THE PATH OF THE OTHER

Jenny watched as Giles stepped from the car, he went to the heavy wooden gate in front of the van. After opening the gate he came back to the car and sat at the driver’s seat.
He looked to the rear seats and asked Jenny what she had done so that these two to keep them quiet?

Jenny grinned and pointed to Buffy and Willow. “Who them?” she asked. Giles looked to them. Jenny was amazed what could she do or say that convince those two to keep quiet if they didn’t want to. Giles declared that both Buffy and Willow would do as he wanted them to.

Jenny looked at her watch. “Oh look it is almost nine thirty, time we were there.” Giles drove them further until they were outside the old farmhouse. “Here we are this is our holiday home.” Jenny looked at it and began to agree, “It does look good.” Willow was surprised by what she had said.

“Do you mean you haven’t seen the house before Miss?” Jenny smiled, “I trust then man from the library, for him to do what is right.” Buffy began to laugh, “Jenny is right, Giles knows that if this house and its grounds are not right for us, father will suffer this choice for many a year.”

Jenny, Buffy, Willow and Giles went to stand near the front door of the house, Willow pointed to an old cow’s brass bell that is by the front door. It looks so good hanging there, by the door. “I see that Willow has fallen in love with the front door bell.”

Willow had shaken the bell, and smiled at the sound it made. Buffy said it wouldn’t matter how long she was at the door. No one would answer the door and just as well. You wouldn’t want the door of an empty house to be answered would you?” Buffy grinned to Willow. Giles touched the door and it opened.

Jenny walked into the house, to just beyond the threshold, she turns to face her Giles.
“Look above the doorframe,” said Willow. Jenny did as Willow suggested and looked above the door. “I see it, it reads Welcome are those who are welcome here, to Cathcombe House.”

Giles walked picked up the bags he had left outside the house. “Take two of these and have a wander around the house, decide which rooms will be your bedrooms.” Willow picked up hers and Buffy’s sleeping bags and walked up the stairs. Buffy followed her to the top room.

Buffy was still behind her as they stood in the middle of the floor, “What we need is a sign on the door, Our Room Keep Out.” Willow smiled, “This is the biggest room in the house which is odd as it isn’t referred to as a room. The room does have better views; as an attic is prone to have.” They go to the window and look out into the forest.

Tomorrow we will go on that track and go deep into the forest. I want to see where other witches have lived in their deaths. Buffy was amazed, “Is that the graveyard where the dead witches live? Who are we here to see?” Willow began to nod she told Buffy that they were to go to the wooden church in the graveyard.”

Buffy opened the mud map Giles had given her of the property they had rented. Buffy stated to Willow that there was no church neither in or near the property. Willow let out a small laugh. “There is no graveyard either but there is.” During the afternoon Buffy had wiped the dust from a bookshelf that house a golden trowel in a glass case.

That night Willow had woken in screams, she had dreamt of a young woman leading her into a building that wasn’t there she had spoken to one who was an entity. The entity said she and her friend would go to meet the man who wrongfully killed a distant ancestor.

Buffy knew the day had almost ended, she remembered their breakfast and the walk they had along the track to the graveyard. They had followed the single width path as they wondered to the middle of the graveyard, when they did an old wooden church appeared behind them. Willow wandered into the open doorway.

In a side room the Entity told her the name of the village in East Anglia in England not long after the English civil war had begun. The Entity had told Willow to watch for a young brother and his sister who mother and father had been accused of Witchcraft.

The 6 year old boy had made up the stories of what his mother and father had done, he even condemned his sister to a torturous death; painful in the extreme. The boy had failed to do his chores yet feared his father’s wrath of not getting any tea that evening. Willow and Buffy emerged to tell the magistrates that he had been to willing to kill

The boy had told his fears to a man who worked for the Witch Finder General a man so devoid of humanity he would believe the tale of a child without proof, he had been raised according to the church though all he heard was though shalt not permit a witch to live. The God fearing man had thought it okay to kill without reason.

The Witch Finder General wanted to make a name for himself, he found years of when the tales of children could condemn so many people. Those children implicate people in such a way that when adults helped the tales so it was impossible for the accused to define any innocence and if they tried a red hot poker could extract admissions.

But the days of the Witch Finder General were numbered. England didn’t burn witches as England was a protestant nation, only the nations that were controlled by the Catholic faith burnt people. Caste out he left England when he was twenty seven years old he found passage on a ship headed for America.

Reported to have died when the ship hit rocks he found he employment at the Massachusetts Trading company but he became intolerant of the quiet of religious group, he was secretly impressed that people could be burnt. When he was in his early seventies
But he was still able to convince young girls to lie about people.

Willow and Buffy kept to the background and chose to convince the magistrates that the trials were a pathetic construct of the children’s attempts to improve their lot in life.
Once again the magistrates saw him the children and Matthew Hopkins as a liar and he disappeared into obscurity.

When Willow and Buffy returned to the graveyard at Cathcombe the Entity was happy, as in the case the last woman accused of being a witch and who would have died gave birth to a witch, the Entity knew as a friend.
