We will be tackling a different season every other day, so let's get started with Season 1 of Angel, which originally aired on October 5, 1999!

Post your thoughts, memories, and feelings about Season 1 here!

New town. New show. It showed us that it's completely different show from BtVS.

My first episode of season 1 that I watched was Sanctuary, which got me hook and lead me to BtVS(Yes, I watched Ats before BtVS). So thank you ANGEL the series for that.

My favorites episodes has to be Sanctuary because I'm a big fan of Faith and Buffy. I also love In The Dark, RM W/A VU, Hero, Parting Gifts, The Ring, Five By Five, War Zone, Blind Date and of course, To Shanshu in L.A. 🙂

I got to know new awesome characters like Doyle, Kate Lockley and Charles Gunn. And new enemy that I didn't expect like Wolfram & Hart.

And I always wanted to go to L.A. So overall, this is so cool!

Wow, I really can't believe that Ats started ten years ago. I guess because we are all still so close to both shows we forget that on some level they're over. 🙁

I can quite vividly remember Ats starting. I was devastated that Angel left Sunnydale, absolutely heartbroken and I think I almost kind of resented their being a new Angel show that really meant he wasn't going back. (I was young remember 😛). I can remember it first being aired in the UK on Channel 4, I believe, but I have feeling it was on quite late. One of my older brothers friends was a Buffy and Angel fan and it was him who lent me series one on boxset. Strangely, since rewatching Angel over the last few months, I remembered so little about the first season. One thing I can remember is how absolutely heartbreaking IWRY and Hero were. From the first time I watched it at around 10/11 to now when I'm 20, it still has me blubbing like a baby.

The first series of Angel was one that I always loved. I thought it was still quite Buffy-like at this time, and a large part of it went over my head, but rewatching now I am older, I am in love with it.

I think, deep down, season 1 will always be my favourite. Doyle is my absolute favourite character on the show and I also think that Season one was a turning point for all the characters, and even some of those from BtVS.

🙂

Well back from the early Buffy seasons, Cordy and Angel were my favourite characters. Needless to say I totally digged the show that has them as major characters with most screen time! Actually, I didn't watch Angel until long after I was done with Buffy, but that was actually the reason why I started watching it, the Cordyness.
Well, and then Wesley joined the team. I didn't really like him too much on Buffy (well...duh), but with his role on Angel he increasingly grew on me.

What is really cool is that s1 already featured Wolfram & Hart. There you finally have a real big bad, as in, is around constantly, but can't just be easliy smacked down like all the Buffy villains. Also, Lindsey and Lilah, great bad guys.

At first I refused to watch Angel because Angel left BTVS. I think Angel was on really late here but I didn't watch a single episode. Then about three or four years ago a friend lent me his entire series, and well I was hooked. My favourite episode would have to be the one where Spike comes to LA and Room W A Vu.

And we get cool villains like Lindsey and Lilah.

Doyle was ok, but he was too short lived for me to get attached.

Honestly, the first season of Angel was pretty... not that great. While it may be more Buffy-like than the other seasons, Angel was its own show, and needed to branch out from Sunnydale.

Cordelia was my second favorite character on Buffy, and became my favorite character on Angel. I was in love with Lilah from the moment she stepped on screen, and I could actually tolerate Lindsey in the first season. 😛

The first time I ever saw Angel season 1 was back on channel 4 (I think) and just thought WTF is this? Then got the box sets through my mum loving the show and the rest was history.

Favourite moments of season 1 are:

Doyle being remembered as a true hero (even though his death was horrible to watch)

Cordy getting the visions and starting to become more down to earth.

Wesley and Angels dancing at Cordy's party. No more needs to be said.

Phantom Dennis finally being released from his prison in the wall!

Faith arriving in to town and breaking down in the alley begging to be killed before realising she had to go to prison to pay for her crimes. Powerful stuff.

Lindsay getting his hand cut off.

Darla being bought back from hell.

That's all I can think of for now, I'll probably be back with more later on haha!

I enjoyed when it was simpler, running things out of a home office rather than a giant hotel or an evil law firm.
I really loved this season, not as much as 3, though. I was really sad to see a main character get killed off so quickly.
My favorite moments are:
Angel saving Cordelia from the W&H guy in City Of.
Faith crying in the alley, begging to be killed.
Buffy's and Angel's last minute in IWRY.
Angel telling the oracles he wants to be a vampire again.
And who doesn't love rogue demon hunter Wesley?
Just to name a few.
I enjoy seeing everyone change from the beginning to season 5.

For a long time I wasn't willing to give Angel (the series) a chance. I was a huge fan of BtVS but I never found Angel's character that interesting. As a couple, Buffy and Angel completely bored me. It got to the point where I wanted to fast forward through their scenes together. I've since then become much more tolerant and appreciative of their beginning relationship but Angel's character on Buffy still doesn't do much for me. Angelus on the other hand, is a different story. The minute he turned evil I began to enjoy him so much more. Learning his backstory and seeing him play mind games with everyone around him was so much more captivating than seeing him follow Buffy around like a little lost puppy and popping up in her bedroom like a big creep all the time. Needless to say, I wasn't terribly disappointed to see him go after season 3.

I started really getting into Buffy after it and Angel had already been off the air and wasn't familiar with any of Joss' other shows. Friends of mine that were also into Buffy told me Angel was very good and I should give it a chance. All I knew about it was Cordelia and Wesley co-starred and Spike came back in season 5 and for that reason alone I was very tempted to just watch season 5 by itself. I couldn't stand Cordelia but for some reason I really liked Wesley. I know I'm in the minority of people who actually liked him in Buffy, but I liked how stuffy and lame he was. Especially with how badass he made Giles look by comparison.

So I got a bunch of cash for my birthday this year and decided to just buy the whole box set online and hope for the best. My initial reservations about the show were proven unfounded within the first episode. I was worried that the writing wouldn't be as good, they had run out of interesting stories, the other cast members would suck, it would be too much like Buffy, it wouldn't be enough like Buffy - a myriad of reasons and I didn't want to waste my time or money. I'm very glad I did though cause with the exception of a few complaints (the typical ones), I think Angel is every bit as good and often times better than Buffy. I became quite fond of Cordelia, liked Wesley more and more, and enjoyed Angel's character about 150% more than originally on Buffy.

I've only watched the series all the way through once so I don't remember a lot of little details, but the only problem I remember having with season 1 is Doyle. I loved Doyle but I knew right from the start he was going to die. Not cause of spoilers on the internet, but cause of an audio commentary done by Joss for one of the early Buffy episodes. He said that he originally wanted to put Jesse's character in the opening credits to throw off the fans and make his death more shocking, but in retrospect he's glad he didn't cause he ended up doing that with a character in Angel and fans were extremely upset. Since the main characters in Angel season 1 were just Angel, Cordy, and Doyle - and I knew Cordy was in later seasons - simple deduction proves that Doyle wasn't going to be around for very long. So during each episode I was constantly wondering when they were gonna kill him off and that was pretty annoying. Other than that, I thought season 1 was great and it got me completely hooked. I ended up finishing the entire series in just a few weeks and I'm planning on doing a complete rewatch very soon.

Season 1 wasn't the best, but it was pretty good, IMO! I loved Doyle, and was sad to see him go. Wesley was funny, but just not a good enough replacement for him in Season 1! I only started to like Wes later on. and Cordy was hilarious, too! And Kate and the perfect introduction to W&H; they were in the frickin' "Pilot"! I loved all of that. My favorites were "Room w/a Vu", "Somnambulist", "Five by Five", "Sanctuary", "Blind Date", and "To Shanshu In L.A." Unlike most, I really enjoyed watching this season. It wasn't the best, near the worst, but it was very enjoyable!

I love Season 1. I remember seeing "City Of" and being surprised at how much darker and sexier "Angel" was... I loved it!! I had heard the rumors of how Charisma was going over to "Angel" and kept wondering how she was going to work against David's serious portrayal of Angel and was sooo pleasantly shocked; she was exactly the ray of sunshine the show needed to keep it from being too serious. I loved Doyle from the beginning, and was soooo sad when he was killed off (even though it was done in the best way possible, and it did let us get Wesley back in the Buffyverse). I was happy when Wesley was brought in to replace him, and I think the dynamic between the characters was incredible.
Overall, the season is really good, especially for being a first season in a series. I think they did an awesome job of establishing the new life in L.A for all of us who were diehard Buffy fans, and they also did a great job of integrating with/explaining the connection with BtVS.
Some favorite moments:
Cordelia- "Oh, you don't know who he is, do you? Oh boy, you're about to get your ass kicked!" LOL
Oz's appearance in "In The Dark". I was SO hoping he'd end up coming back after leaving Willow in Sunnydale, 'cause this crossover ROCKED. How cool did he look holding that crossbow out the van door?!
Angel getting to walk in the sun in "In The Dark". That moment was beautiful... I was heartbroken when he crushed the gem! 🙁
"I Fall To Pieces" is one of the creepiest and best eps of the season!
Cordelia getting her awesome apartment and the introduction of Phantom Dennis. 😀
"I Will Remember You". OMG, what can I say?? The single most heartbreaking moment in the Buffyverse for me back in the day... This is one of the best of the entire series.
"Hero"... The death of Doyle right after the Buffy crossover event? Joss Whedon, why do you hate me?? I was happy that Doyle went out in a literal blaze of glory, but I was devestated that he left. 🙁
Cordelia getting Doyle's visions was just AWESOME... And the introduction of Wesley made me so happy, 'cause I always loved his character...
Angel and Wesley being overprotective of Cordelia like big brothers was adorable. 🙂
Angel and Wesley dancing? Absolutely HYSTERICAL. OMG.
"I've Got You Under My Skin" is probably my favorite episode from S1... This episode was genuinely creepy, and we got to get some deep looks into the characters to learn about valuable points in the character's histories, such as Wesley's abuse at the hands of his father, and Angel blaming himself for Doyle's death.
"Eternity" is also one of my faves... And we got to see Angelus for a few minutes, so BONUS. And how AWESOME was Cordelia bluffing with him about the holy water in the bottle? 😉
Faith's arrival into L.A.... BRILLIANT. Eliza and David have a magnetic chemistry to them... These two eps show that, no question.
I loved how the overall big bad of the show was made to be a law firm. LMFAO I still say this was Joss and co. saying "Stick it to the man!" LOL 😉 I loved Lindsey from day 1... I was so hoping he'd come over to the side of good but alas...

So these are my favorite things about S1. 😀 And I STILL am freaking out that it's been 10 years; I feel majorly old.

Cordelia bluffing with him about the holy water in the bottle? 😉

Oh, that's my favorite quotes of Cordelia's. 😀

And I also love when she was in an audition for a commercial and suddenly got her first vision. I laughed my ass out even I know she's in pain. Bad me. 😛

Season one was good, i loved it just being the three of them 🙂

Although sad when they killed off Doyle..

but brilliant idea of bringing Cordy back , and giving her visions..
It was brilliant for all the btvs fans to get more out of Buffy,
AN ANGEL

I don't think i got into angel until Btvs finished,, my friend kept on saying to me 'You better watch it!'
but i was still crazed about Buffy at the time, and i never really Loved Angel in Buffy, i was all for Spike at the time.
When i started watching Angel, i started to realize how great his character really was, how lovable he was.
Then my whole Spuffy ship went down the drain. Especially when i saw IWRY, oh god saddest Bangel episode eva! ;'(

I Love how they brought in charcters from buffy who weren't really 'main' characters..

Like Cordy, Wesley, Darla, Harmony
You got to see the other side to them, and in more detail..

I Loved how they went into more depth with Darla, i loved the Darla+angel arc 🙂

It was nice to see how Great Julie Benz was, as an actress, as she was barely in Btvs.
Other Lovable characters.......

Gunn, i think he is wayyyy underrated. I really Loved the whole Frunn ship. I though they made such a perfect couple, pity he had to kill that guy :/

Wesley, at first , never really appealed to me, i dunno but i never really enjoyed his character in Angel as much as i do now.
He is hilarious though :')
Plus the Fresley thing is so sad.
I always thought Frunn were a better couple, until recently.

and Lorne who could forget Lorne!
Who doesn't love Lorne?!
He's green, he sings karaoke, he's a big lovable demon 🙂
( ha i forgot this was just mainly about s1)
ohwell 🙂
( and sorry if none of that made any sense, as i'm about to fall asleepp )

I agree, Gunns a superb character and way underrated.
I loved s1, quite easily the best season of Ats. The simplicity of it was great, the main team was much closer and i liked Cordy + Wes more back then. really liked the office they worked from too.
It also felt more connected to Btvs with all the amazing guest stars on it, my favorite being Spike starring in In the dark.
To me almost every episode(like 20out of 22) was great. Legend of a season

oh i loved season 1. I can remember how excited my mum and I were for the show. We had watched Buffy since the beginning, so it was just one more chance for us to see some of our favorite characters.

I dont remember much from first watching it. I didnt think much of Doyle until I bought the seasons on DVD and realized what a great character he was.

This season was so light-hearted. Not always... but when it was, it was so much fun. Especially Wesley... aww man, to see how his character changed from beginning to end is absolutely incredible. Im so glad they brought him on.

Some great episodes!! I'm going to go watch some now!

One of my ultimate favourite moments was from 'In the Dark', Spike doing his commentary at the very beginning of the episode when he was watching Angel from the rooftop. Had me in stiches!

Oh and when they were talking about Buffy;

Spike: She is cute when she's hurting.
Angel: She's cuter when she's kicking your ass.

Heh.

LOL I love the rooftop scene! <3
I had viewed the entirety of BTVS before I picked up Angel... ended up buying ATS without any knowledge of it other then having watched BTVS on an Amazon Gold Deal. The first season of Angel was a breath of fresh air when compared to the Buffy S7 (which I had only finished a month ago or so). It was the most 'Buffy' of the seasons, and the camaraderie between Cordy, Angel, Doyle/Wes was a lot of fun to watch.

My favorite moment is definitely the end of 5x5 when Angel tells the Buffster to take a hike and claims his show for himself.
