Tom Cruise was very funny in Tropic Thunder, but it doesn't seem right to compare him to the other supporting actors. They put in months of hard work. Tom put on a fat suit, swore a lot, and danced around Matthew McConaughey for 5 minutes.
Judy Dench, pursed her lips put on a wig and big dress and simply stared at Gwyneth Paltrow for 9 minutes and won an Oscar - whats the difference?
What Tom Cruise did (and I cannot believe I am defending this man) was totally emerse himself into a character that took audience by surprise. I know alot of people didn't realise who it was for quite a while - which had little to do with a 'fat suit' and more to do with the fact he was unrecognisable thanks to acting. People forget that Tom Cruise is actually a pretty decent actor when he is at his best because of his lunatic lifestyle choice.
He was support in the film and as this was for Best Supporting Actor, he fits.
Lest we also forget, the only reason Tom Cruise is in this discussion is because you brought him in, you compared him initially.
I do agree with most of what you're saying, minus the blatant jab at Obama.

That was a generalised attack at more than Obama. The Media Savvy Politician has been around for quite a while.
The biggest recent one in UK history was Tony Blair, and his counter part, David Cameron (I am a Conservative by the way) is also up there in the media profile, lacking the experience, and he is potentially the next Prime Minister.
But still, even though Hollywood cares much more about making money than creating works of art, it doesn't change the fact that Heath Ledger's performance was made iconic not because he died before the world was able to see it, but because of his acting. And I do think that, had he lived, he would have at least gotten a nomination.
You cannot sit there and argue that, just like I cannot argue against it because we have no way to test that opinion.
I personally believe that his performance, though engaging, was not the best of the year and does in no way make his role iconic.
It is rare that films like The Dark Knight (comic book superhero) get nominations in the big ones, (Iron Man was, in my opinion the best film of the year and RDjr's performance was the best of the year and not a single nomination - something many critics were saying on the end of year discussion on BBC2 Newsnight Movie Special) yet this one did - because interestingly the public have demanded it.
