Like, what was he hoping to achieve by turning Giles into a demon, what outcome was his ultimate goal? No clue. In all fairness, he didn't have much of a reason for invoking Janus, either. To watch the world burn? For the lulz? To see the look on Buffy's face when he reverts back after she kills him?

Pretty much. Or perhaps it would be better to say For the Evulz - TV Tropes - and Ethan is specifically mentioned in that.
If Chaos is what you worship, then planning outcomes too much could be considered heresy!

What does worshipping Chaos mean, anyways? He woke up once, said "Hey" to the primordial gods, then went back to sleep. Would anyone really pray to him outside of litanies?
Kidding aside, he did seem fairly well organized when he worked for Mr. Trick. I mean, if Diskordia hates anything, it would be an assembly line. Who knows, the character's motives are never really explored.

Specifically, Ethan worshipped Janus. Who, if I remember correctly, has absolutely nothing to do with chaos!
There is a reason I said "too much" when it came to planning outcomes. 🙂 However, in this case a little planning led to a lot of chaos. Maybe Janus appreciates a little planning if it causes more chaos as a result.
It really was a shame this was his last episode. And, for example, having a character who loved fun chaos as the Big Bad of S6 would have made the season so much more better.

Yes, Janus is the god of doors, of endings and beginnings. Now, all gods have a dark side (We saw that with the Ra-Tet), and maybe Ethan's Order specializes in appealing to some point esoteric darkness. Like, the Furies vs the Kindly Ones.
(How weird is it that Ra is real in this universe and he was killed by Cordelia, Osiris is real, and may have been hurt by Willow, and Thoth was some guy in a up to no good hood? Why do we never talk about that? That's like, Persona level weirdness.)
Ethan could have been like Q, comes in every season, causes trouble, leaves. Instead we get, "how dare Amy not love Willow." But, he's in Groom Lake now.

I would imagine it is a bit more than that. In the Buffyverse, the "gods" have enough power to grant their followers abilities. I am pretty sure that if I worship Taylor Swift it will not result in me suddenly gaining a big bag of money from her.
If it does, though, count me in!
