If my information is correct - 10 years ago today I joined up to Buffy Boards 😀
I remember when I found the site, but I did not realise it was so long ago! I had just purchased my first laptop and internet dongle. I was living in a tiny tin shed while working on a horse property, the internet was capped at 1 gig per month and would only work in certain positions in the shed. I remember signing up to this forum with the dongle balanced on a bunch of books and a salt shaker. I didn't yet have a table so I was set up in the middle of the floor, excited to have found other fans! A window into the fun life of fandom.
Since then I have made some amazing friends thanks to this forum, my views have been challenged, my love of the show deepened and I grew as a person in ways I could never have imagined. Some of my fondest (and funniest) internet memories took place in the Buffy IRC chat, in the house of Vahla ha'nesh and on the open board. I have met members in person, travelled for fan conventions and supported other members, as they have supported me, through tough times. I most enjoy learning about the differences in culture and living arrangements, and finding similarities in our lives despite the distance. My world view has been shaped by people from all over the world, vs those stuck in the information bubble of the isolated state capital here. I am so thankful to the people who have become long term friends from this site. It is wonderful to have such caring, interesting and fun net friends to turn to when the "real world" is not so fun. Its been brilliant to be kept up to date with the Whedonverse and the top tv shows before netflix landed, most of which I would have missed without access to this site.
