copyright protected. Timeline? Three weeks had passed since
Giles had returned from England, after Dawn told him that her
sister was alive.
The Witches Hammer part 3
Giles was keeping himself busy looking through the books,
looking for instances Buffy would need to be aware of. He had
decided to read the Codex cover to cover, even though he'd
already read it word by word he read about the slayers battle
with The Master.
Making a point of it the pay special attention to it he kept going
even though his initial memories were not ones he'd normally
care to revisit. So he made notes of anything that may be of
use to Buffy in the future. He had finished that part, without
incidence.
Deciding to make himself a pot of tea, he waited until the kettle
had boiled. It seemed to be taking forever. Smiling to himself as
he remembered the old adage, about how a watched kettle
never boils. He laughed to himself and went to stand, leaning
against the doorframe.
"Just a minute!" he exclaimed. He rushed to the Codex, locating
the passage about The Master, he read what was written again.
"Willow? are you there?" asked Giles waiting for her reply.
"Willow!"
"Be there in a sec," she replied.
Walking into the room, "What is it?"
"There is something in this passage. Can you copy it onto the
computer? I may need to change it."
"What? that is the Codex, why would you want to change what
is written? Which bit do you mean?" asked Willow.
Giles moved to the side, just enough for Willow to see the
passage he meant.
"What is it? That seems straight forward to me."
"You can read it?"
"No, it's in ancient Greek, they don't teach it here," said Willow.
"What I thought it was, was wrong. I read it as, The master
shall rise and the slayer, well I won't go into that again. The
thing I just realised was I had translated it wrong."
"What I missed was that the passage was about another deity
in hell, then the passage should have been read as The Master
was doing the bidding of another so The Master shall rise and he
shall kill the slayer means about the Master, but it is about
another," said Giles.
Willow listened intently to what was said then glanced at Giles.
"I still don't see it."
"Then you are listening wrong, it isn't what is written, it is what
is meant. The chapter being about this other deity," stated Giles
"What?"
"The word, shall," he opens a dictionary, "Now read the second
usage meaning." Willow did as he said, reading the dictionary.
"Used in second or third person subjects, in promises or
statements of intention or obligation."
"Now read the third meaning," said Giles.
"Sometimes the word "˜shall' is used in questions with words
other than "˜I' or "˜we' because "˜will' would sound like a request."
Willow's mind raced, thoughts flashing. "The Master shall kill,
but in regard for him." She stared at Giles, "Or for him! But that
would mean, oh!"
"It might mean more," stated Giles, "Get Buffy here, now!"
Willow grabbed her bag as she ran to the door, opening it she
flew past Tara, only stopping at the curb. Deciding which way
to go she looked to the right. Not seeing Buffy, Willow was
about to go to the left when Xander pulled up in his car.
Willow, wrenching open the car door.
"Where is Buffy? we need her here."
"She's near her house, I just left her there," replied Xander.
"We need, to get her here, now!"
"Alright Will, but she wanted to walk."
Getting into his car
"Get Buffy, now!" ordered Willow, "Turn!"
Xander suddenly moved back from the controls as his car burst
into life.
Turning to face the other way, tyres screeching, small clouds of
smoke rising from the back of the car.
He looked to Willow, seeing a side of her he had never seen.
"Where was Willow going in such a rush?" asked Tara.
"Gone to get Buffy, I was reading through the Codex, I saw
something I've read before, only this time I saw it differently, I
had translated it with the wrong intension, but now it has a new
meaning." "What is that Mr. Giles?" asked Tara.
"I'd prefer to wait until Buffy gets here."
Tara grins for her own benefit, as Giles began to stare at the
words.
"I'll get a drink, what do you want?" she asked, but she wasn't
given a reply."
It was ten minutes before Buffy, Xander and Willow came into
the room. Giles looked up to her.
"These two were full of something coming here, what is it?"
"I was reading through the Codex, I saw something I hadn't seen
before."
"And that was?" asked Buffy.
"It was the account of you facing The Master, it stated he shall
kill the slayer."
"That didn't work out to well, did it," said Buffy.
"Actually it may have been right. When we met in England,
remember? while you were dead," said Giles.
"Right, that train of thought from the Priory of Sion."
"That's right Buffy, so picture this. The Master wasn't out to
get you for his own pleasure."
"Wait up Giles," said Xander, "The Master wanted to kill the
slayer so that he could enter the world."
"That is what happened, but maybe his being in the world was
just the spoils of war. If The Master was doing what someone
else wanted, what would that other say?" asked Giles, "Willow?"
"A first persons intentions might be said as I shall, but a second
or third person would say he shall. I would expect it to be he will."
"So?" asked Xander
"So although this other wanted me dead, there was nothing
about me dying, "˜shall' could have been used as from a fourth
persons aspect," said Buffy.
"Then, maybe I am not the chosen one," she added.
"Or that could have been read as you were chosen, but that you
were chosen to be the chosen," said Willow.
"If you were chosen to be chosen, that would give it a new
meaning, when was the codex written Mr. Giles?" asked Buffy.
"There are references in the codex to other slayers that may
have lived a thousand years ago."
"Should the book have been written before that, it could be a
reference of what will happen."
"What does it say on the last few pages of the book?" asked
Xander.
"It goes on about an Evil Alpha and a divinely magical pendant,"
Giles thought about what that could mean, "That would seem
that a divine power either will given you, or it will be given to
others who will give you this magical pendant."
"Giles, a magical pendant is an amulet," stated Willow.
"And Alpha is just a Greek letter," said Tara.
"Is there anything after that entry in the book, if not, then it
would indicate that Buffy could lose," said Xander.
Willow picked up the Codex, reading the last pages.
t doesn't say that Buffy loses, or mentions anything about her
death come to that."
"So reading between the lines," added Tara, "If there is nothing
said, then it may not be their chosen one that dies. It could be
this evil alpha that dies. Oh, of the Greek letters, it is the first
one, the First."
"What would be at the end?" asked Xander

"It could be a continuing life?"
