We're up to "Expecting" in season one of Angel. Time to discuss this episode!

So, what's up with Cordelia and mystical pregnancies anyways? 🙂

wow - a day. The rules for this 'experiment' really are strict!!!
This is one of the episodes that I alluded to in a previous discussion regarding the erratic nature of the first season. In fact, this is a prime example. Joss has often said the best thing to keep the viewers interested (in the early episodes of Buffy) was to put Willow in danger. I think Joss tried the same approach here, and while I do not claim to speak for the majority, I was rather indifferent to Cordelia. That being said, before the pregnancy occurred there were some funny moments.. Wesley with his ax stuck in the wall, the entrails on his shoulder, the termite hunting. All in all it was a rather forgettable episode.
 
Maybe she's a mystical demon pregnancy magnet. 😀

I think the major question I've heard about this episode is: was this Cordelia's first time? There's indications both ways. What do you all think?
 
Okay.. I wont say my first response was 'first time being pregnant?' but.. I have heard it both ways before as well. No, I do not believe it was her first time. I think her first time was with some cabana boy in a far away vacation spot, on a beach... etc etc Which is why she got upset that the one vacation there was not a beach anywhere around.
 
I think it was absolutely her first pregnancy, mystical or otherwise. But was it her first sexual encounter beyond some groping in the broom closet?

I'm not sure she'd lower herself to do more than flirt with a cabana boy, though.

Ah! but you forget.. it was okay to make out with Xander as long as no one knew about it... now this cabana boy could be another country so.. I think they coined the drink 'sex on the beach' after Cordy. He would have to be a buff cabana boy, though; maybe with a Miata.
 
It´s not my fav episode... The central arc, the danger and all, was kinda creepy.

What I really liked was Cordy and Wes at the doctor saying they´re a couple from England, it was funny; Cordy drinking blood (ok, very creepy, but it was cool 😀) and Dennis! Oh, I love Dennis, he´s the best ghost ever!

And the thing about being the first time for Cordelia is long discussed... I think she wasn´t a virgin at all when she gets pregnant, she says something on Buffy about it.
 
The story she tells in "Bad Eggs" ("I have a friend, not me, who was doing it in the back of a car and she kicked the gearshift. . . .") is one reason I think she may have already had sex before. Though people have often wondered why she didn't with Xander. Don't know. :shrug:

That´s what I was talking about! o/ And maybe Xander was too cute, don´t know.
This epy was like a prelude to season four. Her body used as a vessel for some parasitic demon to use for it's offsspring or to be born from. Kinda like the prog I saw last night, with the wasps using a catterpiller as a host, the idea sporned the Alien films. I would of thought the first time round would of made warning bells ring for the next time!
 
This episode kinda gets lost on me. I alwayss forget about it. It's not got the best plot (I didn't even care for the plot in S4) and everyone was kinda out of character, including Cordelia before the being-pregnant. I'm not going to sit here and say that I think Cordy's a saint and that it was her first time or anything, but something about Cordy sleeping with a guy on the first date when she never slept with Xander at all during their year-long relationship just screms 'Not right' to me.

One thing that does really hit the mark with me about this ep, is when Cordy asks Angel if it's her fault, if she's being punished for what she did in Sunnydale. This, for me, is the start of the turning point for Cordy.

Oh please. He was every guy that she ever wanted to bed; he represented the whole reason she went to LA in the first place. He was rich and successful, plus gave her the line about being all lost and confused like her. Of course she would have slept with him on the first date.
 
Oh, gosh when Wesley gets that ax stuck in the wall, it just kills me! I love goofy Wesley (Well, I love all Wesley's)

It's hard to say whether or not we think that Cordelia has had sexual experience before. She didn't seem very upset with the whole "I had sex" thing, just the consequence of that action. And she talked about how it was all very 'safe', so seems like she knew enough that it wasn't her first time.

It doesn´t change anything... I think it´s pretty skanky what she did, first time or not :S

And yeah, the british goofy Wesley is great to watch!
 
I think Cordy slept with the guy on the first dat because she felt a connection with him, and she was kinda having a rough time in LA, it wasn't living up to her expectations.

It's such a freaky, but great, episode. When Cordelia wakes up with a giant pregnant belly, Angel and Wesley's reaction. Wesley at the hospital with Cordelia, great great great.
 
And I thought the monster was incredibly lame for Angel. I mean, really! Make something alittle believable.
 
^ They discussed that in the special features. They said they had the hardest time filming that scene because it looked so awful and half the time it wasn't even in the shot with Wesley; they used a miniature. XD

I recall that.. just dont know why they needed a GIANT in the first place.
That monster truly was awful. That has to be one of the worst effects in the 'verse, ever. I can't think of ANYTHING that looked worse than that. The best ones are always the simplest, like the time you didn't even see the demon. (And Anya's teleporting in S6. Had to get that in there when talking about good effects!)

Overall though? I really liked this episode. I, personally, like that Joss didn't actually overuse the "put Cordelia in danger" card, like he may have done with Willow. AH could certainly pull it off, but it begins to lose its effect when it's overdone. The few times that Cordy was in danger though - and I mean really in danger, mentally as well as physically - always hit the right note with me. Like Lyri said, the line where she asks if it's her fault was perfect.

And the blood. Seriously, that just came out of nowhere, and left me in stitches for about ten minutes!

I havent seen it in since forever.. what about the blood? you mean at the doctors office when it goes all Alien and eats thru the floor?? or

No, when the guys walk into the kitchen to see her grab a pitcher of blood from the sink and down it in one, before going back to bed!
Could you imagine if you amnio fluid just ate through the floor? That would be totally freaksome!
