I posted these on my blog(the second one is quite old) but figured I would show you guys;

Why is Riley working for Twilight?

Here's how it could have happened:
Sam (Riley's wife) and a slayer got into a argument. The slayer kills Sam, accidentally. Riley kills the slayer out of anger, but later regrets it. But all Twilight has seen is Riley killing a (somewhat) innocent slayer. He approaches Riley to make him an deal;
.
To help kill the girl responsible for giving the slayers power, Buffy. He might even have given him a speech of how all magic is bad and needs to be banished (this is assuming he doesn't want to keep Riley in the dark, like he could bge doing with Amy and Warren).
.
Riley knows he got no choice. If he refuses Twilight might kill him, and even tough he doesn't care much about his own life anymore, he still cares about Buffy, and doesn't blame her. Or maybe he does. Maybe he could bring up Gigi and Simone as examples of Buffy's judgement when talking to her, which will add to the 'Buffy wonders if she made the right decision in Chosen-theme of the season. But Riley still wants Buffy alive because he realizes that they still fight on the same side and he's not, you know, a murderer.
.
So Riley's kind of a double agent. And he let himself get branded with Twilight's mark to show loyalty.
.
But what he doesn't know, is that the mark ties him to Twilight and because of it, Twilight can read all the treacherous thoughts going on in Riley's mind...
.
Unless you haven't guessed it, I confess, I have a soft spot for Riley. Even tough he practically cheated on Buffy, I still feel for the guy. And I don't believe he just woke up one day and decided he wanted Buffy killed. So this is one theory. I could be way off, of course.

Riley: Betrayer or puppet?

In issue 9 we hear Lieutenant Molter mention to Twilight (she's working for him) that;

"Our man on the inside confirms that Summers is still alive."

Twilight has a mole, spying on Buffy.

In issue 17, Buffy goes to see a secret someone. In issue 19, it's confirmed that it's Riley(unless we have a lookalike here😉

It makes sense that Riley's the mole.

Somehow, the Tokyo vamps knew about the Schyte, it's power and where it was located. They also knew about Dawn, and built a Mecha-Dawn to insult and defeat her.

I think they had been tipped of by Twilight. Or manipulated is more like it.

The slayers' castle was protected by our own super-witch's spells and assumingly technical skills. Yet Amy & Warren knew how to blow it up.

All these things are stuff that could come up an a "date" with your ex, a little small talk between former lovers. Specially since, according to the outfit, Buffy still fancies Riley.'

So, Riley's the mole. The betrayer spoken of in issue 10 perhaps?

Buffy: What happens to me here? (Refering to her crying beaten shape in a vision]
Robin: Betrayl. The closest, the most expected.

I doubt he's the betrayer, because of how he got biten by that vamp in Season 5. I doubt Buffy would consider betrayl by him the most unexpected.

But back on topic.

I do not think Riley is acting on his own will.

With my fellow Buffy-fans I've discussed who Twilight is. Marcie the Invisible gil from Season 1 and Hank, Buffy's father, were the most unlikely yet possible guesses, because as Anya did in the episode The Gift, we have to think outside the box, because you know, it's Joss' comic.

So we talked about how Riley never liked the supernatural and we came up with an idea; Maybe Sam, his wife, was killed and now he's crazy with grief and filled with hatred towards magic.

But that alone didn't explain how he was ready to murder, as Twilight or the mole.

Now it's been proven that he's not Twilight (unless they're the same person or Twilight is Future/Past/Alternative universe Riley) but he's the mole and sure, he can have strong enough motives for attacking his former love. Maybe something even bigger than his wife death happened.

But remember this line in issue 16 that immediatly made me say EUREKA!

Warren [to Twilight]: Hey, I have no skin. Which means I don't have your cute little sunset symbol carved in it. I'm in this for myself, and myself is telling you right now that this baby is gonna bring the noise.

Mind-control anyone? Warren is implying that he is working for himself, because he doesn't have the Twilight-mark on him.

In issue one, we see these men who have assumingly trapped themselves in a church with a bunch of demons. Buffy, Leah, Rowena and Satsu attacks and kills the demons and search the men's bodies. On at least one of them, the Twilight symbol is carved. Satsu, Leah, Rowena and Buffy are discussing if the marks could be self-inflicted, and if they trapped themselves with the demons inside on purpose.

Outside the church we see a couple of feet in the air, watching.

In issue 3, Giles and a demon of the same specie as the ones from the church-attack are having an argument about who lured the demons out there and

Giles: "...sacrificed two young men in the process."

They think the demons were played and the men mind-controlled and I suspect the fight was set up so Twilight could study his opponent, much like in Spike in Season 2(Halloween) when Spike maked one of his minions film a fight between a vamp and Buffy.

To sum up, I wonder, did those men and General Voll, also marked with Twilight's symbol (what the hell happened to him anyway?) act on their own accord? Was the mark just a symbol of loyality or were someone pulling their strings?

Is Riley a betrayer or a puppet?

And more importantly; Did I crack Joss Whedon's plan? Did I put the puzzle together?

Because if I did, mohahaha (wheter I was first to figure it out or not).

So, what do you guys think?

awesome theories! and...*BIRTHDAY KARMA!!*
I had a therory that Generall Voll is Twilight. He is totaly set on stoping buffy. And hello massive evil!! He showed that he can persuade people plus Riley is army so it would have been easy for him to get Riley on his side.

Can we assume that Riley is what that snake-sorceress-lady whose names I'll never be able to remember quite correctly was talking about when she said "the betrayal, the closest, the most unexpected" (or something among these words) ? I think we can't : it really seems Riley was on Buffy's side from the beginning : even Twilight seemed to know it. So who is it ?

I just read issue 30 and see that my theories are in some wats useless, since Twilight was suprised by the betrayl.

Wasn't it Robin in issue 10 that said that about the betrayal?

And I think Twilight seemed surprised by Riley's betrayal, since he said no one could be trusted (or something to that effect) and walked away defeated.

I bet it's Buffy that betrays herself. She's begun to not trust herself and that will be her downfall. Or maybe she discovers that her consience has failed her, that she has become cold and distant, and that will break her. That's what Twilight seems to be after, to make Buffy defeat herself.

Definitely not.

Can we assume that Riley is what that snake-sorceress-lady (...) was talking about when she said "the betrayal, the closest, the most unexpected" (or something among these words) ?
Nope, I think she may have been talking about the Buffy/Dark Willow fight to the death from TOYL. Even if she wasn't, Riley never betrayed Buffy, he was working for her all along.

It's really up in the air since pretty much everyone except for Spike (and apparently Riley) are willing to betray Buffy for one reason or another.

Skytteflickan88 agrees: How do you figure Spike is less likely than everyone else?

I was kinda vague. What I meant was that in the past we've seen pretty much everyone except for Ensouled-Spike willing to betray or at least defy Buffy.

Xander: The Scooby revolt at the end of S7, and that smaller Scooby revolt in Buffy's S3 return.

Willow: She's fought Buffy twice and was part of the two Scooby revolts.

Dawn: Kicked Buffy out of her own house.

Angel: The Faith incident.

Giles: Would have killed Dawn and Spike. Recruited Faith to murder Genevieve, has made it clear that his loyalty is with the Good fight over Buffy.

Anya: Early S7.

Wes: Was never especially loyal to anyone above the good fight.

Faith: obvious

Ensouled Spike: Unwavering Loyalty

And I'm a Bangel saying this 🙂

To be fair though, Spike's champion status was dubious back then, he might swing differently now...

Getting back to the title of the thread, I'm also curious what happened to Sam. Hopefully Riley mentions it before the end of this season, but that's a long shot, considering everything else that's going on.

Riley will be getting a one shot, so hpoefully she will be mentioned or seen.
Personally - I think Robin's Warning in Issue 10 - is not a warning about Riley, or Twilight(AKA Angel). But is likely more a warning about Willow (since she was also there) or possible Giles.

I think that Riley is currently acting as an agent for Twilight for the same reason that Buffy is acting the way she has started acting the way that she currently. Whoever is actually behind the scenes running the show has them, as well as Angel, and probably several other cast members, under some kind of thrall and is manipulating the current events in order to advance his/her/its own agenda. That is the only possible explanation for so many people acting so contrary to their established personalities.

(Also, though it doesn't really pertain to the actual question, I believe that that being will finally be revealed to be one of the someone who we have believed from the beginning of the series to be one of the good guys, simply because it would be such a shock, and that's how diabolical Joss' mind works)

As long as it's not as horrible as the "Jasmine is behind everything" talk in Angel season 4, that kind of twist could work. Maybe....
