Salutations!

My friends have been pestering me to join the Buffy Boards for some time, but I’m only now relenting. It looks very fun here! I watched Buffy for the first time a little over a year ago. I watched the whole show start to finish in less than two weeks, in the middle of a rather busy semester. I didn’t sleep much. Then I watched it again (at a much more reasonable pace) this past summer, and that’s when Buffy really got me. Then… I started watching Angel. Captivating show. Often not good, but always captivating. Several times during the first season I quit watching, swearing I would never watch another episode. (I Will Remember You and Hero were particularly harrowing.) But of course, I came back. Angel got to me. Now I’m on my second watch-through of Angel. I’m dragging my friends into it with me. I truly do love BtVS and Angel. The Buffyverse is such a special world, and I’m glad that I get to imagine within it. I enjoy reading Buffy Studies articles when I’m avoiding my coursework, and I think the Buffy Boards will become a favorite haunt as well. I’m excited to talk to you all!

<3, Kit

Re: your speed of Buffy viewing: I find the way you watch television to be deeply frightening on occasion.
Welcome to the forum! As fan forums go, this place is more intelligent and civil than most and I do admire someone who can finish a 144 episode / 144 hour show in two weeks, which is 336 hours.

We had (and the time is coming up soon) where we have the Buffies, our version of the Oscars and there are awards you can win for your posts during the year and various similar accomplishments.

I often use 1.5 times speed to watch YouTube videos and it saves a lot of annoyance since a lot of videos take far longer than they shoud.

Thank you! Though I must admit, I watched a lot of episodes on 1.25 or 1.5 speed on my first viewing. And I didn’t sleep much. I wouldn’t exactly recommend my television watching habits haha. Also, what’s the Winifred Burkle Award? That seems fun!
Welcome! Always cool to have another fan on board. Dont worry if threads are old, you can still post in them (unless they are in the cemetery) and re-spark some old topics 🙂 Many of us have been here a long time so we dont have the perspective of new viewers and its fun to read. Looking forward to your posts!

Welcome! Any favorite seasons or characters?
There’s so many Buffy characters to love. For a few favorites… Joyce, Giles, Oz, Tara, Anya, Spike, Drusilla, Dawn, Faith… It’d be easier to list characters I don’t love! I might say season five if pressed for a favorite Buffy season. My favorite Angel characters are Lindsey & Lilah, Lorne, and Gunn. I love Cordelia dearly, and I love seeing her on Angel, but I have a hard time saying that she’s a favorite Angel character due to how the show handles her character. Seasons two and three of Angel are interesting, enjoyable, and mostly well-executed. They’re almost good enough to make me forgive everything else that happens on that show. Almost!

Well I will say this for you, you are not afraid of a bit of derision.
You stated that there are so many Buffy characters to love. (I noticed that Spike and Drusilla got a mention though Angel did not, I say that only because you omitted the name Darla ( an oversight I am sure ).

Does your username have any meaning, I only ask so that we might understand you better, then if that can be so we may invite you to understand us as well I'm tempted to say lucky you, not tempted enough though.

Do enjoy yourself though.

Thank you for the welcome! As for derision… I may disagree with some popular opinions on the forum, but all discussion is in good fun. I like hearing what other people think. Especially since this forum has so many older fans. As a newer fan, it’s really interesting for me to get a snapshot of some of the common opinions that have been hashed out over the years.

I do love Darla, especially Darla on Angel! As I said, it’s hard to list all of the best Buffy characters. There’s so many!

I have a hard time listing Angel as a favorite Buffy character. I don’t always like him on Buffy, If only because his plot arc is SO tied to Buffy & Buffy only. He barely interacts with any of the other characters, and we don’t get enough of his backstory on Buffy to truly understand him. Also, because he is a love interest for Buffy, the show hesitates to explore his moral complexities (of Angel, not Angelus). Angel on Buffy kind of has to be depicted as a good person because he is Buffy’s love interest. But I think Angel is a lot more interesting when he is shown to be more complex! He wants to redeem himself, but he still does bad things and still hurts people. He cares for others, but he doesn’t always want to. It’s easier for him to isolate himself. He has a cruelty streak that doesn’t go away when he has a soul. Guilt isn’t always enough to keep him from acting badly. That’s interesting! Angel the Series has him interacting with a variety of characters, which gives us the opportunity to see how he reacts to different situations. We get a lot more of his backstory, which gives us context for his current struggles/flaws. And we get to see him not always making the right decision. Which I like!

My username is a play on the word “psychic” and my name, Kit. I’m not actually psychic, if that’s what you’re referring to. I just thought it would be fun to have a slightly mystical username on here 🙂

Hey and welcome to BB!! Watching the entire show in 2 weeks?! WHEW... that's some serious binge-watching going on there. LOL

@psykit,
So, to be known as a serious mystic, I'll go with that regardless if you are or not. Your saving grace as far as I am concerned is that you appreciate Darla.
What I thought was a floor in the directing was how the beautiful Darla appeared when she sired Angel yet in the series buffy she dressed like a moron and had the looks of some dumb bit who had finished in last place of all the runners up to Miss world.
That thing with Angel and Buffy was always and will always be my pet hate.
A girl chosen by The Powers That Be has sex with two vampires? What was she thinking?
If Buffy was trying to save the vampires (demons) she ought to have sex with every one of them. (I really dislike the term, 'to sleep with' as, if they did actually sleep together they probably wouldn't have had sex).

I do like the username psykit,
when I joined the name I would have chosen was being used, Ilyria and as far as I remember (it was 18 years ago) there was a Illyria 1 so I put an 'n' at the end of it and wrote my username in capitals.
A book ( I have still got that book even though it is in a sad state ) I was reading that book at the time and it stated that Illyria was part of an area/ county /shire in Yugoslavia. So I thought a person from there would be an Illyrian.

Personally I would have used a couple of capital letters for your username PsyKit, giving your name in the username the touch of importance, but that's me.

Hm… the capital letters do look nice! I’m used to websites where capital letters aren’t even an option in usernames, so I hadn’t thought about it. I’ll probably add the capital letters when enough time has passed for me to change my username. Thanks for the suggestion! Also, I hope it doesn’t sound rude to say, but I’m impressed that you remember the thought process that went into your username. And that you’ve kept the same name for so long! I was one year old when you joined this forum!

Buffy having relationships with vampires definitely does go against her job description, but that can be interesting. I specifically dislike her relationship with Angel (though I understand this is a contentious thing to say). Aspects of it could have been much more interesting than they are. I would have liked it better if the show had leaned into the fact that Angel’s relationship with Buffy is creepy. Watching Buffy and Angel’s relationship, it feels like I am supposed to see Angel as Buffy's cool older boyfriend. That is how most of the characters in the show act, at least. But when I watch it, I can’t help but see him as a classic predator (literally and figuratively). It makes me uncomfortable to watch such a young girl get into a relationship with a fully grown man, and be expected to see it as cute and romantic.

I also have criticisms for how her relationship with Spike was handled, but I tend to like it better because it is much more willing to show people who are attracted to each other and treat each other badly. I think it better explores the complexities of a slayer and a vampire who are attracted to each other. Also, Buffy is an adult herself by that point in the show (a young adult, but still). There is much less of an extreme power imbalance between Buffy and Spike. Rather, they wrestle with having power over each other. I don’t know that I would call myself a Spuffy “shipper,” as I can’t quite endorse their relationship either, but I do find their dynamic more interesting. Not a lot of good decision making happening on Buffy’s part for sure, but I think it’s sympathetic & understandable. She was having a difficult time.

Buffy having relationships with vampires helps to call into question whether or not the job of the slayer is correct. The slayer kills demons. That’s what she does. The slayer is trained to see all demons as evil and deserving of death. But Buffy has realized, in the course of her missions, that “stake first and ask questions later” often causes problems. She knows she needs to understand the situation before getting straight to the slaying. Buffy, while more progressive than many slayers in this regard (see: the attitudes of the watcher’s council, the slaying styles of Faith and Kendra), still doesn’t quite get to the point of questioning the underlying assumption of “nonhumans are evil." Rather, she is capable of recognizing exceptions. I find it interesting when the show starts to show that “demons” aren’t necessarily evil (or, at least, not inherently more evil than humans), and I often wish they had explored that theme more. Buffy’s relationships with vampires start to get into this idea… but only start to.

@psykit,
I've only been on three websites, one for witches and I managed to 'P off' the owners of the site royally well. I have this belief that Warlocks are on the evil side of witchcraft they were not of that belief so I left that site at the behest of them, I may have referred to them as somewhat thick. Another site I went to was run by the author Kelley Armstrong and her sister that was specifically for people interested in writing. I still keep in touch from time to time. The only other site I have been a member on is this site, originally I had the Avatar of Willow, I changed that to be the one I have. So I have little knowledge of how other sites operate mind you I have a somewhat poor knowledge of how this site works, I am always having my ideas for threads being moved by the kindly people in charge.
If you want to know more about this site go to Bad Eggs and get someone to direct you to what is where, that is also a good way to get yourself known.
One thing you will notice on here are the ability of members to spell names and words other than as intended and when addition or multiplication is offered it can be humourous, though it better to not say anything.
What is interesting is why folk think that character A or character B are attractive or not, but maybe that is tainted by Spike referring to him as Captain Blockhead do I need to say who that is? I did like how Spike spoke of him when he went to LA to see him.

Technically, I think "warlock" means "oath breaker." Which lands them on the bad side.
