ILLYRIAN
Druish Pervonian Wizard
DISCLAIMER: I do this as a matter of courtesy, that Joss
Whedon created the names for the series Buffy The Vampire
Slayer. Several times I have pretended it was based on truth,
never did I really consider that the story was indeed based on
fact.
My story was to be set just after Buffy Willow and horny Anya
( I don’t mean horny as a demon might be.) saw Xander fall into
the mission.
So there I was, doing research for a piece of fan-fic I thought of
writing another for the Tales of the Slayer. I started by trying to
find the year that the Spanish inhabited the land where Sunnydale
could have been, thinking it was just another story, false, an
invented name, about an invented person, never for one instance
thinking it was based on truth. What I found, it caused me to
rethink my beliefs.
I remembered in the episode Pangs about a priest. Angel told
Giles that the priests ancestors came from those times. It
was while pinpointing a year for my story that I followed a link
to the Archbishop Juan de Zumarraga, from there to a Alfonso
de las Casas of the Spanish city Madrid, his writings included
a section about a cousin of Bartolome de las Casas. That cousin,
Gregor (not the proper name but I don’t like the Spanish version
of that name) anyway this Gregor had witnessed that in the
year fifteen hundred and two a young squaw had risen from the
ranks of the other squaws in her tribe.
This squaw did not lead a tribe but she was spoken of, as she
possessed great strength. Gregor wrote of the medicine men of
the Chumash, The Cherokee and The Apache who travelled from
their lands to learn how a simple squaw could heal overnight. Of
how she was told to live near by but not with them.
This is where my mind went into overdrive as that squaw, that
Indian squaw set her teepee (or tepee) in a land surrounded
by hills, from her tepee appeared a light that lit those lands at
night, so I searched the maps finding that that area in modern
times. From the description of where her tepee was sited that is
where the school is. Considering it to be a massive coincidence I
was a bit curious, then it hit me, it hit me hard. Land surrounded
by hills? that is a valley. How-ever, with a light illuminating the
area day and night, could that be known as sunny? Valley =
vale = dale = Sunnydale?
Sitting back, looking at what was written. Thinking that I must
be seeing truths in the fictional story, where in fact only tales
of what was, was written. I then read the last three lines which
were about Gregor, how he mentioned of The rulers of Ottoman
wanting what was Constantinople reborn. That set the alarm
bells ringing big time, as I knew that was about the country
Turkey, after Constantinople the city was renamed Istanbul,
yet before being Constantinople the place was known as
Byzantium.
Oh - My - God!!
Wanting to confirm my thoughts I ran an internet search for
the Chumash Indians and yes they did exist, at the time that
the Spanish invaded America. All those things the spirit of the
Chumash said happened to them, it did happen! Also some-one
did speak up to try and save the Chumash Indians, Bartolome
De las Casas.
