As she looked out across the sprawling city below her, the dark-haired Witch could feel each and every being's emotion as they carried on with their daily lives. Each and every one of them had no idea of the struggle that had occurred years ago, the very events that had shaped and molded the future that had sprung up around them. These buildings, the figures in Power, the recently called Slayer, the first once since her, all those years ago, all of them had been put in motion by the spell that day atop the Hellmouth. The final day of Sunnydale's tortured life had given birth to the future that now existed. It had all begun and ended with a single spell. Spreading the Slayer's power had sealed her fate.
Time had been a cruel thing to the Witch. It had showed her time and time again that it could provide love to her, only to take it away as casually as it had been given. It had given her friends and allies, only to make her watch them die. Time had shown her that she had been nothing more than a plaything to something that held more power in its sway than she could possibly ever dream of or imagine. Time was the true master of all the events that occupied the pages of every individual book.
All the emotions below made her feel like something other than a shell, the same shell that she had been for so many years now. Time had done that to her as well, made her as empty and hollow as a dead body lying within the ground. She knew how all of the others felt now. Calendar, both Summers, Harris, Lehane, Giles"¦Maclay. All of them dead, all of them gone, all of them having left this plane to go to a place that she had given up trying to imagine. She would never reach that place, that would be her punishment.
Death was the only thing that she hadn't experienced. There had been hours upon hours where she had imagined it, had dreamed about it, had even begged for it to come and extinguish her flame. But that moment had never come. There was only one person who could possibly grant her that single wish. And the Slayer had been dead now for numerous upon countless years. A forgotten piece of the years and struggles that had faded into dust around her.
As she fingered the almost ancient necklace around her neck, the Witch remembered the sensations of touch from a lover in her previous life. She remembered each and every touch that Tara Maclay had given her out of love and affection. Through the years, many things had faded, but the image of the girl's face had remained against everything else. Even now she could remember the tone of her voice only inches away from her ear.
Closing her eyes, the Dark Woman washed away the memories. She wasn't that person anymore. She hadn't been for some time now. The name of her previous-self had almost vanished completely from her mind, the sound of its letters having gone unsaid for as long as she had wandered the city alone.
Until death finally came to claim her, she would remain alone. Hollow and empty as the un-breathing city below her.
