10 Days of Angel Day 9: Season 5

A very uneven season and a death of another great character. 🙁

Angel as a puppet was gold. One of THE best episodes in Angel ever. My favourite part was when he was getting eaten by Nina. " Bad Nina! Bad Nina! No!!" and Lorne finding Angel lying on the floor with his stuffing hanging out. LOL.

You're Welcome brings back Cordy and closure for her character. And it also brings back a couple of past characters and Spike!

But the only thing that irritated me was putting Spike in front of the original characters in the credits. WTF?

Same as with s4, I feel a bit torn about this season. Cordy is gone (save for one episode), the hotel is gone, and just everything is different really.
While I did like the darkness the show came with, towards the end of it I'm not sure if the writers maybe overdid it a bit. Lilah and Cordy were already pretty much gone since mid season 4, but this season also saw Fred, Wesley and Lindsey getting killed and Gunn pratically already standing with one foot in the grave. Maybe a bit too much.

One the other hand, some stuff about the season was awesome, take Spike and Harmony as an example 😀 Then there was the whole W&H thing, which was really a new idea and sort of refreshing to see, although I'm not completely convinced the writers really thought it through. (Didn't Lilah mention in s4 that everyone from W&H was killed? Not just the people who were working that day, but also people on sick leave and on vacation and stuff? Well, in s5 I got the impression that an awful lot of people were named that apparently had already worked for W&H before)

Agreed :)
I love how it's different from other seasons. Let say it's UNIQUE.

I never thought Angel would work for W&H one day. Every episodes is interesting. Bringing Spike and Harmony back was priceless thing to do even I love the fact that Spike died as a hero and he shouldn't have come back. 😀 It's good that dark atmosphere in S4 finally ended. I like how S5 is so funny. It's good to see Gunn with hair. And I really had a crush on Sarah Thompson(Eve). And I also like Nangel relationship. And I love Illyria. I don't mind that Cordy, Fred and Wes died. It made good tv. It's just awfully sad. 🙁 And Lindsey shouldn't have been back after that good exit in season 2.

The only episode that I don't enjoy watching was Conviction. My favorite is definitely You're Welcome. I also love Harm's Way(Lmao),Damage, Smile Time, A Hole In The World, Shells, The Girl In Question and of course Not Fade Away.

This is actually my favorite season of all of Buffydom. By adding Spike the show became essentially a parade of Buffyverse Baddassery. With Spike, Angel and Wesley wandering around taking names it was like a fanservice explosion in my face.

I truly enjoyed the addition of Harmony and Spike when he's not desperately and whimperingly in love in Buffy is a true joy. I think the Spike/Angel friendship/hateship/brotherhood/sexual tension? is the best relationship in all the Buffyverse and to get an entire season about it... wheeeee! Not to mention Connor comes back with a personality that I can stand. Cordelia gets to come back and be herself again. Wesley is firmly entrenched as supreme buttkicker, Gunn becomes corrupt lawyer dude, even Fred is rockin the science to your face. Essentially the entire team took a level in Badarse and it was awesome.

The number of episodes in the season I consider superior, Hellbound, Lineage, Destiny, Harm's Way, Damage, You're Welcome, Smile Time, Hole in the World, Shells, Underneath, Origin, Time Bomb, Power Play, and Not Fade Away. I could have picked a top 10 list out of just this season.

Also I wouldn't be to upset about ALL the deaths, Joss has stated that had he been allowed a season 6 (which he expected because the rating for Angel had gone UP) he would not have killed Wesley, Fred would have started some time of time share with Illyrias body, and Gunn would have come back as a vampire Big Bad. Lindsay just needed to go he's a bad boy!

Anyhow, it's my favourite.

My favorite season! My favorite episodes are in season 5. Some of my favorites were smile time, a hole in the world and not fade away. I also really liked Illyria.

my favourite season in the buffyverse as well.

Agree with all of Wesley's points, its got everything you could want. And while people dont like it because its different to other seasons of angel i loved it because of that. It was a refreshing change and i'm glad that the buffyverse went out on such a high note.

I cannot watch this season without getting all teary-eyed. It really gets to me. Plus, the whole Fred business.
Heartbreaking.
I did enjoy the Nina/Angel relationship.
It was good to see Angel getting some.
I did love the return of Spike.
I did not care for the Numero Cinco episode.

I loved Season 5, as all the other seasons. Having Spike on board tickled my fancy more than a good tickling should! I love the banter between him & Angel.

I loved that Fred & Wesley FINALLY got together, but hated to see them die, but I loved the way they gave Wesley that one true moment of happiness by dying in Fred's arms (Illyria as Fred). But I truly LOVED the entire Illyria character and my favorite line from the entire season was "I wish to keep Spike as my pet" 😀 😀 😀

I loved the eppy when Cordelia came back to wrap up her character - it was a nice way to end it for her.

I didn't care much for Angel & Nina's relationship because it just felt forced; there was absolutely no substance to it. But I enjoyed seeing WereNina eat PuppetAngel - such great comic value!

It was good to see Lindsey again (love Christian Kane!!!) and nice that he DID fight with the good guys at the end, and I even liked that it was Lorne who killed him. Fitting way for Lorne to exit without dying ...and good to see Lindsey get his as well.

I didn't like the ending because it left me wanting more! I wanted to see Angel SLAYING the dragon! But oh well, all good things must come to an end. It was a GREAT show. I miss it very much.

For a long time this was my favourite season of Angel. Now I'm not so sure. I love the idea of them taking charge of W&H and what it does to them. It has a lot of great episodes, I like Illyria, the return of Connor (he deserves it) and two deaths of main characters and a very fitting although annoying ending. Having Spike on the show was a good move now that Cordelia is gone (and them meeting is great 😀). But it's still a bit uneven and the ending feels too rushed. Not like they had much choice since they got cancelled.

Season Five was the first season of Angel that I actually watched all the way through (and on "live" TV, rather than reruns), and it's remained my favourite season ever since 😀

First we have the addition of Spike and Harmony to the cast; two great decisions for the show I think. The dynamic between Spike and Angel is always a source of entertainment; having them work beside each other every day gave some light-heartedness to even the most depressing episodes. And although Harmony isn't my favourite of characters, I liked seeing how she and Lorne got along. She had some pretty funny scenes in this season (like beating up Eve in "You're Welcome"), and I was happy to see "Harm's Way" focus on a minor character for a change.

This season just had a lot of strong shows for me. Smile Time, Hole in the World, You're Welcome, Power Play, Why We Fight, Harm's Way, Life of the Party, Origin.... I don't think there's another season of Angel that I can list off that many episodes that I really loved. It's a shame that they couldn't go for another season; I think that season 6 could have been amazingly strong if they had been given the opportunity (I always imagine that the Illyria storyline would have been drawn out a little more, as would Angel's "betrayal" of Wolfram and Hart).

I donno, I just found the writing this season to be particularly strong. And in contrast to Seasons 3 and 4, it was nice to see the team taking on some more light-hearted storylines again. On top of that, we saw the quick return of Cordelia (free of evil demons this time, yay!) and a relatively sane Connor that I could grow to love.

(and they made Angel a puppet. Did I mention they made him a puppet?? 😀)

IMO, season 5 wasn't as good as seasons 1 and 2, but it was better than Buffy season 6 (not tryign to step on any toes here, it's jus ttha tseason 6 was my least favorite Buffy season.)
Like a lot of others have already said, adding Spike was great, especially since I'm a spike fan, and "Shining Time" was a stand out episode, killing off Fred and Wes in the same season was almost too emotional for me.

I love Season five of Angel. It was actually the first one I saw in its entirety. I saw bits of the previous seasons here and there but then After I bought my first boxset of Buffy I remebered that Spike had gone over to Angel so I went and bought season five. Watched it, loved it but had no idea who all the people were of, indeed, why Angel was working for W&H so I went and got the rest of Angel. Watched it. Loved it. Season five made much more sense.

What do I love about season five? - All the Spike/Angel stuff is great. I like how it seems like stand-alone episodes much of the time but really the season-long arc was very strong. Love Destiny, Damage, You're welcome, Not Fade Away. Hell, I even enjoy Numero Cinco and Why we fight.
