Episode Discussion 1.01 "Ghost" - Aired 2/13/09 (FOX-US)

Oh yes! I forgot to say how badass Sierra was. I said something out loud when she burst in to the effect of "Holy crap!" or possibly "She kicks ass!"

Oh also! After watching it, I'm wondering if Joss got the idea for this show by watching that Futurama episode where Fry downloads Lucy Liu into a robot lol!

It's kind of silly that they're playing episode two as episode four and episode three as episode two, but I'm just glad that it's airing!
 
It was a really good first episode.

Can't say that I immediately got hooked as I did with Buffy and Firefly though.

Still, I'm looking forward to the next episode. It sure got lots of potiental.
There is some great stories to be told here, that I'm sure of.

Anyway, I just saw it and I freakin liked it a whole lot ! I was so so so so so happy to see Amy back on screen (even though I saw her six months ago on Private Practice... it was a long time ago !), she's amazing, beautiful, even when scarred. Eliza was pretty good but not perfect, though Nerd4Hire has a great point. It seriously lacks man candy. It's full of mystery, and, it's true, very Angel-like.

I want moooore and I love that the episode was so much longer than a regular TV show episode, I hope it'll give other networks some ideas. I mean, Grey's Anatomy is only 42 minutes, Dollhouse was 49 (one act longer!!). In the Season 4 GA DVDs, there's a "full-length" episode, without all the cuts, and it was 49 minutes and damn enjoyable (besides, it was one of the best episodes of a (lousy) season but I'm rambling).

I can't wait to see more, it's so great there won't be pauses of many weeks like the other shows - let's just hope it doesn't get cancelled, but I'm optimistic !
 
No surprises here. I liked it. Not the "Oh my god the best show ever" feeling but something good enough to get my interest and keep it. Without a doubt something to look forward to every week. Even though it´s hard to truly know how I´d felt if it didn´t have Joss as a creator and Eliza in the leading role. I´m sure those facts are in my head "helping" me to love the show even if I´d love to know that I´m totally unbiased I really doubt that I am.
 
I really liked it, and I admit I got a little inner geek squee when Amy came on the screen (I love Amy Acker, haha) and this pilot made the show look really promising. There's so many different ways they could go and with each of the individual characters involved in the dollhouse (plus all the dolls themselves) there's so many stories to tell.

And while some may say that Eliza isn't acting much different from her her typical action-roles, I have to say that not once through that episode did I get a reminder of Faith or Tru etc which is good enough for me- and I could definitely see the differences in the personas she played. Acting differently from other personas isn't always obvious- sometimes it's more important for it to be unnoticeably subtle for it to be believeable.

Anyone else shocked by the ending? But then also said "It's Joss, what did I expect?"
 
I definitely thought I was watching a different show than the critics. I was ready to get disappointed but man, it was awesome and got me way more hooked than the first episodes of Buffy or Angel ever did.

Amy's character definitely seems to have a story behind her. Topher was looking straight at her when he was talking about running away from something. Also, did anyone else notice that she seemed to be kinda scared or wary of the dolls? She pulled back when echo was trying to touch her face and she acted pretty weirdly around her.
 
I really liked it. I also found it a little slow to start but now I wana see next weeks! Eliza does the 'erased' look really well hehe. Sierra was cool too, I was expecting her to be really crap cos she was on Neighbours. I hope she can keep up with the acting of the rest of the cast. I was impressed by Eliza too. So much to unfold!

I just watched this online (I have my sources 😉) and seriously, I'm in love.
Even after the first five minutes or so, I was hooked, my parents were calling me away from the computer, but I was to engrossed.
Eliza is SUCH an amazing actress, and that really really showed in this.
When I saw so many familair names and faces from other Joss works, I knew why it was so amazing. 🙂
If this first episode is anything to go by of what the rest of DH is gonna be like, I can't wait. It rocks.
 
I just finished watching it online as well 😉
I really did like it,not love not yet! but i will watch the next episode and i can see so many different episodes and loads of character development! Amy Ackers character already has me interested! lol
I also like how its shot reminds me of Angel season 5 🙂
Can't wait for next weeks episode!

i wouldnt necessarily say the critics got this show all wrong. most of the reviews i read said that the show was "ok" and that it has "potential for more."

i only disagree with that somewhat. an "ok" rating in my mind is a 6.7-7 out of 10. however, i give it an 8.5 out of 10. as far as first episodes go, it made me want to know the characters more and see what lies ahead in all of their pasts. oh yes, i believe EVERYONE has something dark in their pasts.

in summary, the first epi did much better than i hoped and i can not wait to see more.

andrew once said (in season 7 of buffy), "im bored, episode one bored." NOT THIS TIME ANDREW....HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Saw it and loved it. I wasn't too keen on the opening beacuse my wife, who had not heard anything about, it was very turned off by all the T&A sexy stuff. She was like...this is a whore house.

I told her Joss doesn't see women in that light, not his heroes...give it a chance; and that is just part of the possible setting which depended on the client. *wife rolls eyes*

Along came Mrs. Penn to save the day. By shows end my wife liked it (as allready stated, I loved it)

I got chills when after learning that the source of the imprint memory committed suicide, echo tells her 'abuser' the line he use to tell his victims about ghosts when confronting him. It took on a very well crafted double meaning.

The one thing I did not like was the FBI agent, he seems too overtly rambo. I would have liked to see someone more like the retired field agent in Taken. Smart and dangerous.

Obviously who ever penned that part of the script has no idea on how busy club/pub bathrooms are - least the ones I've been in (I don't think it's a good place for an information shake down and a bad reflection on the agents common sense...maybe that plays into his character more as a loose cannon though- seemed 'leathal weapon' enough.)

Anyway, that moment just did not work for me.

I also wish he was more handsome. There are so many beautiful women in that show, it would have been nice if they gave my wife some eyecandy to look at too.

It is my wife and my's consensus that he looks like a more built version of David letterman mixed with Dick York from 'Bewitched' He's by no means ugly, but I would not call him handsome either. I'm just not fond of him, yet anyway. (In his defense he really didn't have to much of a role and his introduction sort of seemed forced.)


Overall, I'm excited. A very different feel than Buffy, but a sim. theme of a girl trying to find her role.

Awesome.

I'm liking it so far.

Lots started happening after the first quater of the episode and started hinting at all the different plots and subplots that could emerge throughout the season.

Of the characters introduced so far I'm liking Echo and her personalities so far, apart form that Sierra seems like she will become integral to the story.

The show seems to me like it could go places which hope it does if it continues pleasing me.
 
The motorbikes worried me. I wasn't impressed. Along with all the criticism we'd heard, it wasn't good.


Then the episode started. It was very enjoyable. And, I'm kind of gladly surprised that everyone else here seems to think so. I was expecting backlash. But, then again, I wasn't expecting the episode to set up the mythology quite as much. The reviews made it sound very stand-alone.

Amy Acker was great. I really liked that she was playing a much older, more mature character than Fred ever seemed. She was actually strangely like Illyria in her stand-offishness, but not in a way that was distracting or anything.

And Eliza? Well, I never did get the criticisms of her acting ability. Then again, I never saw her films. But Faith was great. Tru never made me think I was watching Faith. Tru was great. And now Echo never made me think I was watching Tru or Faith. I think she'll cope.
 
Loved it..loved it and did i mention i LOVED IT!!

I just finished watching it online not that long ago and it was even better then i expected (and lets just say i had some high expectations.) I love how Eliza plays the character and for a first episode of the first season it was brilliantly done...alot of first episodes can be quite dull because they have to introduce the characters and set the scene but not Dollhouse. I loved the story line and how it introduced the fact that these "copies" of other people don't just come with their good parts...they may also have the bad psychological or emotional scars from the original person.

So yeah i rate it very highly and i think in future episodes i am mostly looking forward to the development of Amy Ackers character...i'm liking that it's different and more mature then fred (although you can still see a couple of fred-isms). Can't wait for the second episode now 😀

And that subtle humour amused me to no end!

Yep, very much enjoyed watching it. As a pilot, it kept my interested as to see what's going to happen next. Eliza did a great job, as I was worried about how she would maintain that sort of vulnerability, but I think she handled it well.

The little teaser to the underlying, overarching plot of the show (shoot me for that, I can't decide which I should call it), the possible glitches and tying them all in and still completing the stand alone plot of the ep....oh I want to know what happens next week!

Are you serious? The girl looked extremely familiar to Sierra.. but I kept turning on my iPod during the 60-90 second commercials that they threw out... I definitely could have been mistaken. Wait, was the girl with Eliza during the promoish interviews (in the commercials) the girl from the other new show? Haha, oopsie. xD

I am glad that Fox actually gave Dollhouse limited commercial interruption, maybe they'll do it everyweek? Lol, now who is hoping for the impossible and yeah, I smiled when the Mutant Enemy logo premiered at the end. I never actually saw the Logo on a new episode of anything Whedon-related, I was too young. I only saw it on FX repeats, so I was like YAY! 😀

Another thing I liked was how there's no clearly-defined mustache-twirling villain here. All of the people running the Dollhouse seem to have some moral disquiet, to one degree or another, about what they're doing.
