Let's say someone was just born right now and you want to introduce him/her to what '80s music was really like. Which 20 songs would you choose?

For me, the decade was much more than bubblegum pop, Thriller, bad hair and Madonna. There's a lot of great music during that decade that people have missed because either radio stations didn't play it enough or was not as respected as they should. Lots of cool songs from that era. Here are my 20, in no particular order:

I'm not sure I can actually remember 20 songs from the 80's. I lived thru them (barely) and the brain damage was extensive, but I can add to your list!

I might replace "In God's Country" with "Pride (in the name of love)" for U2, or just add it...what the hell!

"Vienna" by Ultravox sums up the best of early 80's music for me.

A couple of early 80's albums that were pretty much required listening when I was at college were "Dare" by The Human League and "Lexicon of Love" by ABC - both are intelligent pop masterpieces IMO.
 
"Tainted Love" by Soft Cell?? ::light:: Calssic 80's tunage I'd say.....
 
Aren't the 80's the decade that everybody is trying to forget about, because the music and the style were sooo bad? And now everybody is embarrased about that it happened?

If you get past the hair metal bands and the bubblegum pop you'd realize that there was a considerable number of artists who have considerable respect among their peers and their music considered groundbreaking by any standards. I'm talking about:

The Smiths
10,000 Maniacs
Kate Bush
Killing Joke
Talking Heads
Tears For Fears
Simple Minds
Depeche Mode
The Pretenders
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

They made their mark during the '80s.
