BBC News just announced that the Eleventh Doctor will be announced tomorrow, January 3:

Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.

His replacement - the eleventh Doctor of the TV series - will be revealed in a Doctor Who Confidential programme on BBC One at 1735 on 3 January.

The casting decision has been a priority for the show's new creative team, led by executive producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger.

The BBC said that in Saturday's Doctor Who special "the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction" to becoming TV's most famous time traveller.

Murphy's Law and Cold Feet star James Nesbitt emerged as one of the favourites, along with Paterson Joseph, John Simm and David Morrissey - who appeared in the 2008 Christmas special.

Paterson Joseph, who recently starred in Survivors and appeared in two Doctor Who episodes in 2005, has said "any actor would love the challenge" of playing the Time Lord.

Bookmakers made him an early favourite - offering odds of 3-1 on him becoming the first black Doctor.

Comedian Jennifer Saunders, former Doctor Who assistant Billie Piper and film star Catherine Zeta Jones have also been mentioned in connection with the role.

I agree with my husband... I'd pay to see Catherine Zeta Jones play the Doctor. 😉 (Not saying it's my first pick, just saying it'd be awesome in true How I Met Your Mother fashion)
 
I'm half excited and half worried that it will be someone I don't like...Jim Davison as The Doctor, anyone 😉 They're being very coy as to whether it's an actor or actress, aren't they? Is it too late to start the "Stephen Fry for Doctor" campaign?
 
Well, whomever is excited enough to actually find out, will you let us poor Americans who don't have BBC One know who the new Doctor will be? 😉
 
...or one of us UKers will post here at about that time if real life doesn't intervene in some way 😉
 
I don't wanna know! Oh, wait yes I do. No I don't. I don't know. I don't think so, but I think I'm just too curious... I really want to know. But not now. Not yet. Or maybe.. Why do they announce it now already, btw, and not, say, shortly before Tennant's actual last one? For viewing figures and hype and marketing and everything that would be way smarter don't you think?

My take on why they are doing it now.

Around about July/August they will start production on the next series, by which time The Doctor would have been confirmed and 'The Sun' would have found out somehow who was The Next Doctor.

This way, The BBC, Russell, Steven and the actor are the ones in control of the announcement.

Anyway, my TWO favourites woud be Colin Salmon and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

I don't, at the moment, want the favourite - Paterson Joseph - but I will watch it anyway and I'll probably enjoy...besides, I have a year and a quarter to get used to the idea.

Whoa! He is *really* young! Is the 12th doc gonna be a kid, now? :P
From the clips i've just seen of the guy and well he looks like he could be interesting. He looks like he could be in McFly! The worry i'm now having is that they try to make it too teeny. Doctor Who has such a wide fan base for a reason and this may put off the older crown. I say may beause obviously we don't know how its going to be until we see it.

Now it is just me...or at this rate, is the 13th Doctor going to be played by a pre-teen?

I mean, the Doc's been played by younger and younger actors for the last...what, 3 or 4 Time Lords? (Tennant was in his mid 30s when he started, Eccleston in his early 40s, Paul McGann was around the same age when he did the DW TV movie.)

I don't think we should worry about that too much, don't forget, moffat is producing now, and his episodes have always been among the least teeny ones.
But wow. Really weird hair ^^

Must admit to jealousy of some friends who happen to be in London now and watched it live. 😉 They also got to see David Tennant this evening... yes, I think I rather am jealous. 😉

Not so sure what I think of this guy. His hair is annoying and he just strikes me as "immature teen" in the interview clips on YouTube. 'course, that's an American's viewpoint... 😉 Who knows, he might well be good! 😀

His imdb page doesn't look convincing. He's got very little onscreen experience, but in Britain normally stage experience counts more and imdb doesn't cover that, so I'm very curious. He looks rather weird though and from point of view too young and at least from that picture there just too bloody teeny.


Though at the same time there is something of Frankenstein about him.

Wel, DT also hadn't that much on screen experience before he started. I think they like to pick little known actors
I was very surprised at this choice; I'd expected someone's David's age or older - not a 26-year-old! That said, everyone on production team seemed very excited to have him, so even i his CV isn't that impressive, I'm keeping an open mind. I'm far from horrified. But *sigh* it's gonna be a LOOONG time before we get to see him in action (ah well - more time with David!)

It's not available for non-UKers to watch, but they've posted it on youtube as well (I'm assuming it's the same).

Actually, after watching the interview, I feel a lot better. He's quite sympathetic, and of course I don't know how his acting is, but I trust the producers so that should be allright. He seems really excited and nice, which happen to be two things the doctor also should be. So, I can sleep now ^^
