Teen-Fanged Wasteland

The soft tones of the muzak flooded the elevator on the first floor of the Sunniland Mall. Tyler waited patiently as the car reached the bottom floor, a gentle tone signaled the stop and the heavy metal doors slid open.

“Tyler? Those doors locked yet?” came the call over the walkie-talkie. The voice was Sal’s in the security room. The blonde heavy set man was annoying. Still a pay check was a pay check.

“A moment ok, I’m almost there.”

The mall was already a shell of its former self. There wasn’t a final nail in the death of a mall, just a slow drain of vital life. The victim sinking into a undead state… the lights were on, but no one would be home. The Sunniland Shopping Mall outside of Stockholm, Sweden was much the same. Half empty, slowly decaying, with shades of its former 90’s glory. It was attempt at American style malls that attempted to take advantage of the 90’s economic boom. The dream had faded, and corroded. But the Mall survived, zombie like and still moving, even if it was half dead.

None of that concerned Tyler much. It was just a winter gig. The days in suburban Vancouver in the winter was just as cold, dark, and long. College in Europe sounded like a real adventure, and even working in a mall … it was still a definite upgrade. Everything was foreign, alien even. Still the first few days were routine, getting to know the basics, ignoring the antics of the local teenagers who made fun of him for being the resident rent-a-cop, and a weird Canadian at the same time.

He rounded a corner past the large empty food court. Making his way past the large Orange Julius stand, Tyler paused a moment, the neon of the red and orange sign illuminated a strange sight. A thin young girl, dressed in black leather pants and a black ‘The Cure’ shirt black, jet black hair and light pale skin, strangely hunched over a lumpy fellow at the far end of the modern decorated eating area. She was moving slowly, seemingly unaware of Tyler’s presence.

The walkie-talkie squawked.

“Tyler what the heck?” Sal bellowed in a Swedish accent that still sounded a bit goofy to his ears.

“Man, another goth girl, I’m goanna get her out.” He responded quickly.

“Umm… you can’t be in here a? The Mall is…closed.” He said plainly, as more details of the girls strangeness became apparent.

The girl stopped moving. She turned her head slightly to the side. Tyler caught sight of her cold black eyes. Even from his distance his blood ran cold. That’s when he detected the hint of red near her chin. A long streak of red that rain down her face from the corner of her mouth.

She finally spoke…

“Whoops.” She said in a silky smooth response.

“Guess I lost track of time.” She said her darkly toned voice echoing towards Tyler in a way that gave him chills.

“Who… what?”

“Basically… death.” She said, her lithe form standing up and walking towards him with a confident otherworldy gate.
