Day 11: Favorite Buffy/Angel sex scene?
Story time! The sex scene in "Amends" might be both the reason I didn't really start watching the show until my mid teens even though my introduction to it came years earlier AND the reason I kept watching when I finally found it again. My family did not have cable when I was a kid, but when that episode first aired, we were on holiday at a condo that did. I was eight. I was watching TV with my dad, and somehow we ended up watching that (no idea what Mom and my little brothers were doing at the time). The only memories I have of watching that episode then are:
1) being way more convinced than I ever have been since by Angelus's vampire makeup in the flashbacks and entranced by both versions of the character (in a very wide-eyed eight-year-old way),
2) my dad saying something like "If Buffy is a Vampire Slayer, then what happens if she gets turned into a vampire?" (he has no memory of saying this but I'm 100% sure he did), and
3) that Dad abruptly turned it off before it was over. It wasn't until years later that I was able to figure out which episode that was, but Dad definitely turned it off because he didn't want his eight-year-old seeing that sex scene.
So that one's kind of my favorite Buffy/Angel sex scene just because of my wacky personal history with it.
If you want the rest of the story, here it is. While I did consume every horror short story my school library had to offer in my tweens, I didn't start watching Buffy again until I was fifteen and had a summer job babysitting for a family that had cable, and Buffy reruns just happened to play at the same time as the kids took their naps. I watched many episodes wildly out of order all summer. We got TiVo around then and I discovered Angel. I thought it was a really weird coincidence that this show also had a vampire named Angel who was played by the same actor. 🙄 Yeah, it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize this was in fact the same Angel from BtVS and that it was a spinoff series, because I had never heard of such a thing. I do have documented email evidence that Angel was my first fictional crush, so at least there's that.
Anyway, I was hooked. I couldn't get the episodes fast enough because streaming wasn't a thing yet, so I went online and read the transcripts of the episodes I couldn't watch (which resulted in a very bizarre issue when I later did watch those episodes, because my imagination has a much higher special effects budget than a late '90s/early '00s show, as well as different directorial preferences).
As obsessed as I had become, I was mortified by the thought of anyone finding out I liked this show. Then there was a Smallville Halloween episode that was one Buffy reference after another, with a particularly good one by James Marsters' character, and I couldn't take it anymore. So I told my best friend, expecting her to think I was dumb for liking a show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but she shocked me by saying she loved the show too. That moment was like the greatest epiphany of my life. It was okay to like this nerdy show. It still took me a long time before I was able to say the title without cringing a little (there's no getting around that it's fairly silly-sounding), but I no longer felt like it had to be this big dark secret.
Basically, the Buffyverse is what helped me realize that it's okay to be nerdy and that I don't have to apologize for liking what I like, and it will always have a special place in my heart for that, no matter what other shows come along. But maybe if Dad hadn't turned off "Amends" halfway through for reasons I didn't realize at the time, I wouldn't have been intrigued enough when I found the show again at fifteen to give it a shot.
