Yeah, and Alice in Wonderland was in the same vein...the "dream as reality/reality is a dream" plot is a staple of SF/Fantasy literature genre, among others.
 
Well you know having two shows do a musical, and having two shows do a musical about a demon that uses it to kill people, are two different things 😉
 
God I'm not going to have to link to a Xena the Warrior Princess episode, then watch it to see if there's an actual connection am I? I still want the 45 minutes of my life back I spent watching Brain Drain.

The story is like this isn't it?

"The Bitter Suite" is an episode of the TV series Xena: Warrior Princess, Xena (Lucy Lawless) and Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) are tricked into fighting each other after a falling out, which leads them to being trapped in the world of Illusyia, where images of Ares (Kevin Smith) and Callisto still hope to pit them against each other in a battle to the death. Xena and Gabrielle are partly guided through Illusyia by an image of their sidekick Joxer.

Actually that one sounds more like this one from the musical episode of Sci Fi/Fantasy Lex, which I believe predates both the Xena and Buffy musical episodes.

As the crew of the Lexx desperately flee Mantrid's army of robot drones, they encounter a strange, floating theater in space. Once they are inside, an elaborate musical production begins that recounts the history of Kai and his people, the Brunnen-G, and their battle against the Insect Civilization. Kai and Xev both find themselves taking part in the musical: Kai as himself when he was alive, Xev as Kai's unnamed lover. At the episode's end the musical's message of proudly fighting even in the face of sure defeat convinces Stanley Tweedle to join his friends in battle against Mantrid.

Actually I'm not sure the Lex episode Brigadoom predates the Xena episode Bitter Suite. I can only find the American air date for Brigadoom.

However at Wikipedia they say this.

A full, musical episode of an ongoing TV series was a very unusual thing when this episode aired, although the stunt was later imitated by such series as Xena and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I lost the link now, but I was just reading somewhere someone was saying they were going to do the Buffy musical ep in Season 4, but it was felt it would follow too closely on the heals of the Xena ep. I think I also just read the Xena ep was nominated for Emmies.

Well that'd be fair enough, cause they are good singers and the episode's quite intense.
As well as that... I remember thinking while watching Xena, that certain stuff could be found in Buffy... like Callisto / Faith (the whole nemesis thing, and redemption - not that it was ONLY in Xena before, but you can find some really close similarities) and other stuff I can't recall now.. but some episodes made me think "oh, Buffy has that too"... so I wonder if the writers found (even a tiny lil bit) of inspiration in Xena... which would be cool... :silly:
 
I'm sure there's inspiration everywhere. I just object to terms like "ripped off", because I don't think they apply.

I remember one that used to make me shake my head where this member used to say stuff like Joss Whedon was a plagiarizer, because Illyria reminded her of Seven of Nine from Star Trek Voyageur.
 
Well, if you want to get into it - when Willow does the spell to bring Buffy back and the bugs crawl under her skin it's exactly like in the Mummy.

I'm not using ripped off because they used similar themes, like when people say that a show about a vampire detective is ripping off Angel, but two episodes at the same time (3 if you count the recent Smallville ep) on the same network that are pretty much the same episode, that's quite a coincidence.
 
Bugs and other stuff crawling under people's skin was an old idea by the time it hit The Mummy or Buffy. I think Alien was 1979.

Actually if you really want to get into it, we should talk about the difference between derivative in a pejorative sense, and postmodern in the sense that when nothing matters, everything matters, and the extraneous influences of art become tools beyond simple homage.

Or we could just move on to Anne Rice. 🙂
 
Well my teacher in film school used to say in scriptwriting that there were no original story ideas anymore. Which I think might be true, but then again I think he was also challenging us.

Yeah, and if we want to go from the sublime to the ridiculous, the ep where Dawn tries to bring back her mom is a direct derivation of The Monkey's Paw...short story geek here...😉...or maybe just short...😉
