BUFFY AND DAWN'S THUNDER EGG.
It took a long time but Willow convinced Buffy that it would be
easy to get a Ph.D., then she had left to go on holiday. The
thought of Buffy realising she had been conned gave Willow
many humourous moments.
Buffy was being coached by Giles in what he thought the horrific
cause of helping Buffy to get a passing grade for a doctorate in
Philosophy. He didn't rate Buffy's chances of success, her
argument that philosophy should be spelt with at least one f
only added to that belief and it brought about more than a few
heated discussions. Giles thought her repeated mentions of that
were getting a little old. Buffy realised that Giles's intolerance to
her comments about the f's in philosophy was growing thin, so
she told her other friends to lay it on thick..
It was the weekend and Giles had gone to visit Buffy at her
house, the intention was to do some training. Giles was meant to
be teaching Buffy about mind control and how to do it. They had
a cuppa together, chatted for an hour or so before the
embarrassing silences began. They agreed to go for a walk into
the local graveyard. Still the silences continued to happen. It was
during one of those silences that Buffy informed Giles that some
vampires used to think it was great fun to target people who
had killed themselves. Giles asked her what benefits doing that
could have, Buffy sat with her thoughts for several minutes
before answering him. "Prior to 1823 in England those who had
killed themselves were buried away from the churchyard, so no
danger of consecrated soil, oh," she continued, "and why they,
the vampires thought it was so funny because the people had
killed themselves to stop a problem from affecting them. Then
they were given an eternity to remember the problem."
"Maybe that is why people think vampires are evil," added Buffy.
"No," replied Giles, "I am fairly sure that there is another
reason."
Buffy was about to tell Giles another massive revelation but she
was motioned to stay quiet. "There is that sound again, I heard
that sound once before," said Giles, "but that was at night."
They kept walking, "I am sure it is louder now, we must be
getting closer to what ever is making the sound." "Oh? what
sounds did you hear in a graveyard at night? and is this the same
sound? and what sound is it?" asked Buffy.
"There was a light tapping sound that I heard once, that was ten
years before you were born, at 3 in the morning if my memory
serves me correctly. I remember I was walking through a grave
yard in Plymouth in the UK, I went to where the sound was
coming from only to find some bloke was altering what was
engraved on a headstone," Giles thought about what he was
saying, Yes I do remember that he was a bit upset. He told me
some pratt had spelt his name wrong."
Doing her best to ignore his poor attempt at humour, Buffy
looked at her pen, "Do they make these in wood Giles?"
"Why?"
Buffy looked at him while picking up a pencil, "You might want
to get your knees dirty." "Why would I do that?" asked Giles.
"Behind you, there is a vampire." Giles knelt down in the mud
as Buffy prepared to throw the pencil, "Oh, it is not a vampire,
sorry Giles," said Buffy trying not to smile.
The person walked towards them, saying hello to Giles as he
passed them. Buffy watched him go past.
"I think he was gay," said Buffy. Giles looked at her "Why
would you think that?" "If you had to choose between a
gorgeous blonde, that's me and an old bloke to say hello to who
would you pick?" asked Buffy, "Giles? er Giles? what is it?"
"That hissing sound Buffy, what does it sound like to you? it
isn't a snake," remarked Giles.
"It could be some-one with an aerosol can." "That is a good idea
Buffy, what made you think of that?"
"I can see some-one doing it, ooh I wonder, maybe they spelt
his name wrong?"
"Is it a vampire?" Giles gave a wry grin to Buffy.
They kept to the path around the graveyard, before long they
were back at the house.
Dawn and Willow were sat on the sofa talking about the holiday
photos that Willow had.
As Buffy and Giles came into the room.
"Look what Willow has given us."
Buffy looked at it then to Giles who looked about as perplexed
as she was. "Don't you know what it is?" asked Willow. Giles
appeared curious but he was not forthcoming with an explanation
for it." "It is a thunder egg," said Dawn.
"I know what a Thunder Egg is but that is not one, a Geode
maybe," said Giles. "I was told it is one," said Willow.
"What is one?" asked Buffy.
"It is the name given to a rock. A hollow centred one is known
as a Geode, it has a thick lining of gem stones, all the Thunder
Eggs of the Geode type I have seen have been just a bit bigger
than a Rock Melon. Another thing is they usually have the
appearance of a rock, so something that is black, oval in shape
and almost the size of a Watermelon is not one," said Giles.
"What is it then?" asked Willow. "No idea," replied Giles.
"I did it! I did it! I found something other than Synchronized
Swimming he knows nothing about," shouted Willow as she
danced around the room.
Dawn looked at her then at it. "What should we do with it?"
"If I had been given that I would put it in a fish tank with a soft
bed and a heater lamp, then listen to what-ever reasons your
visitors think of it," said Giles.
"So Will? where did it come from?" asked Buffy.
"I was in an antiques shop in a place called Shark Bay, the owner
said it was found locally. I thought it would make the ideal gift
for some-one who has everything, or you and Dawn, speaking of,
where is Dawn."
"Gone to get something to put the Geode in," remarked Giles.
"Why, what for?" asked Buffy.
"So that it can take pride of place in here."
"That's a thought, the gems that are meant to be in them, are
they worth much?" asked Buffy.
"Not really, they have nice colours but they are mainly silica,
mind you the item itself can be worth quite a bit. From what I
was told a complete one is worth more than a broken one, why?"
"Just thinking Giles," said Buffy, "if we make a hole in it, just to
show off the colours."
"Not really how it works, it's a bit like a bottle of wine, it may
be good said to be good quality stuff and that is what people pay
for but until it is opened no one knows, it is just a gamble really."
Dawn came back into the room, "You are not thinking about
breaking it open are you?"
"Thinking about it, that is all."
"I should hope so."
Buffy, Willow and Giles went into the garage, as it had been
converted to a training room for Buffy. Dawn stayed in the front
room polishing the egg. She made sure no-one was nearby a few
times as she realised that she had been talking to the egg.
During the evening, while Buffy and Willow were preparing the
meal. (When I say preparing the meal, what I really mean is
they were at the door paying for the pizza).
Dawn asked Giles, "Could be a magic egg as several times it
seemed to be talking to me."
Giles considered what Dawn said.
"I have heard of rocks moving along the ground, never heard of
one that talks though, now if it had been singing I could believe
it," said Giles.
"Singing you'd believe but not talking? why?" asked Dawn.
"Don't you know, there is a lot of good rock music," said Giles
starting to grin.
Dawn did her best to ignore him, she was aided by Willow and
Buffy as they came back into the room with both of the Pizza's.
They were munching their way through the first of the Pizza's
when Dawn exclaimed that the egg was moving. They each
stared at it. Dawn suddenly stood up then rushed out of the room,
much to every ones surprise. She came back in with a heavy
blanket, put it on the sofa then placed the egg on it.
"That is nice of you Dawn, and using your blanket, very
perceptive of you," said Giles. "Like you said Giles, it is a bit on
the large side, supposing the creature inside isn't that big there
could be a lot of runny egg white," stated Dawn.
"It is good that you'd use your own blanket though."
"Oh it isn't my blanket," remarked Dawn, "My name is Billy, not
silly. The blanket is Buffy's." "Great!" commented Buffy.
Half an hour later the egg split, not wanting to spoil her kinder
surprise Dawn waited until the shell started to fall open,
revealing a strange looking creature. Dawn gently stroked it's
long neck, luckily it took a liking to the Pizza topping. They
were guessing at what it was. Giles said it looked like a dinosaur
they were starting to agree with Giles when it suddenly opened
up a pair of wings. "Giles! it is a dragon!" exclaimed Dawn.
"And it is so cute," added Willow.
Giles and Willow stayed the night. They took it in turns to stay
awake, just in case the baby dragon woke up. It was nearly six
the next morning that Dawn went into the kitchen, she took
some of the Pizza topping into her room. Back in the kitchen she
asked Giles about the place he had in England, she wanted to
know if it had any land. "It has an acre or two."
"We need more than that," said Dawn, "I got a surprise this
morning that dragon has grown a bit, it is now almost thirty
centimetres long. If it keeps getting bigger in size?"
"So I have a look at the rentals," said Willow, "If there is any
where that has a hill by it that would be good. It can make a
cavern for itself."
"You now, this could be a blessing in disguise," said Dawn, "If
rn how to fly on it I could tell Buffy where the vampires are."
"I wonder if the dragon can breathe fire?"
"That's a good thought Will," said Buffy.
The dragon flew into the kitchen and started to help Dawn finish
her Porridge. A distinctive smell began to waft about the room.
They all looked to the dragon.
"Er Dawn, I think you should stop having porridge," said Giles.
"Be grateful I don't have All Bran for breakfast."
