused about her identity and role
  6. Intimacy vs. Isolation- Buffys depression & “intimacy” w/Spike
  7. Generativity vs Stagnation- Buffy & Scoobies changing things (rules), empowering others
  8. Integrity vs. Despair - Buffy staying true to herself, fighting evil; despair as the world is out to get her more than ever in Season 8
Am I crazy or do they totally sync up? I may be reaching but it's interesting to think it could've had some influence in the progression of the characters over the seasons. It's helped me study anyway.

Similar is true for all coming of age stories. Thats why they appeal so much, because we can all relate to the stages. Especially if we are going through them as the characters are.

Thats absolutely true of Buffy for me, and a reason I cling to it. It represents a time of growth, and a reminder that forward is the way.
