Potential Change to BB's Software

Loosing karma comments isn't the end of the world either.
Usually nothing important is written there. That's not what they are meant for after all.
It's nice to get them but I for one does not usually go back and read them again.
(Can't imagine it being that difficult to extend the importer to include the comments though. 😉)

Well I'm not sure if I could make the XF importer do it, but borbole's paid Reputation addon will import them from vb 3.8x *shrugs*. I was thinking if I kept the thread ids from BB i could manually add them...maybe...I need to look at the two databases to see how they're structured but I haven't yet.

I'm reading between the lines here, and there is really only one option: we can move to a new software NOW or we can keep the old software and move to a new software later. Either way, we would still have to end up at XF. Am I right?

Well, it's move now or move to something else later. But most likely it would be XF, just cause the only other option I would consider is IPB and I just don't think they're for us (too much bloat). Of course, things could change down the road, but most likely XF now or XF later.

🙂

I am not tech savvy, so a lot of what you just said sounded like alien-speak to me....based on that, I would say the changes would be great to see! Losing the comments doesn't really make a difference to me so I would say it isn't worth an added expense.

New styles would be fun, getting to choose avatars great, all that jazz.

I know absolutely ZERO about software. That being said you have made BB work for this long so I absolutely trust you know what is best and so i support the change. All this tech speak stumps me but I am absolutely stoked for custom avatar 😀

You don't need to retain all the current skins and a forum poll might be a good idea. I switched to Fresley because the original skin I defaulted to was blue words on a blue background and was almost illegible.

I would welcome a change to the new posts section that would not just mark everything as "read" after you post a reply. The conditions where everything is marked "read" is a bit obscure.

Other than that, migrate everything to your heart's content, especially if the existing software is about to go malignant. I'm sure I can get used to anything - I am on four other boards daily and many more sporadically and they all have unique appearances although some seem to migrate to a common default setting that looks similar.

As far as I'm aware making a comment is for short term use only, so if comments can't be carried over that is no problem.

Just one thing, with regard to fan fiction. When I paste a story into the box provided I often have to try and get the length of the lines right. The software at present sometimes cuts lines short, ie some of the lines are displayed as two or three lines.
Will the same number of characters be allowed in the new software?
That question about the number of characters allowed is also for PM's.

Honestly I haven't compared the two. I know BB's limit is set pretty high, though, because anytime I've tried to post something above it I just raise the limit 😉 You have to have a limit though, otherwise it can be used maliciously (not by members).

Limitation's are okay.
The main problem would be if the number of characters was too low it would mean the number of posts for a story (fan fiction) might get to many.
With regard to PM's, in house competitions of fan fiction people were asked to PM their stories for Buffy's Birthdays and about an Apocalypse. If a smaller number of characters was allowed would it affect bandwidth? And that is if the situation arose again.
I understand what you mean about the malicious content though.

I'm not to bothered about an increase in the number of characters allowed, mainly if the number allowed gets reduced.
