Buffy's First Parachute Jump
Buffy was stood towards the front of the plane, checking everything that she wore. She was more than just a little bit nervous at what it was she was about to do. But she was adamant that she would do it. Once twice or maybe more she looked at the straps that circled her body. She had to stop her hand into the bags she carried on her back.
Because, as she remembered, she had already checked to see if the parachute was there. She stared out of the windows of the plane and thought that she would soon be out there, able to see all around. Buffy stood there, she waited to feel the instructor tap her on her shoulder when he would tell her to jump.
Buffy told herself that the laces on her boots were tied, she quickly looked at her boots.
"Yes my boots are tight."
Buffy told herself that she was all strapped up, once again she began to check all her straps then she felt the bulges in her bags that she carried on her back.
"I have got the parachute on my back. The straps have all been checked and all I have to do is jump," said Buffy confidently, well she tried to sound confident.
Buffy looked at the sky outside of the plane.
"When I get told to jump all I have to do is jump out of this plane, and I will jump." Trying to build up her confidence, "I will jump, I am not nervous, I know this'll be a good experience," she looked out of plane, "Well I was told this will be a good experience."
Buffy tried to concentrate on getting herself prepared for the jump. She looked at the gauge on her lapel. "This is the er, er this will let me know what the height is." She was concentrating on what she was doing so much she didn't hear the pilot shout to the jumpers. "We are at 3,000 feet. This is the required jump height. We will be over the drop zone in twenty."
"Is everyone ready? You will love this," said the jump instructor. But Buffy didn't hear him either, she was so intent with what she was wearing, she pulled her gloves tight, then made sure the straps on her crash helmet were tight. "A crash helmet?"
The jump instructor told everyone to pull the handle to open the parachute at 1500 feet.
Buffy looked to the instructor. "What did you just say?"
"When you land keep your legs bent and together," said the jump instructor.
Buffy made sure the belt on the overalls was tight around her waist.
"Why do I say keep to keep your legs together?" asked the jump instructor.
Buffy pulled the straps that went between her legs to make sure they were as tight as they could be. After all the last thing she wanted was to fall out of the harness. Buffy loosened the end of the straps and tried pull the straps tighter. "Ooh crap." Her eyes bulged, "Yep, yep, them's is tight enough." Buffy had a mental image of a skateboarder with a leg each side of handrail.
"Are you all ready, good. Get in line please and don't forget if you have any of you have any questions, any questions use your radio to contact me, it is on your lapel," said the jump instructor.
"Any second now he will tap me on the shoulder and tell me that it is time to jump," said Buffy.
Buffy felt relaxed she watched as the clouds floated passed the plane, she felt so serene. She felt a little tug from the line that she was attached to then she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. She turned to see who it was but no one was there. She tried to think what had just happened. "That is it," she said to herself, "Someone said go. But go what?"
Buffy was surprised to see a cloud going passed, she innocently looked to it, then around. "Err guys, where are you, where's the plane gone?"
Buffy was free falling through the air.
"I wonder if the jump instructor had any last words of wisdom for us?" She fell another two hundred feet, "Though maybe I shouldn't have said the LAST words of wisdom."
"I need someone to help me, to tell me what to do," Buffy saw a group of people below and to the side of her, "How could I catch up with them?"
But they disappeared into a cloud. Buffy noticed that the ground was getting closer she looked about the sky.
"I wish I knew where the others were. I'd like to know where I am or where I am meant to be, or going? Or if I'm going the right way."
She looked around and tried to see the others. "How many others are there?" She kept looking.
"I know I'll wait until they open their parachutes. They will be easier to see then." She smiled to herself, then she stopped her smile. "How do I open my parachute?" She suddenly had that look of success and punched the air, then realised the only thing between her and the ground was air. "Sorry, nothing personal," Buffy called to the air.
"All I have to do is wait until I am at one thousand five hundred feet then pull the cord."
Watching the dial as it passed two thousand feet and began to get near the required height.
"I hope I catch up with the others soon, oh I know." She held her arms at her side, and started to speed towards down. For some reason or other the tune Iron Man ran through her head.
Suddenly she flashed passed the jump instructor. "Oops I'd better slow down, quick," she said. She pulled the handle and the parachute opened. The straps that held the parachute to her became very tight as all her weight pressed down onto them. "Holy bloody Jesus!"
She desperately wanted to loosen the straps at her groin.
"Frigging hell! And I thought these straps were tight before, but now! Holy jesus, effing crap!"
She looked up into the sky. (too God) "Sorry."
Still it could be worse, Buffy had a mental image of a skateboarder with a leg each side of handrail. "Yep that's the one."
Breathing in deeply, she looked around.
"Now where are the others?"
She looked side to side then saw a parachute on her right.
She then saw a second parachute and tried to turn to face them.
"Oh damn, how do I get this thing to turn about? Should I pull this cord a bit? She turned to face the seven other parachutes.
"That is better! I hope they know where they are going."
She looked down at the ground, it was getting bigger, closer.
"Well there isn't much choice there. Now how did he say to land?"
Buffy looked at what her overalls. "Aha, the radio!"
She smiled then pressed the transmit button on the radio.
"Er hello, is anyone there? Can anyone hear me?"
Buffy waited for a reply, she tried to keep her ear as close as she could to the radio.
"You are listening to the sounds of the seventies on triple J 895 on the FM."
"What the bloody hell....."
"Sorry, I've always wanted to say that. Hi, that's Buffy isn't it? I was wondering when I'd hear from you. How is it going?" asked the jump instructor.
"Ruddy wonderful, I'm having great fun, and what you said regarding that radio station. YOU ROTTEN BLOODY BASTARD!"
A second later. "Actually, there is something I'm not too sure about," asked Buffy.
She pressed the transmit button on the radio again. "Over."
"Ask away, that's what I'm here for." "Over," said the instructor.
"What is the correct way to land this thing?"
"Not a problem Buffy, just let me know when you are a bit closer to the ground. If you ease the parachute forwards a bit, that will help, then bend your knees. When your feet have touched the ground, roll to the side until your knees are along the ground. You should be ok," said the jump instructor.
The radio is silent for several seconds.
"Err, do you want the good news or the bad news?" asked Buffy.
"I'd prefer the good news first please, then the bad."
"The good news is I'm on the ground, well, nearly. I'm in a tree. The bad news is I only heard ease the parachute forwards. I missed the rest. Maybe I should have asked you to keep the answer short," said Buffy.
"As long as all's well. How far from the ground are you?" asked the jump instructor.
"I'm about fourteen foot from the ground, can you come and catch me as there is a ditch below me, and it is full of water," said Buffy.
The radio goes quiet again.
"Buffy, Hello... Buffy?"
Buffy only heard the wind as it rushed passed her.
"Are you going to be very long?" asked Buffy.
"No problems Buffy, you'll be alright. I'll be with you in a minute, or so. Just remember when you do land, gather your parachute. We don't want the wind taking you for a wild ride do we?" "Aghh Oh crap."
A blurr of a parachute flashes passed where Buffy is hanging.
Buffy's radio begins to crackle.
"I missed that, can you repeat the message?â"It's your jump instructor here, do you want the good news or the bad news?"
"Definitely the bad news first, I do enjoy a good laugh," stated Buffy.
"What I was saying about gathering up your parachute, I was right. It's pretty windy down here."
"And the good news?"
"I know exactly where you are now, and hey, it's a nice view from these trees isn't it?" asked the jump instructor.
The radio was silent for a few seconds.
"Over."
