The Three Burials of Buffy’s Great Great Grandfather
(on her mother’s side of the family) good onya Joyce!
Buffy had gone to visit Giles in his native homeland and what a weird land it was. It was near to a piece of the country (about the size of Manhattan) that was known as The Devil’s Country. Giles suggested they go for a drive to find where her great great grandfather was buried.
Buffy was surprised as she didn’t know any of her mother’s family came from England. Giles had told Buffy to drive as it may help her to drive on the left hand side. They had been driving for quite a while when Buffy came to a crossroads one where she didn’t know which way to go.
She looked straight ahead and saw the road in front of her was no more than a farm track the roads to the left and the right were given no street signs; she didn’t know which way to go. The map she had given to Giles to read didn’t even mention that there was a junction there.
“Which way Giles?” asked Buffy.
“It doesn’t say Buffy,” replied Giles.
As she looked at which way she should go she saw a grave on the verge opposite. Being curious about why a grave would be there Buffy exited the car and went to it. The first thing she noticed about it was that several plants were placed on the grave but most of them had been blown over.
Buffy tidied the potted flowers then laid the cut flowers around the edge of the grave. Buffy stood then started back to her car but she suddenly stopped. There was a young couple riding on a white horse that was in front of her.
The woman on the horses back told Buffy to turn the car to the right and follow the road to an old empty house, Buffy did as the woman had said, she drove the car to the cottage. Beyond the garden of the house Buffy and Giles found an empty grave.
The headstone of the empty grave said that the interred had been moved to a plot of land in the South Devon village of Torbryan, to where her ancestors body could be watched by the coven of witches. Buffy looked at the map but quickly realised she had no idea where Torbryan was.
As Giles folded the map he saw the place names index on the back of the map, he considered going there but quickly knew that some help was needed as a witches coven was mentioned. Buffy agreed with him they needed someone who had knowledge of why.
Giles rang a friend who promised to ask the woman he had asked for. Giles said he would drive the car as he thought Buffy might like a rest, also that the questions were increasing about her dead ancestor. When they got to the graveyard at Torbryan a woman approached them.
She said the grave they sought was not in the graveyard, his grave had not been allowed in consecrated ground, the vicar of the church waved them to seek directions from a woman who lived in the house with the green roof, near the mound at the end of the village.
Thinking it odd Giles did as he was told, Buffy went with him to the woman’s house. The woman who was with them said the woman of the house is a third generation witch so prepare yourselves for a shock, the body in the grave had been moved to an open field.
Not knowing what to make of what Mildora had said Giles asked her to explain herself. Mildora asked what had led them to there, Buffy said it was to find her ancestor. That they had found out about the village from two people on a horse.
Mildora wanted to know what Buffy had been doing before then and after being told she said that she was one of the few to have heard Kitty talk. Surprised by what Mildora had said he asked why Buffy should be thought of as lucky?
“The man on the horse was Jaime, he was known to be the friend of Kitty Jay, Kitty must have seen Buffy to want to help her as normally people don’t see her,” Mildora smiled to Buffy, “she must have liked the way you tidied her grave. Kitty Jay’s body lies in the ground.”
To get over the shock Giles treated Buffy and Mildora to a proper pub meal in the next village. Mildora began to understand why she had been called to help them that it was to do with Buffy’s ancestor, Mildora said she knew where to go next.
Late that afternoon they arrived at another village, at the outskirts of it was a field, Mildora led them to where a body had been buried. Buffy and Giles were a bit surprised by all the security that was at the site of the grave.
“I thought you would have been used to that, mind you I dare say you’ve never seen this,” said Mildora, “the field was where a group of houses once stood all were owned by one family and all were levelled because of what happened.”
Mildora stood between Buffy and Giles she held their hand nearest to her. She asked them to wait where they stood saying it was dangerous to continue. Buffy looked to Giles who looked to Mildora, “Grass and a field of Wheat or Barley, what else is out there?” he asked.
Mildora pointed to the middle of the field.
“There is the grave you have looked for, it is of Buffy’s great great grandfather though if he is still in the grave no one knows. Many years ago he was known to have taken the form of a vampire, it was a descendent of him that killed him. That is why his body was brought here
His body was brought here to be protected by a coven of powerful witches. Protected from the forces of evil and all was well for decades but the Devil won though he had to rise by the grave.
So if the body is still in the grave is a guess.
The Devil rose here, and according to history the Devil took form on February the 16th 1855. He walked to the end of the land to where the Merry Maidens stone circle is. It is thought by some that the vampire can stay here and be safe.”
Mildora grinned she laughed and said about Buffy’s great great grandfather There may be another reason why you have been such a committed Vampire Slayer, the name Summers is yours to use by right but you can also use the name your ancestor once owned.
He was the first to hold the family name, and given who you are you should be known as Buffy Van Hellsig.” Giles knew then the secret he had always felt, even when they first met he knew there was more, that he had always felt wasn’t just from the Watchers.
