Jayne Nelson gives the Buffy spin-off a big hug

Angel was so much more than a spin-off from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It became a phenomenal series in its own right: chock-full of laughs, drama and plot twists so relentlessly twisty it ended up as a completely different show than the one it started out as (something even Buffy didn't really accomplish).

Angel took a mysterious and moody vampire from Sunnydale and deposited him in Los Angeles to battle his heartbreak, his past and his future, with a group of unusual friends to help him through the dark and into the light "“ figuratively, anyway. But why was this vampire's journey so fascinating to watch? Jayne Nelson explores the City of Angel"¦

Do you agree? Is there anything else you would add?

I agree, take Spike out and it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to this show.
While I believe Buffy is still the better show, Angel is pretty awesome. So I agree except for the "completely different" thing, because anybody who watched Buffy knows that the changes between season 1 and season 7 are immense, and it also became a competely different show as well.

I think they summed it up *nod*

I was waiting impatiently for Lindsey's name to appear. Glad they didn't forget him!!

I really liked this list. This was a good list.

I wouldn't have had Spike in it because I honestly don't feel it was a meaningful part of Ats. He was wedged in at the behest of Fox and I think it shows. I feel Doyle had more of a place in that list than Spike ever could. Even if they had just included "Hero", it would have been more fitting because that epsiode means so much to that show. In all kinds of ways.

I was very happy that they gave Boreanaz his dues, too. I don't particularly like the guy, but he acted his arse off as Angel. I mean, compare how subdued and quiet his performance of Angel is, how it had to be, to how big and scene stealing Angelus is? That took real chops and if he wasn't as good an actor as he is, then Angel simply wouldn't have worked.

I'm just happy people are showing Angel love at all.

I agree with both points. While I liked Spike in season 5, I don't think he was intregral to the show & it would have been fine without him.

Absolutely agreed with both points.

I wouldn't of had Spike in there either, Doyle was much more deserving

That was a good sum up, especially 13 😉 Numfar's dance of joy well deserved a place on that list 😀

I agree with everything, except Darla and the love triangle. I didn't like either. Almost all the episodes involving Darla were boring, and the character itself was never a favorite of mine. She only shined in 'Lullaby', imo. As for the Fred/Wes/Gunn triangle... ugh! I hated what it did to Gunn and Wes' friendship, and seriously they wanted us to believe that Fred didn't notice Wesley was into her? Lol! 🙄

As for the stuff I strongly agreed with... Cordy, Wesley, the three L's (mostly Lorne 😀 ), Smile Time and Wolfram & Hart. 🙂 Such a great show!

Blasphemy! 😉

Personally I'm all for Darla on that list. It was brilliant to bring her back (regardless of Connor plotline) just to get a more detailed view into Angelus' 'mother' so to speak, to see his past and how she helped shape him. Plus I think that we needed to see Angel try to 'free' himself of her influence, because he may never have 'loved' her, but he sure as heck never really got over her either.

I kind of agree about the love triangle though, in a way I like it, but at the same time... I greatly resented seeing Gunn's and Wes' friendship ruined over it. They were an odd match but I loved seeing them together as good friends and working as a team.

Blasphemy indeed!
I would like to add one more....#21 Angel Does Stuff!

Yeah, that was the weakest entry for me too.

randiann- ROFL at AngelDoesStuff!! But he/she is not posting a lot lately. 🙁

Tome- dude, you have a heart of stone. You wouldn't cry at my Bangel gifs & you don't like Darla! Ah well I love you & your funny accent anyway. 😉

There was a new one just a few days ago!
Simply listing 20 physical characteristics of Angel would have created an acceptable list. But this one was much better. I also agree with adding Angel does stuff. Makes me giggle.

Words!

I'm very happy people show appreciation and love for Angel. Very, very happy.

And David Boreanaz was simply great as Angel.

I neither would have put Spike in the list. Simply, he doesn't belong to the show. Replacing Cordelia with Spike was an unforgivable mistake. And yes, Doyle was much more deserving.

Yeah, there is something that I consider very important, in fact possibly the most important thing to me about Angel: He's always trying. Okay, sometimes he's EXTREMELY trying, as well as exasperating, but that's not really what I'm getting at.

Every time that Angel screws up, and I doubt that there is anyone here who could deny that he has pulled some real dandies over the years, his motives were always unquestionable. Whatever he has done, it was done with the sincere belief that what he was doing was for the greater good. He took away Buffy's day of happiness in "I Will Remember You" because he honestly believed that in doing so, he was in some way protecting her. He didn't steal everyone's memory of Connor because his son was an embarrassment to him, or because he was somehow jealous of his son's relationship with Cordy. He thought that, by erasing Connor's true origins and life up to that point, and giving him new, normal parents, and a new, normal life, he was doing what was best for Connor in particular, but in general, for everyone concerned with the train wreck that was his life for the first 15 years.

It all blew up in his face, as usual. Buffy died protecting a loved one anyway, Connor got sucked back into Angel's world anyway. And his dealings with Twilight, we just won't go into here, because we're still seeing repercussions from that little dog and pony show, not the least of which is the quite real possibility that he has destroyed all chances of any kind of a happy life with Buffy (Calm down, Bangels, I only said POSSIBILITY) There's no wonder at all that the bum likes to crawl off into a dark corner and brood whenever he gets the chance.

But he always comes back out of the darkness, dries his eyes, wipes his nose, and gets right back into the fight. He never gives up TRYING to do the right thing. The lesson that Connor learned from him remains true. You do whatever you can to protect the people you love. Sometimes it isn't possible. Sometimes fate, destiny, or just plain bad luck makes the whole thing fall apart, and sometimes the trying actually causes a whole new set of problems. But, from dedication or stupidity, take your choice, it never gets so bad that Angel just gives up and quits trying.

And that's what I like most about Angel.

Now if he would just stay away from Spike's girl...

Spike has a girl? Do you mean the one Angel had first? :p

Oh I'm sure I would have been :p
white avenger, you have me in tears! It is very true, & 1 of the reasons I love both the show & the character.

You're referring, of course, to the "staying away from Spike's girl" part, right?

SlayerOfVampyrs agrees: ...Da f is that? LMAO
Lol isn't it awesome?!
white avenger- I dont think my eyeballs can roll back any further in my head.

The crossovers were my favorite, I just wish there was more of them. Smile Time on the other hand I could do without. That episode was just a little too silly for me.
