10 Days of Angel Day 6: Characters

Well, in my opinion it's the obvious answer...and that would be Angel but of course. This is based soley on if there was no Angel well there would be no...Angel. Angel is the vampire with a soul. A character full of darkness who doesn't want to believe in the darkness any longer but can never really part from it.... because it will always be a part of him. He fights evil to save the world and to save the one he loves. The one he can never really be with. He fights for redemption and for what is right while he suffers silently, tortured by the ones he killed. It doesn't hurt that he's completely hot and mysterious. There are supporting actors with their own stories and there own wills to fight....but there is only one Angel. One Angelus. One character with the strength to carry on a never ending battle to fight the forcess of darkness....besides Buffy of course. And he is her counterpart. But Angel is the real star of this show.
 
Yeah, it's Angel, obviously. He's the champion. He's the reason everyone gathered together to be a team. But I have to mention Doyle because he's the one who told him to start the 'business'. 🙂 Cordy and Wesley come close in second. It doesn't mean that Gunn, Fred and Lorne didn't important. They all prooved that they're good team that not helped only the helpless, but they also helped each other. But overall, Angel, Wes and Cordy made the show. 🙂
 
Well after Angel I would choose Doyle. He helped bring people together and gave his "gift" to Cordy and the rest is history so to speak.

With apologies to the Champion and his Brain, the most important character in Angel is Ms. Cordelia Chase. Not S4 'under control of a higher power' Cordy but S1-S3 and You're Welcome Cordy.

Think about it, Cordelia was the reason why Angel Investigations did what it did. Not only the obvious 'She has the visions' thing but much more, she is the inspiration for Angel to fight the good fight every time he goes to his dark place. In early season 1 a very important conversation happens between Wes and Cordelia:

Wesley: "What connects us to life is the simple truth that we are part of it. We live, we grow, we change. But Angel..."

Cordy: "Can't do any of those things. Well, what are you saying, Wesley? That Angel has nothing to look forward to? That he going to go on forever, in the world, but always cut off from it?"

Wesley: "Yes."

Cordy: "Well, that sucks! We've got to do something. We've got to help him."

Wesley: "I'm not sure we can."

Cordy: "What is your deal? You go around boring everyone with your musty scrolls and then you say there is nothing we can do?"

Wesley: "He is what he is."

Cordy: "He's Angel. He's good. And he helps the helpless and now he's one of them. Well, he's gonna have to start wanting things from life, whether he wants to or not!"

A mission statement from a beautiful woman who will live her goal until she dies. If you look back on the series her absence is an oft explored theme and Angel (and others) always do worse when she's absent, not only that but his need for her always brings him back. Not only that but W&H understand this as well, a few examples:

- The Big Bad at the end of S1 puts Cordy in the hospital to cut Angel off.

- When Angel goes 'off the reservation' and starts letting lawyers die, he comes back to protect Cordy from the eyeball demons.

- Think about it, when Wes finally decides to take Connor who ISN'T there? Wes AND Angel were both rudderless without her and it led to them both making terrible decisions that ruined their friendship for years.

- 'That Vision Thing' Lilah goes after Angels heart.

- 'Birthday' need I say more?

- Finally, 'You're Welcome' after Team Angel get completely lost in W&H who brings them back to their original mission? Which one person shows Angel what his original purpose was?


Without Wesley, the A.I. would have no brains, without Angel, A.I. would have no Champion, but without Cordelia Chase, A.I. would have no mission, no heart, no purpose, Angel would have gone on in the world, forever, always cut off. Thanks to her he doesn't, and without her, Angel Investigations is lost.

Like I already wrote in the rep message, I totally agree with your post.
What I'd like to add: You can live without muscles, you can live with brain damage, but one thing that will definitely take you down is damage to the heart! And just look what a hit team Angel took whenever Cordy was absent!
 
Ah, most important. And here I thought it was the obvious "Who's your favourite character?". So a different kind of thinking. Important can be seen a bit different I guess. Would be weird to have this show without Angel. So as the central character he's pretty important. 😛 But I think Wesley (the member) made a good point.

But from my point of view W&H is pretty important. Not like there's any problem with having a new big bad each season as Buffy showed. But as things played out, the part they played even when it was just in the background and finally in the fifth season when they played a whole new part I just see them playing a big part. Not the most important part of the show but still an important part. So to me having them as a counterpart to team Angel is important as well.



I don't use the word "part" too much do I? 😉
 
You know, you could say Jasmine is the most important character in Angel. It was her scheme to take over the world that brought everyone together, didn't it, but I can't bring myself to believe that so, it has to be Angel. It was afterall, his mission that was the pumping heart of the show, his belief in fighting the good fight that united them all and made them all a family. No Angel, no Angel investigations, no fang gang.
 
I believe Cordelia is the best character on Angel. She definitely, along with Wesley, had the most developed character treatment, and helped the most next to Angel.
 
I would have to say that Cordelia was the most important. She really did try her hardest to cope with visions, and make the best out of everything.

Angel, obviously. He's the man! Runners up would be Doyle, Cordelia, and Wesley. They're the original Angel Investigations, after all.

Not to say the supporting characters weren't fantastic. I love Harmony, Fred, and of course, Spike. 🙂
 
Angel of course, then i'd say Doyle because he brought everyone together at first or at least brought Angel back to the game for real, then i'd go with Cordy who kept pushing Angel followed by Wesley who was the one who helped with all the language barriers if they had any....
 
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say....Angel? 😛 haha no, I think that all of the supporting characters are the most important. They bring new views, stories & plot lines, complications and humor. Angel is important yes, because the show is about him but these characters are the reason the show went the way it did and had such a big fanbase. Why do you think when you ask somebody who their favorite Angel character is, they never say Angel? (Mine is Fred personally 😉 )

Even though Angel is the star of the show, I'd have to say I think Cordelia is the most important character. She was the heart of the team, the one who kept everyone motivated and who always reminded them what side they faught for... Without her, the show was never the same.
