Another short ficlet.
Buffy POV.
Set after the school blows up in Graduation.
Season 4? Never happened.

I don’t have to tell you that my graduation day was a blur to me. You know it already, because you saw what came before it, but it pains me that you weren’t there for it, standing next to me in that burgundy cap and gown. But I think that you need to hear what became of it, even though you might not want to. It was a blur, a whirl of colors and fighting and wonderfully painful goodbyes. There were many goodbyes there. Too many. Someone else will have to fill you in on the boring details; my mind was on other things during the ceremony. But still, I remember bits and pieces, like blowing up the school and Giles handing me my diploma. I have that laminated and tucked away somewhere. I honestly never thought a piece of paper could ever mean so much to me, but it does.

But the rest of that day, and those before, are a little foggy. Maybe that’s because everything changed that day. And I do mean everything, right down to my last name. I don’t remember much of what happened that day, but I do remember one thing, with such clarity, that I swear that it happened just yesterday.

My Angel stood before me, looking at me with those beautiful endlessly chocolate brown eyes, for a moment that lasted years. I knew what was coming, knew that he was going to turn away and walk out of my life. I knew that it would rip my heart in two and that I would never be the same. Love would never be the same, and I think that you, of all people, can understand why. You’ve been through something much like this haven’t you? You’ve seen so many people you care about walk away from you that you stopped caring. Stopped being what I saw deep inside really made you, you. I’m not sure that I would have survived losing two people I care about that night, because whether or not you believe it, I care about you. I care about you so much.

When he did it, when he turned right around and walked away, I felt tears sting my eyes but I couldn’t cry then. Not right then, with all those people surrounding me. I save my tears for 2 a.m. when I can’t sleep, slay, or do this. I’ll never forget when you showed me how to do this. It was all you had to give me. I should have known that and told you how touched I was that you shared it with me. Me, but it made sense. I was the only one like you.

Angel and I had this conversation. We had it that night when someone shot an arrow through his chest, poisoning him. We had it again after I sacrificed myself to save him. So I knew he was going to leave. I wasn’t expecting a goodbye. And I wasn’t expecting for my feet to carry me to him. How they managed to support me as I ran toward him I don’t know. And never will. You see, I decided in the thirty seconds that passed between our eyes that I wasn’t going to let him leave. He was much too important and our love was far too strong. So I ran after him, pushed him into a wall, and kissed him. I remember feeling his shoulders sag in relief, as if every step he had taken away from me was killing him as it was killing me. I never will forget how he got down one knee and proposed, pulling the ring from his pocket and slipping it on my finger when I said yes.

He didn’t really leave me. And I have never really left you. Faith, it’s been four years since that day and I have written letter after letter to you, trying to show you that as soon as you wake up from that coma I will be right here, trying to make you understand that I love you. I honestly love you. And if you give me the chance, I’ll spend my life making yours up to you. I want to give you all those things you never had. A mother, a sister, a puppy, and someone who will love you for you. No questions. Faith, come back to me.

For forever and a day,

Buffy
